This year I'm making January my month of doing all the responsible adult things that I always put off or avoid doing. So far I've ticked off ā Annual dental checkup + scheduled appointment for the first set of dental work that I've needed for years but been avoiding ā Applied to transfer my credit card debt with a 0% balance transfer offer ā Organised life and income protection insurance ā Changed to new bank account with $0 monthly fees ā Cleaned out upstairs spare room, organising, selling, donating and disposing of a bunch of stuff that was cluttering up the place ā Organised a property valuation to start the process of selling my current house ā Reviewed my superannuation to make sure I'm getting a good deal ā Started saving a bucket load of cash by making coffee at home instead of buying it ā Planned out my budget for 2017 ā Spoke with 2 banks about home loans Despite all of this, I still feel on a daily basis like I'm not making any progress in life, which is why I want to start documenting and celebrating the wins more. Putting it all in a big list like this, when I'm only 11 days into the month does make it feel like I've achieved a lot more then I realised. I'll see how I go and for the next few weeks try and either post summary lists like this every 7-10 days, or post stuff daily / as it happens.

Last night I successfully got my first iOS app running on my phone! It's still early days, and there is a lot of work required before it's ready for production, but it feels super exciting to be able to see and play with it on my phone. #smallwins

Hello 2016! Had an awesome day yesterday, ending 2015 on a high, and I'm going to make today awesome as well and set the tone for the year ahead. Went paddling this morning. And just finished writing out my goals for January in my new journal. Today is going to be a day focussed on getting organised and taking action, whilst having fun and making the most of the day.
Today Iāve made the decision to start putting aside 10% of whatever money I earn into a savings account. Itās something Iāve heard over and over again, but thought that I didnāt make enough to allow myself to do this just yet.Ā
I was talking to someone this morning, who was telling me about friends he had who were earning $200k/year, and have nothing to show for it, and how amazed they were that he was able to pay off his own house on his salary.Ā
I donāt earn a lot of money, but Iām pretty damn happy, and realised I fall into this category too. Considering my income, Iām doing really god damn well. Last year I made approx $20,000. Which is like half minimum wage. But I have a car, a pretty nice house, a kayak, a surf ski, a bike, a dog and pretty much everything I need right now. I donāt go out and buy stuff very often, and I live on the basics for food, but I do have all the things that I need in my life.
In my head Iāve considered what my life would be like once I start earning more money. How Iād be paying off my debts, saving money to buy things (new laptop and an Apple Watch) for cash instead of racking up more credit card debt, how Iād be saving money for the future etc, etc. And I realised that in my head, I was basing all of this on magically getting big chunks of money into my account, that I could then divvy up. But that isnāt really how it works. Being self-employed some weeks you get paid more, some weeks you donāt get paid at all. And on those weeks where you do get paid more, itās very easy to go out and spend it quickly, paying off bills, and getting yourself the occasional treat for good work.Ā
All of this made me realise that I need to start putting aside savings money now, and doing it consistently. Living week to week isnāt smart (which I already knew but didnāt feel like I had any other options)Ā and that even a tiny amount of regular savings put aside from each pay check is going to start creating good habits with money.Ā
So as of today, each time I take money out of one of my businesses, Iām going to put aside 10% of that into a savings account. Since right now my regular income is only $200 that works out to be $20/week. ItāsĀ notĀ much, but itās better then $0/week which is where I was at. Iāll define some rules later with how I spend this savings, but for now the plan is to just see how long I can stick with it, without having to resort to spending it, or not putting the money aside. It would be nice to potentially use this to buy some of the bigger ticket items Iād like, but I also realise that it would be nice to just have a bit of a safety blanket of income in the bank account so Iām not so stressed about living week to week all the time.Ā
First time back in the pool after God knows how long. Forgot how much I actually enjoy swimming. Looking forward to getting back into it. Day 3 of doing something active everyday.
Starting Sunday with a win. Turns out I haven't done UTR in a year. Was a good ride. First bit was really good, last bit sucked, but glad we made the drive out.
New post on the blog. Choose a dog for the pic because I love dogs and today is about doing what makes me happy.Ā http://wakeupexcited.com.au/2015/12/the-domino-effect/

Wednesday last week after a discussion with Luke I decided to give Meteor a bit of a play. Not even a week later Iām hooked and have started rebuilding my dashboard app Iāve been working on over to Meteor now. Feeling pretty stoked about how much Iāve been able to learn in just a few days, and excited about where to go from here. Iām really enjoying programming at the moment, and Iāve always wanted my thing to be making apps, so hopefully this helps speed up that process and get my ideas to market even quicker.Ā
After wanting to learn about using Git to backup my projects better for the last few months, today thanks to Luke I got it all setup and working. Now I just need to get into the habit of using it.Ā
Yay! Last week I auditioned to be part of Pat Flynnās launch team for his new bookĀ āWill It Flyā. I am so damn excited for this book, and even more excited now that I get a preview copy!Ā
And just when I thought today couldnāt get any better,Ā he just replied to my tweet. This had made my day!!! Now to take this excitement and put it to good use and work on my project :)Ā
And Pat if you happen to stumble across this, you are so damn awesome, thank you so much for everything you do. You are changing lives for the better and everyday you inspire me to take action and do the same.
Iāve been doing more programming the last few weeks and Iāve been struggling a bit internally with how PHP doesnāt have standard naming conventions.Ā
Today I decided to stop for 15 mins and decide how I want to format my code. Ā Found a great coding reference guide from Wordpress, and that most of their conventions fit perfectly with my style of coding. Since Iām doing more wordpress based coding now, this feels like a good fit, so starting today my code is going to be formatted consistently and save me all the time back and forth trying to remember if I used underscores or camelCase.Ā
Today I started a new run at trying to get my work inboxes to zero at the end of each day. It feels good to see theĀ āInbox Zeroā message. I donāt know how long Iāll be able to keep this up, but Iād like to give it a solid try. Iām achieving this through the use of tags so that when an email comes through I decide to either a) respond, b) archive or c) tag to be dealt with at a scheduled time later. Iād also like to start having assigned times to deal with emails as well. For now Iāll probably just aim to do it once every 1-2 hours and then close it, but Iāll need to work on defining this part better as well so email can stop controlling my life and stressing me out.Ā

Cleaned the kitchen and vacuumed the house before work this morning to start the day off on a win. Also did a little bit of writing on my book. Small steps.
