the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
Summary: You set strict rules with your new roommate, including a no kissing rule when you occasionally hook up with him. The problem is, Driver wants to kiss you, and youâre unable to not catch feelings.
Warnings; smut, MDNI, p in v sex, squirting (idek it just happened, I was possessed) I think thatâs it
âIf weâre going to do this, I have rules.â You stand at the door of your two bed apartment, evidently your uncle had hired a new mechanic and he needed a place to stay, conveniently for him your roommate had just moved out.
âOkay.â He takes his toothpick out, placing it behind his ear.
âIf you use the kitchen just donât leave it a mess, donât leave your dirty laundry in the bathroom, and if you must have a girl over put on some music or something.â You rattle off, rolling your eyes at the thought of him bringing girls over for hookups. He blinks at you.
âI can do that.â He nods.
âOh and donât eat cereal in front of me, I canât stand when guys eat cereal.â You earn a smile from him.
âWhat about the girls I have over? Can they eat cereal?â He grins. You roll your eyes.
âYes, actually.â You quip, finally giving him a small smile in return. You step aside, opening the door for him to enter. He closed the door behind him, stepping into the living area that youâll now be sharing.
âSo this is the living room, kitchen is over there,â you point.
âAnd this is your bedroom.â You walk down the hall as he trails behind you. You pushed open the bedroom door, allowing him to look around.
âThank you.â He murmurs, stepping inside, sliding his backpack off onto the nearby chair.
âThe bathroom is down the hall, if you need me Iâll be in here.â You point to your on the other end of the small hallway.
âBut knock fist, and donât just knock and walk in, like wait for me to actually open the door.â You ramble as he nods.
âGot it.â He winces as he sits on the bed, frame creaking below even the tiniest force.
âThatâs why the music is necessary.â You comment. The walls were extremely thin as well, you heard entirely more than you needed to with your last roommate. She was probably the reason the bed frame was so worn out in the first place.
âDonât think youâll have to worry about that, too busy.â He murmurs. Youâre shocked girls werenât practically throwing themselves at him, I mean he was insanely hot, he was quiet, maybe a little mysterious. All it would take was a few tequila shots and youâd be all over him. You make a mental note not to have tequila when heâs home.
âOh okay then, Iâll leave you to it.â You back out of the doorway, pulling it closed with a squeak of the hinges.
That night you were restless, having a mysterious man move in with you, your perfect secluded little bubble being popped. Heâll probably be messy, heâll probably leave the toilet seat up, and leave dishes in the sink, but at least it helps you out with rent.
He proved to be quite useful to have around, contrary to what you had thought. He took the trash out, he cooked for you a couple nights a week, and stayed pretty quiet, he mostly kept to himself, aside from the occasional movie night on the couch. Sometimes youâd even catch him getting interested in whatever romcom or drama you were watching.
âOh come on just kiss her.â You roll your eyes, mumbling to yourself about the movie youâre watching. You didnât feel his presence behind you, but Driver had stood there, taking in your form, curled up in the blanket, watching a romcom on a Friday night. He wonders why a girl like you isnât out, meeting someone, on a date, or at a bar. Heâs admittedly observed you probably too closely, cataloging your likes and dislikes, what you laugh at, what pushes your buttons. So far he likes what he's seen. He canât find a reason why someone else hasn't seen it yet. Maybe you know youâre too good for them, settling for a quiet life rather than suffering a relationship or hook up that would never satisfy you.
It wasnât long before he was proven wrong. You stumbled in late one night, in a black minidress and strappy heels. You knew Driver was usually out late doing god knows what, thinking it was safe, you bring home the man you had met at the club. You had a few shots and worked up the courage to allow his advances. It wasnât bad, it was just sex after all, but no one ever left you satisfied. It always took too long for you to get there. They were long finished before you had even started the race. I mean in what world would anyone be able to cum from thirty seconds of sex with no foreplay? Maybe it was your fault, you had to be doing something wrong.
Driver listened through the paper thin walls as you sweetly kicked the guy out, promising to text him. He felt bad for eavesdropping, only catching the final notes of your encounter. He felt the faint burning of jealousy in the pit of his stomach for a moment, wishing it had been him coaxing those sounds out of you.
Heâs jolted from his daydreaming at the slamming of your bedroom door followed by muffled crying. Heâs confused at first, why would you be crying if you just got laid? He hesitates for a moment, before knocking on your door.
âWhatâs the matter?â He mumbles outside the door. You sit up wiping your face, probably smearing your makeup even worse in the process.
âNothing. Sorry. Did I wake you?â You crack your door open slightly, just enough for him to see one half of your face, not wanting to expose your disheveled state.
âNo. Can I,â he pauses, trying to find the right words.
âCan I do anything?â His brows draw in concern.
âNo Iâm just frustrated, you c-canât help with what I need help with.â You stumble.
âOkay. Let me know if you change your mind.â He walks back to his room.
He wasnât sure what you had meant that night for a few weeks, it wasnât until he had overheard you on the phone with one of girlfriends.
âNo it was just another disappointing hookup, I think itâs me, I must be the problem.â You twirled your hair absentmindedly.
âI canât really be mad at them, it takes an act of god for me to make myself cumâ you giggled. So thatâs why you had been frustrated. He had read you perfectly the first time, you were never satisfied.
With this new information, he had decided not to ignore the next time he heard your soft whimpers through the walls at night, small bullet vibrator between your legs, eyes screwed shut trying to focus on your pleasure. You gasped when he knocked on the door, shutting it off and tucking it out of sight under your pillow.
âI can help you.â He cut straight to the point as you cracked your door open.
âExcuse me?â You breathe, hand resting on your hip, the other on the door.
âJust an offer. If you want.â He rests a hand on the doorframe, leaning on it slightly.
âAn offer?â You question.
âIâm gonna need you to be a little more clear.â You raise your brows.
âSex, my hands, my mouth. Whatever you want.â He shrugs.
âOh,â you blush at the realization he had heard you, maybe heard you more than once.
âWhatâs in it for you?â You narrow your eyes to look up at him, leaning over you in your doorway.
âOh trust me I get all I need out of it.â He assures you. You bite your lip in thought before opening your door, letting him stalk into your room.
âI have some rules though.â You warn.
âYou got a lot of rules.â He laughs, shaking his head.
âCondoms always, and no kissing on the lipsâ You admit, looking down as he sits on your bed.
âNo kissing?â He appears shocked.
âJust to not get too attached. I donât know, just a rule Iâve always had for hookups.â You explain, sitting down next to him.
âKissing anywhere else is fine?â He asks, reaching a hand up to brush your hair away from your neck.
âYeah.â You breathe, feeling him lean into you to press his lips against the side of your neck. He kisses downward, sucking gently on the hollow above your collarbone. You hesitate for a moment, unsure what to do with your hands before your body takes over, sliding a hand up his thigh to palm him through his jeans.
âMmhmmâ he shakes his head.
âYou first.â He pulls away to guide you to lay down on the bed, pulling up your t-shirt, underwear long forgotten, he sucks in a breath at the sight of you already dripping with need, walls clenching around nothing
âPoor thing, so desperate.â He slides a finger through your folds, gathering your slick.
âN-need it please.â You squirm below him, already worked up from your own touch.
âI know.â He slides a finger in, your jaw goes slack in pleasure. He pumps it agonizingly slowly, until you're bucking your hips up into him. He takes that as his cue to add a second finger, pumping faster at first, coaxing a strangled moan out of you.
âF-fuck.â You grasp the sheets below you, back arching off the bed, and then he slows his pace, earning a whine from you, but then your eyes screw shut and warmth floods your body. You can feel every inch of his fingers this way, he curls them slightly pressing into your sweet spot. You pant below him.
âJust relax, weâve got all night. Let it feel good.â He guides you, noticing your tensing muscles and your ragged breaths. He doesnât want you to overthink this, or be in your head. He needs you relaxed.
âOhhâ you sit up on your elbows, surprised at the feeling coursing through you, almost wanting it to stop, almost becoming too much. His eyes pin you where you are silently telling you to lay back down, that you can trust him. His thumb finds your clit, swollen and throbbing, rubbing slow, delicate circles until your moans fall out uncontrollably.
âI think I,â you gasp, clenching around him. He nods at you, as if giving your permission. Your orgasm courses through you, through every inch of your body, beginning with a familiar heat in your lower abdomen, branching off, sparking every nerve in your body. Itâs intense and seemingly never ending as aftershocks rumble through you, nothing like youâve ever had before. He doesnât stop, curling his fingers ever so slightly, his thrusts are harder now but he removes the thumb on your clit, not wanting to overstimulate you.
âWhat are you-â you feel another climax building, but this one is different, thereâs a pressure somewhere lower. Itâs foreign, you again wonder if itâs too much.
âItâs okay, just trust me.â He nods, kissing your neck, biting into your shoulder. Suddenly a cry erupts from your throat as the pressure releases when he circled your clit again, faster and harder than before. Your screams are then muffled into his hand as you write beneath him. He pulls away this time, satisfied with two orgasms from you. When you finally come down, you lean up on your elbows to look at him, sitting on the foot of your bed, rubbing your quivering legs with a soothing hand.
You're in shock at the mess below you, your bedsheets drenched, his clothes soaked, your wide eyes meet his, crinkled in a satisfied smile.
âHow the hell did you do that?â You sit up fully.
âI just pay attention.â He shrugs. He rises to his feet, hand snaking behind your neck to pull you towards him, planting a kiss to your forehead. He looks at your lips for a moment, his entire being urging him to kiss you but he doesnât let himself. He steps out leaving you to catch your breath.
âWanna watch a movie?â He offers walking back in with a glass of water. Your brows knit in confusion.
âWait, what about you?â You stand up on shaking legs.
âNext time.â He tilts his head. You want to prod him, ask if heâs sure he doesnât want anything from you in return. Youâre a little dejected at first but when he lets you lean into him on the couch youâre oddly comforted by his ability to just carry on as normal, like he wasnât just rock hard at watching you getting off. I mean what kind of guy just gets you off and then expects nothing in return? It was a stark contrast from what you were used to, maybe thatâs why he did it. He wanted to prove to you that he was better than them. Maybe youâd let him kiss you then.
Next time turned out to be the very next night, he had pounded into you until you couldnât form a coherent thought. A few days later he ate you out in the shower, you would suck him off on nights you were too tired for sex, he would fuck you before you left for work in the mornings. It was unbelievably good, you came every time, usually multiple times. And it was convenient, you both got your needs met in friendship and in sex. So why was there a twisting of your gut when you saw him in the elevator one day with a woman, your new neighbor. In reality he hadnât given her a second thought, but you were fighting a battle internally trying to will your jealousy away.
âIâm going out with a friend tonight, donât wait up.â You clasp your earrings and smooth away a few strands of hair, putting the final touches on your makeup.
âHave fun.â He spooks you, standing behind you in the mirror, eyes boring into yours. You give him a small smile as he walks away.
At the bar you honestly try your best, but you canât even bring yourself to smile at some of the men your friend is trying to set you up with. Theyâd buy you a drink and give up five minutes into conversation with you when all your responses were dry and short, laced with the impression that you didnât want to be here. They were right, you didnât want to be here, Driver had ruined all other men for you, you wanted nothing more than to be fucked into the mattress with his cock buried inside of you. Your cheeks heat up at the thought alone. You tell your friend you're going to step outside. You sit on a bench outside the bar, watching as a few cars drive by the street.
It wasnât long before you started to feel guilty, you had agreed to a no strings attached roommates-with-benifits situation with him, only to what? Fall in love with him? Itâs his fault really, for being too good at this, for being too kind to you. You felt like a stay cat, he had fed you once and now youâd be forever crawling onto his doorstep in the night, begging for more.
Unbeknownst to you, Driver had followed you, sitting in a parking space outside the bar, headlights off, waiting and watching through the window, just wanting to be close to you. Selfishly he wanted to see if you spoke to anyone else, maybe leaned into them, touched their shoulder, flirted with them in soft whispers. He was relieved when you didnât. He sank down in the seat when you stepped out, sitting on the bench with a defeated sigh, he watched for a moment, trying to analyze your expression for any clues as to what youâre thinking. Before he could talk himself out of it he found he was getting out of the car, walking towards you.
âWanna get outta here?â He holds out a hand. You jump, letting out a breath in relief when you realize it was him. Youâre not just relieved, the ache in your chest is alleviated, the gnawing sensation in your gut telling you to go home is gone, because you didnât just want to go home, you wanted him. You were so fucked.
âWhat are you doing here?â You ask, taking his hand as he walks you to his car. He doesnât answer, only opening his passenger door for you to slide in. When he gets in on the other side he looks down at his lap, one hand on the steering wheel, the other tapping against his thigh.
âHey,â you lean closer, urging him to look at you, when he does you regret it, his expression is almost pained, eyes glistening under the streetlight and full of emotion. You understand him in that moment, or at least youâre ninety percent sure you do, because you probably have the same pained expression, being hopelessly in love with him, desperate for him.
âKiss me.â You whisper, voice shaking.
âWhat?â He freezes.
âKiss me,â you repeat, less shaken.
âWhat about your rule?â He counters, wanting to ensure youâre positive before he crosses the point of no return.
âI already broke it.â You confess, eyes flitting between his lips and his eyes.
âHow so?â He prods, needing to hear the words.
âI love you.â You breathe.
âThat so?â He teases, finally turning toward you to cup your jaw. You nod. He doesnât speak, canât wait another second. He poured every unspoken word into the kiss, holding you like you may slip through his fingers at any second.
âI love you too baby.â He rasps into the kiss. Your hand tugs at the hair above his neck, pulling him impossibly closer to you. He moans into your mouth, leaning back in his seat and pulling your leg over his lap to straddle him in the driver's seat. Itâs a little cramped but neither of you have the strength to hold off. You grind yourself into the bulge tenting his pants, he was nearly fully hard just from kissing you. You whine at the friction as he grinds back up into you, gripping your hips forcing you down onto him.
âBackseat, now.â He mutters. You climb into the back, as he practically falls over the seat following you.
He pushes your skirt up, sliding your panties to the side, slipping a finger in with no resistance, mouth still on yours, moaning at the feeling of you clenching around him.
âNo, need you now,â you grab his face when he tries to break away, moving downward. He nods undoing his belt and freeing himself from the constriction of his pants.
âMmmfuck,â you moan into another kiss, as he gasps, sliding himself inside you fully, all at one. His thrusts are slow and hard, just the way heâs learned you like them. His heart swells with pride at the noises falling from you, the noises only he can draw from you. Your back arches, pushing yourself into him with a moan.
âThatâs it baby, just like that, Iâve got you, youâre mine baby, all mine.â He mumbles in between kisses.
When he snakes a hand down your body to your clit, the tension snaps, orgasm pulsing through you, intensified with the new feeling surrounding your relationship. He follows shortly after you, cum and slick oozing out of you. He kisses your forehead sweetly, whispering praises as he pulls out.
âShit,â his eyes wide at the realization that he forgot a condom.
âItâs okay,â you brush him off, as if reading his mind.
âIâm on the pill.â You assure him, lacing your fingers with his, catching your breath in the backseat.
He zips himself up leaning over the front seat to get some tissues from the glove box, those being the best option for now, given you just had to have sex in the car like a couple of teenagers. You clean yourself up as best you can, stuffing the used tissue in your purse pocket to dispose of later.
When you're done heâs standing outside your door, hand outstretched to steadily guide you back to the front seat. Such a gentleman.
âCan I take you home?â He smirks at you.
âIâd love it if you would.â You peck his lips, getting in the car.
You were absolutely ruined, as was he, and heâd spend as long as youâd let him, continuing to ruin you, lovingly of course.

âKarin, I couldnât ask this of anyone. Itâs too much.â Youâre sitting at the dining tableâand sheâs at the stove, stirring a pinch of salt into a big silver pot; sheâs trying to make you an easy lunchârigatoni, bolognese⌠You donât know what train of thought carries her to ask if youâd like to move-in. Sheâs been like this since youâd met in your early twenties, offering the most and expecting the least back. Of course, you had told her you were in a bit of a bind at your old job, only a month left to your contract at a local library in the city.
âDo you have any idea how much I owe you? Come onâitâll be a month or so tops, before you get back on your feet.â Karinâs pacing back and forth in front of you now. Youâre thankful that her much more pragmatic husband is caring for the baby upstairs. âWe would love to host you, and we miss youâGus and I.â
âI came here to ask you about the openings at the school district, and youâre offering for me to crash at your house. With the two of you and your one-year-old.âÂ
âAnd Gusâ little brother.â How could you forget Lars? Youâd met him the one time at Karinâs baby shower, a small party in the middle of Spring with clothespin games and the chocolate-loaded diapers. Youâd gone through a big effort to invest in a nice automated bottle washer off Karinâs registry, which she ended up adoring. And while you were bringing in the heavy, paper-wrapped box, Lars was quick to help. Gus had a foldable table set up with a white lace topper, already decorated with a generous pile of diaper packs, bottles, toys. You werenât so sure where your gift atop the preexisting haul. Lars had taken it off your hands like it weighed just a pound, placed it carefully front and center amidst the rest of the gifts. A big gift like that deserves to have a spotlight. You thought, rightfully so, that he was the sweetest-looking guy youâd ever laid eyes on.
Last you heard from Karin, his girlfriend had passed awayâBianca, the sex-doll turned town treasure. You didnât know Lars well, but thereâd been a dull ache in your chest when she called to tell you she and Gus had spent a few solid hours in the hospital sleep-deprived, and Lars was devastated. You grieved for him, the stranger that he was.
Karinâs still beaming. âItâs perfect. The crib is in our room, and Lars is in the pink room. The garage is still set up like a studio, minus Gusâ workout gear, but it really is a nice setup. And if youâre staying with us, I could talk with the front-desk ladies at the elementary school, see if they have room for you.â You can already see it in her eyes; sheâs formulating plans for you in her headâwhen sheâs going to get you newer sheets, the best restaurants to take you to in town.Â
Most important of all, though she wonât say it to you until you move in, youâre going to make a very good Plan-C babysitter. After all, you are one of two godparents. Karin made sure you knew that at the baby shower, too. You and Lars are the backups. The thought of that kills you, too. Your hands come up to rub your eyes, trying to take in the offer in totality. Is even this a good idea? Karinâs painting it out to be, but sheâs also got a bit of a plague-like optimism about her. âI donât know, Karin. You should probably have a deeper conversation with Gus about this kind of thingââ
âOh, for Godâs sake, would you just say yes?â Karin cries out. Sheâs grabbing for mitts to pick up the large pot of pasta. âItâs not like we havenât all roomed together before, and this house is way bigger than our old apartment.â Karin sleeves the mitts over her hands, before picking the pot off the red-hot burners. Once sheâs pouring it out into a strainer in the sink, you can see her peer at you over her shoulder. The steam rises up out of the metal basin in wisps past her short, brown hair. âWonât you just accept the favor and move in for a little while?â
âKarin Lindstrom, you are an unconventionally kind person,â you start. She tosses the pasta from the strainer back into the emptied pot, before whipping around to get a good look at you. âIâll live with you, okay? You win.â
Karin squeals with delight, throwing her mitts onto the counter and jumping to give you a clambering hug. Sheâs squeezing your shoulders so tightly you think you might bruise. You can hear a handful of loud footsteps, creaking along the ceiling over your heads. She doesnât pay it any mind, so you decide not to either. That is, until Gus comes stepping down the staircase. His voice is stuck between this delicate balance between whispering and shouting. âHon, is there a fire? Whatâs going on?â
Bless his soul. He has a little blankie over his left shoulder, and the same thick, stern brow as usual. Little Elinor Bianca is tucked to his chest, bleary eyed. They named her after Gus and Larsâ mother and Larsâ girlfriend who youâd known for such a short time. She looks, really, so much like Karin. Especially her eyes. You can hardly believe itâyour old friends as fully-functional parents. Gus is trying to cradle her soft despite the quick burst of movement. You really donât remember him looking so fatherly.
Karin lowers her voice into the same, quieter shout. âItâs going to be just like college all over again!â She pulls away from you to take your hands into her own. Her thin, warm fingers wrap around your palms. It doesnât seem so outrageous to Gus, seeing as heâs giving you a tight-lipped smile and letting his shoulders relax. Not a fire.
âI was telling Karin it might be best if you both agree on this. Iâm not trying to move in on a whim,â you try to tell Gus, ladened with sheepishness.
Heâs already jumping back up the stairs, to return to that critical process of putting baby Beth down for her nap in the crib upstairs. âYou wonât hear me complaining,â he murmurs, halfway up the staircase, âIt takes a village.â
â
Both you and Karin talk through the rest of the afternoon about your move-in. You still have to get your affairs in orderâclose up your current sublease, pack your things into a reasonable amount of moving boxes, ship over to the small town Karin now calls home. In the meantime, she thinks itâs best for you all to have one of those Lindstrom family dinners (these happen every other week, she assures you), so the four of you can chat it over. They still have to run it through Lars, which she assures you should be fine. And now, Karin has you worrying over the mushroom risotto, wondering if you shouldâve told her ânoâ more stubbornly. Youâre not necessarily high-wired, but you do think itâs a little intrusive to start living out in the garage. It means youâre going to be around a lot more often.
You can feel your shoulders tense at the sound of tires rolling over the dirt road outside a couple good hours later; the grating sound floats in through the kitchen window, and makes your grip on the wooden spoon stutter slightly. Karin jumps into action, while youâre feeling yourself sweat. âOh! Heâs here, heâs here! One secââ She jogs over to the back door, opening it on its rickety hinges and watching as Lars gets out of his low-to-the-ground Toyota. Heâs bundled in a beanie and a puffer, briefcase held tight in his hand. Karin shouts, âLars! I just took the chicken out of the oven, and the tableâs all set.â
He seems to squint at her from across the yard, just over the hood of his car, letting out a soft, ragged breath. The far-and-wide announcement is a little more ostentatious than heâd like it to be. He approaches in wide steps, snatching his beanie off his head and running his hand through his slicked hair, tidying it as best as he can. Karin, watching him with soft eyes, seems to be nearly buzzing with excitement seeing him approach the back porch. You crack a soft, shy grin. âLars! We metââ
ââat the baby shower. I remember.â He brings his mitted hand up in front of you, and you have to take a quick moment of confusion and recovery to shake it. Heâs still warmed up, having been tucked into the car for the entirety of the ride back, heater fighting to stay on amidst the evening chill. So, Lars remembers you. You donât know why you thought he wouldnât. He has a grin playing softly on his face, eyes blinking as he looks down to your shoes. âYouâre a librarian in the city.â
âWell,â you purse your lips, âUntil the end of next month.â You did really like this job, rolling your book rack down the aisles and seeing who was checking out what. Bummer to lose a gig like that.
âWhich is why weâre having dinner tonight,â Karin says, tugging you aside by the sleeve of your sweater so Lars can shuffle inside past the both of you. You can feel your back brush against the wall of the entryway just slightly, straightening out your back.
You feel a bit flushed seeing how Lars shuffles through the threshold of the door, shoulder nearly brushing with your chest. Youâd forgotten how tall and how burly he was at the baby showerâand right now, he seems to tower over you. Youâre trying your best to keep a steady smile, but youâre becoming acutely aware that youâre still quite attracted to him. Gusâ brother. Karinâs brother-in-law. You have to remind yourself two or three times over just looking at him. Itâs just too close. You wish he was a stranger.
Lars peeks up the staircase, then down at you. You have to swallow down that flustered feeling you get when he turns his gaze down to you, his well-kept mustache curving as he shoots you a few blinks and a polite smile. âItâs poor management,â he assures you, âTheir loss.â You nod shyly, trying your best to peel your gaze away from him and towards the open front door. Karinâs still holding it open, letting in the draftâjust staring at you both. She seems to shut it in a hurry, before shooing you both towards the dining room. She makes the both of you sit down while she calls for Gus to bring baby Elinor downstairs.
So, all five of you are sitting at the table. The high-chair is right between Karin and Gus at the head of the table, and you and Lars are placed conveniently across from one another. They seem to fall into the usual motionsâGus is making miniature portions for his daughter from each of the serving plates, using a small, plastic spoon to scoop it into Elinorâs bowl. Karin serves Gusâ plate, and then her own. Thereâs a small exchange between Karin and Lars in passing serving bowls. You only realize a moment or so later that Lars is looking down at your plate.
âPotatoes?â he murmurs. You let yourself glance over at Karin and Gus, who are still well-occupied by the baby and their own plates. You offer Lars a polite, âYes, please.â He hurries to finish scooping his own portion onto the ceramic plate in front of him, before reaching to offer the bowl over to you.
âSo, I wouldâve called you earlier, Lars, but I know you had that busy day today at the office,â Karin eases in. âWeâre wondering if youâd mind a new addition to the house.â
Larsâ eyebrows seem to raise incredulously. He lets out a hushed whisper to Karin, âYouâre pregnant?â Gus nearly flubs the tiny baby-spoon in his hands, Elinor babbling mindlessly as her father lets out a loud and unabashed snort. Karinâs just about to protest, when you let out a soft, attention-calling cough.
âThey want me to move in,â you wince, taking the bowl of mashed potatoes off of his hands. Youâre hovering it awkwardly over your own plate now, a little too anxious to pull the spoon out and start serving yourself. Lars is quiet. Youâre trying to gauge the kind of reaction heâs having to the proposition, and heâs not giving much.
âIn the garage?â he asks, attention pulled to Karin and Gus. âWe should buy a couple fresh blankets. Maybe a heater.â So, itâs a yes. Lars is completely fine with you moving inâeven hospitable about the whole ordeal. Thereâs something sort of endearing about his lack of a solid âyes.â To Lars, it goes without question. Already, he seems to be going through the mental math of getting you settled in.
But you have to protest: âNo! I meanâyou donât have to go buying anything nice. I have a lot of sweaters in my place that Iâll bring over. The heaterâs overkill.â
âWell, heâs kinda right. I can probably drive out to the hardware store in town. They sell them for cheap,â Gus admits, taking another generous scoop of pea-mush and floating it towards Elinorâs mouth. Karin gives him a firm nod of agreement, arms crossed over the table. You could practically melt at how sweet all three of them are about the whole move-in. Finally, you can carry out those gentle motions of serving your own plate, eyes softened as you stare down at the pretty lace trim of your placemat, the stark-white of the glossy plate placed above it. It might not be so bad with the Lindstroms.
â
You wouldnât have expected for Lars to call off sick on your move-in day. But somehow, while youâre pulling up to the driveway after that long drive from the cityâheâs there. With a creme-gridded flannel and a pair of black work boots. You swear under your breath at the sight. You pull slowly into the driveway, braking right beside him. As soon as youâre out of the car, Lars is shifting his weight from one foot to the other. âKarin, Gus, and Elinor are at the supermarket. Buying for a big dinner,â he tells you, âProbably not the welcoming band you were wanting.â
âNo, this is perfect! Iâd rather move the stuff when itâs quieter, anyways. Less of a bother.â You round your car, clicking the little latch-button on your trunk and pulling up the lid. Inside the back, thereâs a generous lot of your belongings packed into moving boxes and luggage bags. He sweeps up one of your bigger boxes with one arm. âOh, Lars, you donâtââ
âI wanna. Youâre a guest,â Lars says, adjusting the cardboard underneath his arm. Then, he digs into the front pocket of his puffer and drops a keyring into your hand. âGold is for the garage, silverâs for the house.â Before you know it, heâs grabbing your suitcase, tooâand nodding for you to walk ahead of him down the driveway.
He lets you unlock the door for the both of you. It takes a lot of effort for you not to fumble with the keys. You can hear Lars shuffling in slowly behind you, then peeling off to place your box and luggage down in the corner. As soon as he straightens back up, heâs already turning towards the door. Lars mumbles, âIâll be back.â He doesnât wait for an answer from you, just pivots on the soles of his boots and walks out of the garage. You peek with a tilted head outside the door. Heâs already jogging back out to the trunk again.
You explore the place on your own while he takes in your things from the car. Heâs having minimal trouble lifting everything and stacking it up in the corner. It makes you bashful; youâd struggled even bringing them out the door of your old place. The garage is stocked with everything you could needâlaid out similarly to a studio youâd see being leased in the city. Thereâs a small dining table with a sixties, diner-style metal rimâtwo chairs to match. A kitchenette and a small bathroom. A twin-bed in the corner. You can picture Lars hereâand even feel that thereâs a lingering aroma of oak and cinnamon clinging to corners of the studio. It used to be his.
He comes in with your last two boxes stacked one atop the other, placing them carefully atop the kitchen counters. âThe sheets are new,â Lars points. âKarin told me youâd like the color.â You do, though youâd also take literally anything they offered to you. âEverything should be set up fine. Only thingâs the bathroom. If the water doesnât get hot, just give me a call. With the pipes, itâsââ Iffy, he wants to say.
You shoot out a soft âokay,â hands wringing together. You donât mean to cut him off, but Lars is really chipping away at your ability to keep cool. The thought of Lars kneeling down with a wrench and working away at the bathroom pipes sends a tight feeling to your abdomen.
Lars grabs for the knob of the front door, eyes crinkling. âIâm gonna go. You probably want to settle in.â
âOh. Thanks,â you murmur. You have to make up for your silence. âThank you, Lars. Really,â you say again, more earnestly. Though you keep your hands glued to your sides, you can feel yourself pushing down that unforgivable desire to squeeze his hand. He gives you a curt nod, before making his way out. He makes sure to shut the door as gently as he can behind him; you can hardly hear it click closed. Past the translucent film of the white curtains, you can see Lars hurrying across the yard and into the house, boots plodding against the short grass. You have to pinch yourself for letting your lips quirk up into a smile.
â
Youâre grateful for the way Karin has fought to get you an entry-level desk job. A little higher than minimum wage, generally simple. You answer the sick calls, sort the staff mail. What you arenât so keen on is Karinâs idea of getting you acquainted with the rest of the school staff. The very-small PTA has a bake sale going on in the evening. So, the Lindstroms have to attendâfor your sake.
The gymnasium has been fitted with a few rows of tables, identical black tablecloths laid out over the top. Itâs a good mix of staff who youâve only shaken the hands of once or twice, more who youâve never even seen before, and the families of current students. All across the gym, thereâs a good mix of baked goods. Gus is acting like heâs struck gold, and in the meantime, Karin has swept you away and started parading you around the room.
It seems a little targeted the way she walks you over to this particular corner of the bake sale, where thereâs a taller guy around your age, dressed in a windbreaker and joggers. You already donât like the look of it as-is. âCoach T,â Karin says, hand hovering over his right shoulder. âTravis. Sorryâwe are off the clock. This is my best friend from college.â She murmurs your name to him, and you have to fight the urge to roll your eyes. Itâs a setup, clearly. This Coach Travis takes your hand quickly into his own with one tight-squeeze. You can barely call it a handshake.
âYouâre at the desk, right? Think I saw Lynn teaching you how to pick up the phones,â he nods. Polite, you remind yourself, be polite. Karinâs watching you with a tight, toothy grin on her face. So, maybe you wouldâve liked this Travis guy in college, when you were nineteen. Sheâs not wrong in that sense, but youâre not exactly nineteen anymore. Now, he lacks appeal and youâre utterly bored being dragged through the small talk. You stick to it only for Karinâ sakeâthough you need to make sure she doesnât hear the end of it later.
What you do find your mind drifting to is Lars. Sweet, attentive Lars who youâve sometimes seen peeking towards the garage from the kitchen windows before ducking behind the frame. Lars, who always seems to want to serve you at those Lindstrom family dinners. And Lars, whoâs across the gymnasium now, rolling little Elinor back and forth while Gus buys a couple of saran wrapped brownies. He seems to be zeroed in on your conversationâonly looking away when you try to give him a little wave from the side.
Lars murmurs a couple words to Gus, before wheeling up to the three of you, stroller handles still clutched. You can see his eyebrows knit together, all pensive and brooding. Karin chuckles. âYou remember my brother-in-law Lars?â
âOf course,â Travis leans down. âAnd this is Elinor, obviously. Just adorable.â Karin is about to give him another little laugh when she sees Gus flagging her down on the other side of the gym. Heâs holding a couple of cookies now, balanced in one hand, and brownies in the other. Clearly indecisive.
âJeez. Iâll be back,â she huffs to youâbarely Lars and Travisâbefore making it over to her husband in a hurry. With just the three of you, thereâs a little bit of a stall in the conversation. You can tell this elementary school PE teacher wants to talk to you, but thereâs still Lars and Elinor babbling in her seat. You donât think youâve ever seen Lars so effervescently annoyed. Heâs deadpanned just looking at Travis, on the near-verge of sizing him up. He picks up Elinor with both of his hands, bringing her into a soft cradle just over his shoulder. She cooes softly. All the while, youâre trying to keep a normal stream of thought about how stern he looks. Lars shrugs with his free shoulder. âWeâre the godparents.â
You canât swallow up that heat coming off your face. Travis nods, âOh. Thatâs⌠cool, man.â It couldnât get any worse than this. We. As in you and Lars. It almost sounds like you should be partnered upâa whole married couple waiting in line to care for this baby girl. That concept alone threatens to send you into a downward spiral. You try to let out an obligatory laugh, but it comes out more like a gentle wheeze.
â
After a good couple months living out in the garage, this is the very first time youâve had to look over baby Elinor. Karin and Gus have this elaborate date night planned out for the both of themâsomething about a candlelit dinner and a splurge on some wine tasting. It leaves you and Lars in charge, which should be okay considering the circumstances. Youâre essentially roommates. Youâd like to call him a friend. After the way he spoke to that PE teacher at the bake sale, all pouty and inflexible, youâre not sure how to pin down the relationship. Odd, for starters.
This sounds more appropriate: youâre a couple of godparents babysitting. While your friends take a little evening out for some quality time, you donât mind hanging out in the living room. While youâre seated on the floor with her on one end of the couch, Lars sits on the other. Elinor is grabbing at your finger and squeezing nightly around the nail of your index finger. Sheâs absolutely adorable.
She also has the grip of an infant. The second you seem a little bit dismayed by the way Elinor is holding onto you, Lars is taking up one of her plush rabbits and sweeping one of its paws softly over her nose. Elinor giggles. Itâs a good enough distraction for her to let go of your pointer and surrender her attention over to Lars. You let out a quiet sigh and Lars is still very focused on putting on a good puppet show with the stuffed animal. Elinorâs big, brown eyes wonder at the sight of the rabbit doing what appears to be an Irish jig on the cushions of the couch.
While she squirms in your lap watching the performance, youâve got a trained eye on Larsâ canines. Heâs got a shy smileâone thatâd maybe be wider if it were just him and the baby. You lift Elinor up and join Lars on the couch, seating her on your lap. Sheâs still trying to reach for that plush rabbit. âYouâre really good with her, you know. Youâre careful.â
Larsâ hold on the stuffed animalâs arms loosens and tightens up again. âThank you.â You want to tell him that you think heâd be a good dad, but for fear of saying too much, you settle for a well-mannered, âYouâre welcome.â
You have to apologize mentally to Karin and Gus for thinking what you are now. That you could picture yourself beyond the play-pretend of this living roomâhow itâd be to live in a house with Lars. To wear wedding bands. To have a newborn, a bunch of toys, a house. Itâs not difficult for you to picture. He looks perfect on the couch in his button-up and patterned sweater, pulling Elinor off your lap politely and cradling her with a gentle support to the back of her head. What really makes you flushed is how heâs making Elinor look ten times tinier by comparison; itâs just so cute.
âI think sheâs hungry,â Lars murmurs under his breath. He doesnât happen to notice the dazed look his words shake you out ofâattention trained down only on the baby.
âI can go cut her up some of those strawberries from the farmerâs market. Maybe a little bit of cereal,â you ponder. Youâd seen Karin settle on that combination of snacks before. While Elinor isnât a picky eater, you think sheâll probably enjoy it the most. Sheâs gibbering away as you get up off the couch and, padding across the wood floors, you hear Lars go, âYouâre good, too.â
You give him a quick smile, before turning on your heels and making your way to the kitchen. Through the doorway, you can see him thud his balled hand onto his forehead. Elinor plants one of her small hands on the wool fabric over his chest, and he cooes quietly, âWell, I didnât know what to say.â You dip your head down grabbing the box of fresh strawberries from the fridge, trying to wipe the grin off your face.
â
Youâre just about to sneak into the main house with a basket of laundry when the two of you come face-to-face on the opposite sides of the back door. Lars is looking at you through the window, looking down at you with wide eyes. You take one step down. He holds the door open, stepping aside so you can shuffle inside. Once again, that sensation of his chest brushing up against your arm makes your stomach flip. âI was about to go for a walk,â Lars says to you.
You stammer, âIâll, uh, leave you to it.â You know youâve got to heave this laundry down into the basement where the washer and dryer reside. Itâs going to be a pain, and Lars is still watching you with his hands stuffed in the front pockets of his puffer.
Heâs taking his time, you think, in asking if youâd like to accompany him. Finally, he takes his gloved hands out of his pockets and tilts his head. With hands gripped at his sides, he asks, âYou couldâ?â
âYeah,â you nod briskly, placing your laundry basket down at your side. âOkay. I could use a little outdoors.â
A softened grin peeks onto his face. âI thought you would be at the school all day,â Lars tells you. âThereâs Little League in the evening.â
âIâd rather walk with you,â you admit. You donât much care for baseball right now. At least, not the baseball going on down at the elementary school. Lars smiles, waiting for you to deposit your laundry into the washer and set it up before joining him out on the back porch.
The walk is short and sweetâa little bumpy. Lars is humming some oldies jazz song as the two of you descend down the path. You swear you can see his hands flinch upwards the second you stumble over a braided lock of branches. You only give him a breathy laugh, which youâre pleased to see gets returned with one of Larsâ own. It isnât often that you get to see him laugh like that. You want more of it, you think.
When you arrive at the lakeside, Lars is unzipping his puffer jacket and laying it down neatly on the ground in front of you. He blinks tight, waiting patiently for you to sit down. Though youâre tempted to insist that you don't mind sitting on the ground, Lars seems really keen on covering it up for you. You crouch down soft and lean back onto the puffer with a murmured âthanks.â Lars plants himself down beside you.
The sun wonât be down for at least an hour, and thereâs a quiet perfection to the way the sun blurs over the lakewater. Itâs always slightly overcast in town, but out here, itâs nicer than usual. Cleared-up. Lars winces, slightly, hands curling together on his lap. You can see the wisp of warm air billowing out of his mouth against the cold. âI havenât been here sinceâŚâ
âBianca?â His eyes look a little glossy, but Lars still smiles. Yes, Bianca. God rest her soul. âItâs a really nice spot.â
âI used to watch Gus make mudpies here. In the summer, heâd mix it all up with a branch, and feed them to his GI Joes,â Lars says, gloved hand pointing over to some larger shrubs by the water. You grimace at the thought of those old, plastic soldiers face-down in the wet soil.
You murmur, âThatâs kinda gross.âÂ
âYeah. It was,â he shrugs, looking down at the grass between you both. Itâs dry and crisp, green blades leaned to one wind-brushed side. He reaches one hand to pull at the puffer below you, adjusting it neater at the corners.
âAnd youâŚ?â You canât picture Lars acting along with his brother. Heâd play gentler, kinder.
âWatched the water. I liked to imagine I was fishing, but we werenât allowed to touch the gear. Anyways, there were only ever minnows. Maybe a turtle, onceâŚâ Lars pulls at the ties of his boots, next. You tilt your head at Lars, trying to picture him with that younger version of Gus. Two boys on the lakeside, Larsâ brownish-blonde hair against his older brotherâs pitch black. You've seen pictures before; he resembles his mother more. âNow,â he says, âI come here if the house gets a little bit loud.â
âA lot, then?â you wonder.
âItâs a good loud,â Lars smiles. Heâd never think to speak against little Elinor or Karin or his brother, but you know thereâs an inkling of truth to your suggestion. Youâd deduced it easily within that evening of your first visit, and all those glimpses in the house afterwards. Itâs no dig to anyone, just the way of the world.
You donât know how long the two of you sit there, staring at the water ripple out in motion with the breeze. Thisâbeing outside, near the waterâis an ideal source of calm. Thereâs so little expectation to it all. You, him, and the view. Itâs dream-like. Youâre not exactly sure how you end up kissing Lars in that gap of time. If he leans in, or you do. Youâre simply aware of the fact that youâre leaned far too close together, and that your lips slide gently against one another in a soft peck. Itâs over before you can even process itâhands cupped over your mouth with a gasp. âOh, Iâm sorry, Lars!âÂ
Once youâve started apologizing, you canât stop. It comes out in a ranted and unending string. You know touch isnât his favorite thing in the world, that it hurts. And now, youâre wracked with the terrible guilt that youâve overstepped. His soft cheeks are burning a bright pink, seeming nearly startled by your outburst.
âNo, no. It was good,â he starts. Then, a whispered correction: ââgreat.â You watch as Lars scruffs his gloved hand over the back of his neck. âCould you do it again?âÂ
Suddenly, your apologies catch in your throat. You have to slow down for a minute, try to make sense of Larsâ request. âI donât⌠you want me to?â you clarify. Itâs really quite the opposite of what youâd expect from him. Still, he looks at you with his brows knitted together and his eyes fixed down at your lips.
âWould you let meâŚ?â Lards tugs his wool gloves off his hands and stuffs them gently into his back pocket. Then, Lars reaches both of his hands out tentatively, fingers coming up to cup your jaw. He moves at his own speed, and you find your eyes fluttering closed with his touch. The second his lips come up against yours, youâre inhaling that woody scent raising off his knit sweater. His mustache tickles at your upper lip. You can hear the gentle laps of the lake, the beating of swallowsâ wings far off on the other end. And itâs quiet. Itâs the kind of calm that you couldâve only dreamed of experiencing when you were living in your apartment in the city. And youâre there together.
Youâre taken out of the second he pulls back, a quiet, satisfied hum rising from his throat. Lars places a few polite pats on your knee, before drawing back and resting his elbows on his tucked-up knees. You do the same, face still flushed and lips slightly swollen from the way Lars just tried to snog you. You donât know how he can be so at ease after a kiss like that; he practically sucked your breath out of your chest, and now heâs taking in the scenery.
âI want Elinor to take the pink room. Sheâs gonna get bigger soon,â Lars says. âTold Gus and Karin Iâd move back into the garage.â
âSo, weâre gonna cram in there together?â you chuckle softly. Itâs roomy, sure, but you donât think itâs roomy enough. And you wonât be working at that small town elementary school forever.
Lars blinks. âSure. Or⌠wherever.â Itâs an easy insinuation to make. Heâll move out, maybe even follow you wherever you end up heading next. The thought of him being around indefinitely makes your chest tighten. A good, slow life with Lars is more than you could ask for. You stick your hand out for him to take; ungloved, his big hand wraps around your ownâsoft palms warming up your fingertips.
Songs like we'll never have sex and Pink in the night are so deeply Lars coded to me. Lars has such this longing for someone to be there for him and love him, but when an opportunity for a relationship to happen (like when margo first starts working at the office), he ignores her. I see this as him wanting and yearning for someone to truly love him, yet never having someone like that ever in his life. This has caused the thought of someone feeling that way being so overwhelming, turning into immense guilt and fear within Lars, and these songs just ooze that feeling to me.
