This is my kitty, Erika. She was born blind and sustained a spinal cord injury when she was little. She came to the shelter pregnant and gave birth there and then they were all picked up by a local rescue organization where I adopted her from. Anyway, she’s the best most cuddly cat (and she is so pretty!) and I love her so much

These are my cats, Slartibartfast (above) and Boston (below). Both @boston-and-slartibartfast were adult cats when I got them. Boston’s about 11. I adopted him about 3 ½ years ago. He has a very slight limp and a little neurological weirdness from being attacked by a dog as a kitten. He sleeps next to my pillow every night and loves to rest his head in my hand when he sleeps. Slarti is around 3. I adopted him last fall. He has radial hypoplasia (a malformation of his front legs) and had been abused in a previous home. For weeks after I first adopted him he hid behind a bookshelf. I would sit nearby and try to lure him out with bits of canned chicken and he would come out for a little longer every day. When he realized that Boston was part of the household everything started to change. Slarti wanted nothing more than to be BFF with Boston. He started coming out of hiding to seek out his new idol, first only in the wee hours of the morning when all the lights were out but increasingly at all hours. Being near Boston meant being near me, and being near me meant being offered various kitty treats at unpredictable intervals, and offered catnip (VERY appealing!), and then he started enjoying toys and scritches. Boston still gets a bit exasperated when Slarti tries to get super snuggly with him, but he’s delighted to have someone to play chase and pounce games with. Kittens are adorable and sweet but for me, adopting adult cats is where it’s at.

This is Augustus (shown here helping me with my thesis), and it’s very difficult to take a decent picture of him because he basically spends his life on my lap. He’s FIV+ and lost part of his tail in an accident. We don’t know what life he led before he ended up in a shelter but he’s an incredibly sweet, fun, snuggly cat, the kind of cat everybody loves. The volunteers at the shelter were so incredibly happy when we decided to adopt him, and he bonded with us in about 3 seconds. He’s almost 8, so please don’t buy into the idea that older cats won’t love you as much as kittens. They will. Don’t overlook them, they deserve a home and a loving family just as much as their younger counterparts, and they have so much to give.

This is Sparkles! We adopted her from a shop that takes in strays or unwanted cats and tries to rehome them. She had come in as a baby with her abandoned litter on 4th of July (they all got names like Sparkler, Roman Candle, Firework, etc.), and we’re pretty sure she was once adopted out of there and then returned (which baffles me cause she’s perfect and silly). So we got her when she was like 3 ½, and she has some pretty clear abandonment issues. Once she got comfortable and more sure of us though, she has been the happiest, silliest cat ever. She has full conversations with you, she’ll follow you all around the house so she can nap adjacent to wherever you are, and she’ll run to you screaming with her favorite shoe string in her mouth to ask you to play. I am so so glad I connected with her at the cat shop and took home my adult baby, she’s perfect. Defs recommend adult cats to anyone looking. And if you’re in Nashville, check out The Cat Shoppe!
