the story thus far —

For as long as he can remember, Nash has had a passion for the fantastical and grandiose, from superheroes to epic fantasies and sci-fi adventures, Nash is into everything that the rest of the world is somewhat lukewarm on (for now). 

Despite his penchant for daydreaming and creating fantasy worlds of his own to live in, his parents have refused to allow Nash to lavish in such dreams, always having plans for him to eventually join the corporate world of finance. It isn’t that they are even harsh and strict, but rather practical and realistic as far as what will secure his future. 

It was, indeed, to their horror to then find out there was a magical world and that Nash seemed to inherit the necessary genetics that made him magical, too. They tried to discourage it, as they did not take well to what they did not know or understand. 

Eventually relenting, they allowed Nash to go to primary, thinking maybe if they let him indulge that he might eventually grow tired and bored of it and might one day grow up and see reason. 

Nash never did, though, setting his sights on dragons. As with any new obsession, Nash couldn’t just make it a hobby and instead made his entire life about it, eventually having to convince his parents to let him go to university, though with strings attached: upon graduating, he would have to finally give their world a chance. 

Nash has since then allowed his natural penchant for laziness to aid him in stretching out his stint at Hogwarts, purposefully taking classes he knew would be of no use to him in his desired degree and even taking a break in his second year, to then start over in his third and stretch out his time to five years instead of the usual three. 

However, running out of ways to stay at Hogwarts and the teachers on his back about graduating, he is fast approaching his final year with growing trepidation and uncertainty of how he’ll get out of needing to join the muggle, financial world once he finally graduates.

“Okay. Give me a minute to think,” she knew she didn’t have a minute or any time to think but she couldn’t just think in the moment and come up a solution. She had to think through her options, “The only things I think it could be is either she is needing changed, needing fed or needing to go for a nap. But again if she has just woken up then the latter is out of the question.”

“That’s very true,” Emmeline hadn’t considered it in that light, but what parent would entrust their child to complete strangers? Emmeline didn’t even want to think about the answer to that question, or go into what type of parents would do this to a newly born infant, by the looks of her. “What the actual fuck?” she exclaimed when she heard the worst sounds she had ever heard. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she was, half banshee that is,” she said, unable to believe anything so small could make such a noise.

“Well? What the fuck do we do?” He looked at her, eyes wide, already feeling lost. None of the creatures he’d looks after ever let out a noise that annoying.

“Well, a little but if I was doing this by myself, I’d definitely be freaking out by now.” Emmeline smiled at him, hoping to reassure him she wasn’t worried but just had the normal about of nerves for looking after some strangers’ baby. “It depends on what it is.”

“Well, sure, but imagine how much the parents must be freaking out thinking of two idiots trying to win some money taking care of their infant child.” Then again, Nash supposed anyone who signed up their baby for this, might have questionable parenting abilities to begin with. That or they really needed a vacation. Nash opened his mouth to dive some more into what she might have meant by that, but didn’t even get the chance to utter another syllable as a blood curdling scream left the bassinet. Nash covered his ears at the high pitched wailing. “Is that baby half banshee?”

Emmeline laughed, “I’m trying to live in the moment more and not worry. So far it’s working.” She was glad she was looking after the baby with someone because if she had to do it herself then she would probably be freaking out around about now. “Yes. It’s actually quite easy, I can show you when she is needing changed that is.”

“Are you worried?” he asked. Nash wasn’t sure if he would define his own nerves as outright worried. He wondered if he should be worried too. “Ace. They don’t need to be changed too much, do they?” 

Emmeline nodded, before looking down at the baby again and thinking about what to do. Maybe it would sleep for a while and that would take up some of the time. Here’s hoping. “Well, I would say it’s the same. Just different parameters. So we’ve both had some experience taking care of something.” She smiled at Nash briefly, “I think we’ll be okay.” She said, feeling hopeful but again it was early hours and a lot could change in a matter of minutes.

“That’s the spirit,” said Nash at her bout of confidence. “Besides, if knocked up teenagers can do it, so can we.” Though he supposed it might have been different knowing the child was your own as opposed to being a baby sitter. “So, when you say you’ve watched younger kids before, were they young enough to have nappies that you changed?” Truly, that is what scared Nash most. 

Emmeline didn’t know what to expect when signing up for the fiendfyre dating but this definitely wasn’t it. Yes, she had looked after her cousins growing up but they had been toddlers or older. No babies. “I’m actually not sure,” she laughed slightly, “I have younger cousins but I’ve never looked after them at this age. This is new for me.” She was just glad the baby wasn’t crying. Yet.

“Well, I’ve never taken care of any one,” declared Nash. Most of his extended family was back in South Korea. “But, I have taken care of lots of creatures, baby ones, even. Fed them, cleaned them, looked after them. Baby is basically just another creature, right? I mean, we’re all just a type of animal in the end, which means, this should be a piece of cake. The best part is, baby doesn’t even have fangs or claws or the ability to spit poison or acid, so the dangerous part of trying to care of creatures isn’t even there. Although--” He looked back at the baby as if he was double checking. “Yeah, no fangs. Just a couple of teeth.”

“You find us a place to play, and I’ll even invite you over to practice. It’d be embarrassing and stupid to get on stage without figuring things out first.” That seemed like a normal friendship thing to do.

“Or, it could be a fun exercise in sight reading if we have music, but we might get booed off stage, so that seems like a good.” Nash picked up a record. “I’ll be in touch as soon as I find place. And no backing out, yeah?” He grinned before he moved to the front to make his purchase. More than anything, he was excited for this new venture. 

“Uh, yeah. You’re a horrible rich person.” By horrible, Hattie merely meant that he wasn’t wielding his wealth like some sort of weapon or addiction. By horrible, what she really was saying was, good on you for not being a complete ass about it.

“Yeah, I have a feeling my parents would agree with you. However, what I am good at, is spending money to prop up my hobbies and interest,” said Nash. “I’ll find some place where we could play. Besides, London’s got a thousand pubs, bound to be one we could play in.” 

Lily chewed on the edge of her thumbnail. It was guilt that churned in her stomach now. She didn’t have to goad Petunia, nor rise to her level. But it was difficult to turn the other cheek or stay on any high ground when you were constantly being told what a freak you were. “It’s alright if they come here. Or if we meet up somewhere else, or I go home to see them when she isn’t there.” Lily had learned to play a clever game of avoidance. It only got difficult during holidays.

“Still,” said Nash. He couldn’t imagine it was easy on her parents to know there was that rift between their two children, especially given that it sounded like her family actually cared for her wellbeing. “Can’t pick family, though. That’s the nice thing about growing up and having friends, though, yeah? You can pick them. It is my favorite trope, you know, the whole found family deal.”

“Yes. But I could stop.” She pointed at him, as though it were a threat. As though, even now, she was counting herself lucky to have anyone at all. Not in the self-demeaning way, or the self-pitying. Only acknowledging that no one had to like her. No one had to be around her. All of this was choice, and it oscillated wildly between freeing and absolutely terrifying.

“Let me ask you a very important question then.” Hattie eyed him. “Have you tried bribery?”

“No,” said Nash. “Do I look like the sort of person who tries to bribe others into doing what I want them to do with money?” He paused. “Should I be doing that more often?”

“Sounds boring. I think I’d pay people off.” She didn’t actually know if this was a joke or not, which should’ve had her feeling worried, but mostly, Hattie knew it was never something she’d have to wrestle with. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe, like, a proper stage, indoors? I really hate the cold.” Her fingers would get numb the moment she began strumming.

“You hang out with me already, though, don’t you?” grinned Nash. “Well, sure, we can mill about pubs and other places with stage and see if anyone would let us play. I’ve never actually tried to see if they’d let me play,” he admitted. “Only ever done karaoke and any idiot can do that.”

“And are you?” It didn’t matter that it was too personal a question, it had already been asked before she could decide to keep it to herself. She looked away from the screen to better gauge his answer, whatever it would be. On screen, she lost a life when her negligence landed her in a trap. 

“Uhm…” She giggled, not knowing where to suggest he start, either. “Find a Romanian penpal?”

“Yeah, for the time being,” said Nash with a non committal shrug. “Happiness isn’t persistent, though, is it? Sometimes you are and sometimes you aren’t, but that’s okay. If you were happy all the time, then it would get awfully boring because then we wouldn’t know what it was like to be anything but and then it becomes contaminated.” 

“You should’ve led with that as a part of your initial introduction with me. I would’ve been much nicer.” She was grinning, though a some part of her found it easy to be slightly annoyed that everyone in her life seemed to have money flowing out of their ears. “A park? In winter?”

“Yeah, but, see, I want people to like me for me and not how much money my parents have,” said Nash in a mostly joking tone. “What? Have you not got a coat? Where would you propose we duet?”
