Q&A with Rob Rey about his art for Thrumming Hivepool.
Q: What inspirations did your draw from when working on Thrumming Hivepool?
A: I certainly looked through lots of other sliver cards to see what other artists had done with the creatures. The prompt included that this was to be a vessel filled with silver liquid, so obviously cultural references like Terminator 2 came to mind immediately with its liquid metal villain. For reference, I found a video by the Slow Mo Guys on Youtube very useful where they filmed liquid gallium metal in various ways: pouring, splashing, and spun around in a blender.
Q: Were there any particular points where you deviated from the prompt or did you stick to it pretty tightly?
A: I did follow the prompt pretty closely. It mentioned that the cavern used to be a place of worship. I probably took this too far where one of my sketches included a religious looking relief sculpture of several figures on the back wall. I think the art director was probably correct to nix this as it was probably too distracting from the main focus of the image, the slivers. However, I do like the gold design motifs I came up with for the left and right sides of the image that feel vaguely religious, but also vaguely sharp and dangerous.
Q: What are your thoughts regarding slivers as whole?(whether in the actual card game or just appearance wise)
A: They're pretty damn creepy. Actually, I've never been into horror movies, and monsters aren't a particular interest for me, so this commission was a bit outside of my comfort zone. It was a fun challenge though and I would be happy to do it again. I enjoyed the process of figuring out how to paint the liquid metal.
Q: Whatâs your favorite part of the art you drew for Thrumming Hivepool?
A: I like the tails whipping out of the liquid and the way the liquid dribbles down the outside of the roughly textured vessel. I like the glow I created below the vessel. I like the implied meaning of the crack running down the back wall and between the cloud motif, giving the sense of a cataclysmic event as the slivers emerge.
Q: Do you have any trivia or a fun fact regarding Thrumming Hivepool?
A: The funniest thing for me about this image is that the idea of the single sliver breaking the surface of the liquid in a dramatic whipping motion, for some reason, strongly brought to mind the iconic scene from The Little Mermaid, where Ariel breaks the ocean surface and whips her hair out of the water. The thought of this sliver performing a similarly dramatic scene, with perhaps the same dramatic music, just makes me laugh every time I think about it. The Little Slivermaid.
Q: Did you work with the artist who did the sliver token art at all or did you work independently?
A: I worked independently. Though as I said earlier, I looked at all the other sliver art I could find before I started work on this image to make sure I was getting it right.
Q: Is there anywhere fans can go to pick up pieces of your other work or maybe an artist proof of the card once it releases?
A: My website is Robreyart.com, which has an "Available Works" page to easily see what originals I have available. There is also a link to my print store, where I will probably be listing artist proofs soon. If there's something you would like to see added to the print store, just get in touch and let me know.
Q: Is there anything else you want to say about the work?
A: Thanks for including me in your podcast! I hope you enjoy it!
Questions and Answers from Lucas Graciano About His Drawing of Megantic Sliver.
What (if any) inspirations did your draw from when working on Megantic Sliver?
This assignment was a chance to paint a fun âencounter in the forestâ kinda image. I love to paint creatures as well as landscapes. The late Richard Schmid was always a favorite painter of mine and his loose textural approach to landscapes inspired me to try that here.Â
Do you remember what details Wizards of the Coast gave you for the specifics of the art? (Color, environment, pose, etc.)
This assignment was so long ago, I donât remember the exact brief but it was something along the lines of âpaint a hulking Sliver in the forestâ. I got to design this Sliver. Itâs fun extrapolating from whatâs already established and making it relatable to the audience while putting my own fingerprint on it.
What are your thoughts regarding the slivers of MTG as a whole? (whether in the actual card game or just appearance wise)
I donât know much about how they work in game but I love their designs from an art standpoint. Lots of fun shapes to work with.Â
Whatâs your favorite part of the art you drew for Megantic Sliver?
Hmm. Not sure here. Maybe the overall mood and lighting. I was pretty happy with the textural quality of the landscape as well, though I had Richard Schmid to lean on there.Â
Do you have any trivia or fun fact you remember from when you were working on Megantic Sliver?
I believe this was the first Sliver I painted for MtG. Iâve done a couple more since.Â
Another card for Magic: The Gathering's Edge of Eternities set has just been posted! A bit of a different subject for me, but it was a good time creating this writhing soup of slivers. Art Director: Taylor Ingvarsson ___ Offers for the original painting are being heard until Sunday night. Within the deepest âitâs so overâ I find an ever present âweâre so backâ.
Thereâs ~4 days left on Jeff Miracolaâs Playmat kickstarter. Lots of good art here if youâre in the market for a playmat and itâs about 2k away from adding slivers and beebles to the available options. Give it a look if that interests you.

A Text copy of our Questionaire answered by Ron Spencer regarding his art for Heart Sliver.
What, if any, inspirations did your draw from when working on Heart Sliver?
There was a VERY detailed and specific style guide sent to the artists. Contained in that was a drawing of a Sliver by Anson Maddocks.  That illustration provided the basic anatomy of the Slivers. His piece featured the Sliver with a H.R. Giger translucence. Â
The art description that they provided for the Heart Sliver required that it was in a volcanic environment.  With that in mind, I swapped the transparent skin for a thicker looking, gray hide. Â
To make it vary from the provided reference, I gave it a gnarled, crusty look. The Heart Sliver needed to blend into the walls and ceiling of a lava cavern, not a spaceship's vent pipes.
Aside from those changes, I stuck with the general anatomy requirements - elongated / beaked / eyeless head, one spiked arm, some type of extrusions on the back and two tails.
Do you remember what, if any, details Wizards of the Coast gave you for the specifics of the card? (Color, environment, etc.)Â
The only thing that I remember from the art assignments description was that it be shown prowling the ceiling of a lava cavern.
The artists werenât given the names of the cards, card mechanics or flavor text.
So we looked at the art guide and the assignment notes and went from there.
What are your thoughts regarding slivers as whole?(whether in the actual card game or just appearance wise)
As monsters go, theyâre fine. Not my favorite but more fun to do than some of the other creatures.
Their non-anthropomorphic anatomy can be a problem for dynamic compositions. Unless the viewer knows exactly what theyâre looking at and is used to seeing Slivers crawling around, they can be very confusing to look at.
Thatâs why nearly all the Sliver art has the creature in a profile type pose or side view. All of body parts are shown with no overlapping. Â
The straight- on, front or back view of a Sliver would be a tangled blob, especially with a background and at card size.
All of that being said, theyâre quick and fun to draw. Maintain the basic anatomy, then start sticking on spikes, talons and corrugated tendons.
Itâs hard to mess up a Sliver.
Whatâs your favorite part of the art you drew for Heart Sliver?
Itâs always fun to draw creatures in fire light. The craggy hide with orange highlights made for a rugged looking beast.
Do you have any trivia or fun fact you remember regarding Heart Sliver?
Only that I was unsure how to make the image interesting.  It needed an aggressive look. So I tried a somewhat frontal /top view with the Sliver moving toward the viewer. As mentioned, the anatomy made this difficult. Â
To keep action in the pose and maintain a discernible figure, I had to turn its head to the side. This made it appear to be distracted or looking around, rather than lunging at the viewer. Â
Not what Iâd originally intended but there were other cards to get done and a deadline looming.Â
Do you have any fun memories from after it was a printed card? E.G. Interactions with the players that stuck with you?
The Heart Sliver seemed to be well received by the players. The autograph stacks included a decent number of that card. Prints sales for that art were fine. Not remarkable but far better than Iâd anticipated.
When asked if it was a tough or good card, the players would shrug and reply that it was good. Not awesome or âbroke" - but still useful.
