Pokemon just SUCKs now...
I have noticed a growing trend in Pokemon over each new generation... the trend of it getting crappier and crappier.
In first generation, all the Pokemon we extremely cool. They were either unique creatures, re-imagined monsters from legends or fairy tales, or cartoonish real animals. Their appearances were great, good attacks, and it was the start of an amazing adventure with an entirely new concept of gaming.
Generation II comes along, and a lot more interesting concepts were added to the game. Breeding, Special Attack and Defense stats, new attacks, new types, and many more aspects were added to make the game more level. But unfortunately, this new generation was a bit lacking in the Pokemon department. There are only a few new Pokemon that stand out in generation II, including Donphan, Heracross, and Tyranitar. Many of the new Pokemon types are based on the old Pokemon, such as the eeveelutions, baby pokemon, Kindra, and Politoad. Its great to give new evolutions, especially when certain Pokemon need it, but this generation RELIES on them. More and more I keep finding myself relying mostly on generation l Pokemon whenever I play crystal, and not because I'm to attached to generation I, but because I don't find many other Pokemon that benefit my team. And though the introduction of baby Pokemon was great for big Pokemon with high stats such as Electabuzz, Magmar, and Snorlax, did Pikachu, Jiggilypuff, and Clefairy really REALLY need a baby form. Seems too much like a marketing gimmick to me.
On a side note, I keep noticing the subtle message of the elite 4 being that people in the Pokemon universe should just judge between strong and weak pokemon, and yet most of them have incredibly strong Pokemon with high stats. I haven't seem one of them use a Dunsparce, Delibird, or Smeargle.
In generation III we were still introduced to a lot of great gaming concepts, such as double battles, which really changed the strategy of gaming. And this generation actually did a lot to create new Pokemon. We have my personal favorite Medicham, and Gardevoir, Flygon, Altaria, and Metang, as well as a lot of honorable mentions. Of course this generation had some bad Pokemon, like Lovedisk and Spinda, but we can forgive this because we don't have to play them. But this generation continued two trends which has been increasingly bothering me, an increasingly large amount of legendary Pokemon, TEN difference Legendaries. I generally dislike legendary Pokemon, I either find them overrated or overpowered. I don't like using Pokemon that automatically start off head and shoulders above other Pokemon. There is about a 300 stat difference between a Butterfree and Rayquaza, there is no competition. Honestly Pokemon shouldn't have more than a 100 or even 150 stat difference in their adult forms, because it takes away from the strategy if you can just plow over your competition. The other bad trend is same formula for every game. We have our three grass, fire, water starters, which I am mostly fine with, but then our flying group, crappy rat group, trio or fire, water, and electricity, and finally our cute legendary. Change it up a bit more, invent some new Pokemon, leave a few types out. And finally, another big trend I see is the over complication of Pokemon designs. Its not too bad in this generation, but it starts with Blaziken, who looks weird with its breast feathers and yellow feet. We shall discuss the problems with later Pokemon designs.
Generation 4... There's not many new Pokemon I like in this generation, but I do like Garchomp and Lucario a lot. And some generation 1 and do Pokemon got some desperately needed evolutions, that you for a Misdreavus evolution, and Magnetzone looks pretty cool. BUT, there are a lot of things wrong with this generation. Firstly, did we need Electravire and Magmortar. I mean, Electravire is pretty cool looking, but ATTACK is the only stat increase, at least bring his Special Attack up a big, we don't like Pokemon that are special typed to rely on attacks that mostly aren't special. Magmortar just looks like crap, why did he have to be so fat and pink, aweful. And of all Pokemon to get an evolution, we give them to Likatung, Rhydon, and AIPOM, not only do they look like crap, but there are many more Pokemon that could use an evolution. And guess what, 14 new legendary Pokemon, how special. Are we going to run our of legends any time soon? Finally, did Infernape really need those golden breastplates. Would have been so cool if he just looked like a normal creature without too many accessories. Nope, give him breastplates.
The fifth generation was just AWEFUL. The starters are WAY too overdecorated, to the point that they don't look like Pokemon anymore, but animals on a runway fashion show. We have those grass, fire, water monkeys that look really stupid and make no sense, a fetus pig creature that's a psychic type, a fat bloated ghost jellyfish, a garbage bag, an icecream cone, a psychic baby in a jello shot, and to cogs stug together. I am sorry, but these designs just suck. There are a few that are interesting, I really like Scrafty, a dark/fighting type, and then Chandelure and Haxorus look awesome, and finally Volcarona gives the Bug Pokemon some good power. But really, this is what we have now for Pokemon? And you can count 14 legendaries again, and most of these look absolutely terrible. One has a jetpack on its butt, three look like a bad cartoon drawing of Zeus, and two stupid looking deer.
And now we have Generation VI... We see the starter Pokemon, and they look kind of cool, but I am worried how their evolutions will look, and am praying that we don't have a Fire/Fighting type. But we see two new legendaries, both of which look really weird to me. And finally two more Pokemon, Sylveon and a weird looking Mewtwo. Why the hell is there a new Mewtwo looking thing. Not only does it look stupid, but I'm not even sure how this is going to work. I hope it isn't an evolution, Because Mewtwo is freaking too powerful already. And what the HELL is wrong with Sylveon. To start, it looks stupid. It had a bow in its head, which I am fine with, but it has a ridiculously large bow under its chin, overkill. It has ribbons, is pink, big blue eyes, and above all, NO OBVIOUS TYPING. Every single eeveelution is easily typable. It doesn't take a genius to figure out out that Jolteon is Electric, Leafeon is grass, and Umbreon is dark. Maybe the most challenging on is Espeon, but even that one is fairly obvious. Now we have mystery new eeveelution that is unrecognizable and looks completely crappy compared to the rest. I honestly hoped they had taken some of the fan illustrations of possible eeveelutions, because many of them look amazing and are instantly recognizable. But this is what we are reduced to.
I think Pokemon needs to reevaluate itself. What do you all think?
