He had been your college roommate for two years in college. In some ways, you were best friends -- but not always. In fact, the three times when you'd had a girlfriend during that period of time, he had eventually seduced, and stolen, the girl from you.

And so -- you were surprised, now that it had been a little over five years since the last time you had communicated with him -- when you got a facebook message from him saying that he had taken a job in the area where you were now living and would love to get together "for old times sake" -- and he mentioned that he didn't know a lot people in the area. You weren't eager, but didn't want to be rude or unfriendly. You invited him to come to your (and your wife's) place for the weekend.

You ended up picking him up after work on Friday, and after exchanging some of the usual pleasantries, the conversation took a turn.

"So" he said "Tell me about your wife. Honestly, I never thought you'd find a woman to marry you. What's she like? Pretty?"

You got a little uncomfortable at the question.

"Why do you want to know?" you said with a bit of tone to your voice.

He just laughed at that. "Whoa. I didn't mean anything by the question, buddy. Just curious I guess."

You calmed down. "Yes -- she's wonderful really. And yes -- very pretty. We met at church and have only been married about two months. I really feel lucky to be married to her. And -- well -- I guess I'd gotten edgy about your question because of -- you know -- the way you had taken my girlfriends from me in college. I know how charming with women you can be. You .. uh .. you wouldn't try anything with my wife, would you?"

He laughed again. "So -- you do remember how I took girls from you in college eh. Remember with the third one -- how pretty she was -- and how, as soon as you started referring to her as your girlfriend, a bunch of the guys actually had a betting pool about how long it would be until I slept with her and stole her from you. Do you remember that? It was really funny, eh, the way a couple of the guys kept telling you that it was only a matter of time -- and one of them even said that to you right in front of her and told you what the bet was all about when she asked him what he meant by that. And yeah -- turned out it really was only a matter of time, right. Remember -- the party, when your girlfriend got pretty drunk and made you introduce her to "the guy the bet was about" -- meaning me -- and then she actually started flirting with me and ended up spending the night with me -- and never went out with you again. Do you remember all that?"

Of course, you did remember -- but the memories were not really funny for you. They were pretty painful, actually.

"Please" you replied. "Yes, I remember -- and please -- it would be devastating if you did that with my wife. Please don't try. She is very sweet and pretty, and, well -- she's kind of the type I remember you really liked -- but please don't make any moves on her. PLEASE."
