We were so honored to be featured on NPR today talking about this incredibly bad flu season (although we're not very excited about this horrible epidemic!) While we are only briefly featured, our full conversation with Ailsa Chang touched on the importance of the sick days that SmartSitting families give to their sitters, and how this should be standard in the industry. We need to make sure our sitters, children, and parents are staying healthy, and one vital piece of that is ensuring that sitters feel comfortable asking for sick days. To everyone who is still sick - feel better soon!! Thanks so much to the last minute SmartSitters who have jumped in to help out families affected by the flu in a pinch.

June Highlights

Every month, our amazing team of babysitters and nannies tell us about all the incredible things that they have done in the past month with their SmartKids. We love hearing their funny and heart-warming stories and wanted to share with you some of our favorite June SmartSitting moments.

Come Meet SmartSitting This Summer!

Lead directed by Summer Matthews, who happens to be the talented younger sister of not one, but two fabulous SmartSitters in the network, this beautiful short film shows kids explaining everything to do with dreams in their own very unique ways. Ever since Poppy broke her leg, we’ve been relying far too much on the t.v. to keep us entertained. Unfortunately, all this t.v. time isn’t good for any of us. P freaks out when you say “no” to her favorite shows and, frankly, I’m over it. So today, we watched one episode of Diego over breakfast then turned it off and opted to play Diego instead. It’s amazing what a printer, some laminating paper, an old box, and a pair of scissors can create. P’s been happily playing with her new Diego “dolly” set for the last hour, rescuing animals left and right.

Awesome.

An incredible art installation called The Obliteration Room uses the simplest and most accessible children's pasttimes: stickers. The artist constructed a home environment, painted every single item white, and gave out thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers to children visiting the museum. Click the photo to see the amazing transformation of this white home. Such a simple and brilliant way to collaborate.

Try this the next time you meet a little girl. She may be surprised and unsure at first, because few ask her about her mind, but be patient and stick with it. Ask her what she's reading. What does she like and dislike, and why? There are no wrong answers. You're just generating an intelligent conversation that respects her brain. For older girls, ask her about current events issues: pollution, wars, school budgets slashed. What bothers her out there in the world? How would she fix it if she had a magic wand? You may get some intriguing answers. Tell her about your ideas and accomplishments and your favorite books. Model for her what a thinking woman says and does. Here's to changing the world, one little girl at a time.

SmartSitter Anna Taylor Gets in the Halloween Spirit!

What do you love about working with your SmartKids? I could be biased, but these are possibly the smartest, most adorable boys on the planet! They are very affectionate and have a curiosity for life that us adults would be jealous of. I always look forward to the next time I'm going to see them, they are pretty irresistible! You're so artistic and talented in the face-painting and cookie decorating departments! What was your favorite part of getting the kids into the Halloween spirit? Probably that they were so excited. They wanted to do all the activities at one time! Mom definitely got them jazzed for their day of Halloween activities before I arrived, and I got to see all that excitement come to fruition. I always loved that my mom was artistic and shared special moments with us kids growing up, so it was really fun being able to share my artistic talents with my SmartKids. How do you get your SmartKids as excited on any old regular day? I'm always trying to remember what I liked to play as a kid. When they are tired of books or toys, there is still so much we can do with our imaginations. I try to remember all of the make believe games that I used to like growing up and incorporate them into our everyday routines.
