this v much varies on a case to case basis on how much you know about art, but if you want faster improvement i suggest (gasp!) copying art styles you like and studying what you like about them!

in my experience, art is about learning the fundamentals (which is super important and i suggest learning regardless bc it helps ur art IMMENSELY), and stylizing is bending reality and making it your own. i’ve had countless artists i looked up to as a kid, and by emulating their styles, i was able to create a form of frankenstein style art that i call my own! 

for example, pinterest is a great way to compile all the art you like and would like to capture the vibe of. its also where i get a lot of my inspiration from!

now i am by no means saying copy art and claim it as your own. this is no way condoning tracing and posting, etc, however i think its very important to copy and see why an artist chooses certain elements and draws that way.

so what i’m saying is, try this: see a piece you like, redraw it, or copy it by eye, and maybe see how much you learned from copying it after! usually after you draw a piece from reference, you end up retaining some information on how it works. so copy a piece you really like, a simple one if its too difficult, and try copying the style on your OWN (without looking if you’re able). see how different/similar the result is after! rinse, repeat.

eventually, you wont need to copy certain images to emulate a look, youll start to develop a style that looks like your own!

again. pleasseeee dont take this as a “i can copy art now????” because what i mean is that its okay to do this in your personal sketchbook or digital files as practice! please don’t post it or claim it as your own if you do end up doing it. its purely STUDY! this is very similar to drawing photographs or drawing from life which is a common practice, except with an already established style. that artist has years under their belt, and went through the same thing trying to build their own style. you’re just doing a liiiiittle shortcut for practice :)
