House Umbrapis is one of the original Great Houses, predating Aegon the Conqueror's rule of Westeros and coming as an Andal invader. Claiming the lands between the river and the reach, making the Hive their own after conquering the First Men and installing their bravest knight, Ser Lorgan, as the King. Ascar Umbrapis, young King of the Hive, had bent the knee and sworn fealty to Aegon to prevent his people's demise so shortly after his father's death, allowing him to keep his land and changing his title to Lord of the Hivelands. Lord Ascar and his men had assisted in the burning of Harrenhal which had also began the long alliance between House Umbrapis and House Tully. However due to that battle he had not participated in the Field of Fire battle nor any other major battle in the name of Aegon. During the legendary Dance of the Dragons, members of House Umbrapis were present. While a majority of the family was on the side of the Greens, especially noted by Kristenne Umbrapis' marriage to Ser Gwayne Hightower in the midst of the civil war, it can be noted that some members did seem to defect as part of the Blacks. It is suspected this era began the historical feud with House Lannister of Casterly Rock. According to Mushroom, Lord Karsen, the brother of Lady Kristenne, may have tried to bed both Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen during his marriage to his wife Lady Khelsi Cargyll. House Umbrapis tangled with House Targaryen once more as Lady Breyna, the great-granddaughter of Lord Karsen, fathered one of King Aegon IV's bastards. Dannys Comb became legitimized upon his father's death, referred to now as one of the "Great Bastards", and he was allowed to take on the Umbrapis name. Multiple members of House Umbrapis were present at the historic tourney at Ashford Meadow. Among them included Lord Kierat Umbrapis, son of Dannys. Also present were his second cousins, Lady Astris, Lord Maxir who was next in line for his seat, and Lord Braeden who was set to participate. It is said to be here that Lord Maxir fell in love with his wife, Lady Celesse of House Dayne. Lord Maxir later made the controversial decision to allow his only child, Lady Eyla Umbrapis, to keep her name and rule as the first Lady of the Hivelands in order to prevent his direct line from dying out. She had multiple children, however only her oldest son has the Umbrapis name, the others taking on that of her husband, Decran Manning. During the War of the Usurper, Lord Hugar had raised his banner in the side of the rebellion due to the history shared with House Tully and to an extent, House Baratheon. It was said that it should have been an easy fight with having the Hivelands on his side, however, the Lord's younger brother Barrock and (later learned) the Lord's own wife Annarel had conspired against him on the side of King Aerys. In the Battle of the Hive, Lord Hugar's oldest son, Bakkar, was slain. Robert had enjoyed Lord Hugar's loyalty, and it was due to that fact that Barrock was allowed to live, however when there was fear of another rebellion after Balon Greyjoy's, the second son Connas was taken as a hostage and ward to the Vale. Lord Hugar's wife had confessed on her death bed her part in the plot, and some believe she was having an affair with Barrock, leaving Lord Hugar with his only daughter Merilith as he remarried to Lady Maecy Estermont.
