i havenāt done a proper show in probably almost two year and stumbling across your blog really just made me so excited again. finally doing full/in person shows this year and i couldnāt be more hyped :D i hope your future shows go well!!
im so glad to hear that!! wishing yāall well <3
Oh good lord it has been TOO LONG since Iāve done a proper drop. And since this space was a lucky limited-time claim, itāll probably be a while before I can do another.
Weāre making the Beastās library!
Thereās this ancient scenic paint colour chart up on a door at one of the theatres I regularly work at and Iām kind of in love with the colours and their names and the way theyāre organised (or not organised?) Iāve never heard of this paint company but I need these colours in my life. Deep chamois! Harbour blue! Burnt chocolate! Smalt!! Itās impossible to choose a favourite!!!

On becoming a scenic painter,
I didnāt realize how much time I would spend painting woodā¦to look like wood.
Floor? Floor.
Theatre Sin Jar
Being late w/o contacting SM.
Calling a lamp a bulb.
Playing with props.
Not replying to emails in a timely manner.
Talking backstage.
Not in stage blacks.
Not hanging up costumes.
Making changes w/o permission.
Sitting on set pieces or show furniture.
Wearing incorrect costume.
Not acknowledging calls.
Not cleaning up after yourself.
Disrespecting crew.
Not checking tech.
Not leaving voicemails.
Breaking sets, or props.
I do technical theater, and use the internet a decent amount. So naturally I scroll through theater content on the internet and something I come across a fair amount is this fake perception that actors and techs have some sort of antagonistic conflict driven relationship, which I personally have not found to be true. While sometimes we can get on each otherās nerves, Iāve only ever encountered a few actors who are constantly pricks towards techs, and none of the techs I know actually hate actors. So to help cultivate a better relationship between techs and actors here are
Things techs want to tell actors but donāt because most of us are big balls of anxiety
If we sound angry at you while doing our job, I can almost guarantee we are not, and are just in a rush so we come off as terse.
We do fuck up, and when we do, we absolutely recognize that it inconveniences you. Sorry⦠š¬
(For theaters/companies where techs put on mics rather than actors putting mics on themselves) During these situations, our number one goal is to make yāall feel safe and comfortable. The process can be awkward, and we try our hardest to reduce that awkward as much as possible.
When yāall do a good job on stage, we can tell and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. Hit that note in the one song? Thereās at least one tech silently cheering in the wings. Nailing the heart-wrenching dramatic scene? At least one tech is given chills by the acting. Dancing your heart out? At least one tech is off stage celebrating the scene with ourā¦often lacklusterā¦dance skills.
When you give us chocolate it absolutely makes out day. Your kindness has absolutely not gone unappreciated.
Your job is massively difficult, and we understand that. Keep going and weāll do what we can to make it easier.
TLDR: Actors, your techs love you, keep going!

āTheater is the petri dish of all performing arts.ā
ā scenic design prof, in the first class of the semester
Still in the process of doing a huge light plot hang, cable and patch by myself but it is coming along pretty well. Canāt focus by myself though. Thanks COVID! Miss working with my fellow techs. Really enjoying my new ETC Ion XE 20. Still waiting on more HES moving lights to arrive to finish everything out. #LonelyLighting

The feelings to have on a catwalk as a lighting person are:
Focus and/or frustrations at a light.
How lovely and peaceful! I wish I could perch up here more often.
Oh yeah, I'm still kinda afraid of heights! Oh well, nothing I can do about it.
a fools guide to not wanting to die anymore
by me, a fool who doesnt wanna die anymoreĀ
never make a suicide joke again. yes this includesĀ āi wanna dieā as a figure of speech. swear off of it. actually make an effort to change how you think about things.
find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.
talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore
picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else
if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.

Thatās some pretty good advice. I donāt know whatās left of my humor after āguess Iāll just dieā jokes but itās worth a shot.
Personally i went from āguess Iāll dieā jokes to āIF I HAVE TO BE HERE FOR 5 MORE MINUTES I PROMISE YOU I WILL BUY JUST, AN ARRAY OF CLOTHES.ā and other wild hyperbolic stuff. Just replace the death part with something ridiculous and off topic. Its very entertaining
This also works with calling myself things like stupid, worthless, trash, etc. Even if you do this jokingly to yourself, your brain still believes it, and keeps up the cycle. Seriously, I found that when I stopped saying these things about myself, even jokingly, it made a massiveĀ difference.
Hereās a tip I picked up from a friend thatās helped me a lot ā replace self deprecating jokes with ironically self aggrandizing jokes
Like every time I trip and fall, instead of saying ālām just a disaster humanā I say āIām the epitome of grace and beautyā
Or like, when I draw a picture Iām not 100% happy with, instead of saying āmy art is trashā I say something like āyou know I think itās time we replaced the Mona Lisaā
When you do that you get to make a joke, but youāre ALSO getting practice building yourself up, yāknow?
And eventually it becomes a reflex and you get so used to it that you can say nice stuff about yourself even when you ARENāT joking
This is so important
