this match is definitely better than the median match we’ve seen since even the start of the round of 16. such a contrast with e.g. the spain-portugal match during which i actually nearly discovered whether it was possible to die of boredom

large part of the reason that I’ve always had an aversion to Irish soccer in particular (whereas I’ve vaguely followed the Premier League at points) is the nostalgia about “Italia 90”. stop talking like That about losing a quarter final match after a campaign where you didn’t win a single 90 mins. literally the most embarrassing humiliating behaviour, clinging onto that kind of shit from nearly a decade before I was born. I’d like to see our NT improve again if I thought it would get old men to shut the fuck up about how wonderful it was to lose a match thirty six years ago. DISMAL!

I read several books that were racist or problematic or Traditionalist etc over the past few months out of duty either to their historical importance or my personal curiosity about exactly how bad it was (I don’t want to dismiss something unless I read it myself, etc), and this list included three books of René Guénon’s, some Kipling stories, two novels by Joseph Conrad, the novel The Village in the Jungle by Leonard Woolf, and I am going to read Game Control by Lionel Shriver, but, no matter how used to critical reading you are (and I studied the 1920s-1940s a lot), it gets to be such a drag and quite depressing. and it’s such a relief to read something good or just NICE for a change. I’m reading Iris Murdoch’s ‘The Sovereignty of Good’ and I have 4-5 novels written by women (two from Iran, one from Syria, one from Bulgaria, one from Ireland) and God I’m looking forward to it … the relief

I love Argentina but I just cannot shout for that football team. I kind of have no relation to or opinion of Spain as a country, it’s actually kind of extraordinary how far away from Ireland Spain feels sometimes. maybe other Irish people would not agree because they’ve been there, I haven’t unfortunately. and I probably know less about their history than I do of any other European country. I think my decision to support Spain in the final in the end came down to the principle of them being a young team and Lamine Yamal specifically being so young, I find that admirable.
