PARIS: The feted star of an internationally-acclaimed film, Afghan actress Marina Golbahari and her husband have been chased from their home to the brink of suicide in a filthy French asylum shelter after she was photographed without a veil.

Fearful for their lives, the couple has kept a low profile since their arrival just over five months ago for a film festival.

“We never thought of staying,” said Azizi. “We hardly packed anything.”

But death threats back home to them and their family, they said, ruled out a return.

Golbahari was only 10-years-old in late 2001 when she was plucked from the streets of Kabul and thrust to stardom as the heroine in the Golden Globe-winning film “Osama”.

She had been selling magazines on the streets of the capital and had witnessed the violence of the recently-toppled Taliban regime first hand when her father was beaten in front of her.

In the film, she played a girl who disguises herself as a boy during the Taliban’s rule so that she can walk freely on the street.

“Osama” was a hit and made Golbahari, now 24, an instant star in her country.

“Cinema is my life,” she told AFP. “In a film, I can say everything about my people.”

Her husband, Noorullah Azizi, also found a way out of grinding poverty through Afghanistan’s burgeoning film industry.

He grew up in Pakistan among the millions of Afghan refugees who had fled the Soviet war of the 1980s.

Now 28, he recalls a childhood spent sleeping under a tent and working in a shoe factory, before returning to Kabul and trying his hand at a thousand and one jobs.

He finally turned to acting, where his muscular physique and square jaw brought him roles as police officers and soldiers fighting the Taliban.

“I was happy. I had everything,” he said.

– ‘She must die’ –

Azizi and Golbahari met on Facebook and quickly fell in love, but the match was not welcomed by Azizi’s family who refused to attend the marriage last September.

“They were ashamed of my wife because she is an actress and the whole world can see her photo,” he said.

It did not take long for more serious trouble to arise.

A picture of Golbahari, head uncovered, at a festival in South Korea drew the ire of conservatives.

The imam in her local village of Kapisa announced that she should not return, which Azizi said translates as: “She must die”.

Soon after, a bomb was thrown into their garden in Kabul but failed to explode. Telephone threats started to pour in, and the couple were forced to move from house to house.

In mid-November, they flew to Nantes in western France where Golbahari was appearing in a festival.

But their families, who had also received death threats, told them they had to stay away.

The couple have found themselves in a decrepit shelter for asylum seekers in Dreux, 90 kilometres (56 miles) outside Paris. Their small green and violet room looks out over a roof full of discarded rubbish.

Golbahari has struggled to cope with the forced exile, attempting suicide and now on anti-depressants.

“I dreamed of living in France, but not like this,” she said.

They are particularly worried about running into fellow Afghans.

“It’s very important that no one recognises Marina,” said Azizi, who locks his wife in the room every time he leaves to make sure no one gets to her and carries out the death sentence passed by conservative imams a world away.

To avoid detection, Golbahari remains tightly veiled in public spaces — a cruel twist in the tale, given the way their nightmare began.

– ‘Always in danger’ –

“When you are an actor or actress in Afghanistan, or part of a film, you are accused of being an infidel, you are always in danger,” said Siddiq Barmak, the director of “Osama” who also became a refugee in France a year ago.

The withdrawal of most international forces from Kabul in mid-2014 brought an end to the protection that had allowed a relative amount of liberal modernity to flourish in Kabul and certain towns. Since then, a wave of religious conservatism has washed over the country — “and not only from the Taliban,” said Barmak.

Nearly 3,700 civilians died in the ongoing conflict last year according to the UN — a record for the past decade. The uptick in violence has sparked a fresh exodus from the country, particularly among Kabul’s middle class liberals.

Back in their dank room, Golbahari sees little light at the end of the tunnel.

It is also fighting against the Kurds but not against Turkey.

Houthis are the Zaydi Shia’s which are allegedly being supported by Iran, whereas the government is backed by Saudi Arabia. Why? Because, Yemen is Saudi Arabia’s backyard and it is said that if Houthi takes control of Yemen they would also take control of the Bab al-Mandab strait, a narrow waterway which links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden; a gateway for the much of the world’s oil shipments.

It is said that now Al Qaeda in Yemen rules a mini-state like ISIL in Syria, from Al Mukalla as its capital and owns looted bank deposits and revenue from country’s third largest port of worth 100 million dollars approximately.

So, how these two crises are linked together? Apparently, Yemen is a thousand miles away from Syria and there is no tangible connection between these two countries. However, there are links. Syria and Yemen enjoyed good relations for most of the time but when a Civil War engulfed Syria in 2012, things changed in Yemen also because of its sectarian composition, presences of AQAP and external factors.

MOSCOW: Russia will form three new military divisions to counter what it believes is the growing strength of The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on Wednesday.

Two of the new divisions will be deployed along Russia’s western border and one along its southern border, Shoigu said in televised remarks. The new divisions will be formed by the end of the year.

Russian media, citing unnamed military sources, said the new divisions would most likely be motorised rifle ones and number around 10,000 soldiers each.

“The Ministry of Defence has adopted a series of measures to counter the growing capacity of NATO forces in close proximity to the Russian borders,” Shoigu said.

Russia’s Western Military District borders Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states and Finland. The Southern Military District borders Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Russia has reacted angrily to NATO’s increased military presence in countries that were once part of the Soviet Union and to military exercises close to its borders.

But its own actions, notably its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014, have sparked anxiety in the region and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania asked the alliance to expand its presence on their soil as a deterrent.

U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said on Monday NATO was weighing rotating four battalions of troops through Eastern member states.

Tensions in the Baltic have risen in recent weeks with Russia scrambling jets to intercept U.S. reconnaissance planes and making simulated attack passes near a U.S. warship.

The gains were strongest in Asia, where markets continued to cheer a stimulus measure Monday by the People’s Bank of China to cut its reserve requirement for banks.

The Shanghai index jumped 4.3 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei index climbed 4.1 percent.

London’s FTSE index fell slightly, but both Paris and Frankfurt notched modest gains ahead of a European Central Bank meeting next week that many expect to result in additional monetary stimulus.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell cited expectations for the ECB move, along with the Chinese central bank’s action Monday as factors that “have combined into an investor-reassuring cocktail, for now at least.”

US stocks were in the red much of the session, but pushed higher after oil prices turned positive. The S&P 500 climbed 0.4 percent, with petroleum-linked stocks leading the way.

“Oil reversed and that still seems the name of the game,” said Mace Blicksilver, director of Marblehead Asset Management.

Other key commodities have also strengthened.

“Oil, copper and iron ore have all stopped going down and that has calmed a few nerves about both economic growth and the banks’ exposure to these industries,” said Russ Mould, investment director at trading firm AJ Bell.

US stocks got additional support from a report Wednesday from payroll firm ADP reported that US private sector businesses added 214,000 jobs in February, better than the 190,000 expected by analysts.

The ADP report came ahead of Friday’s US Department of Labor February jobs report, which analysts expect to show the US economy added 190,000 jobs during the month.

– Bank, commodity shares gain – Commodity-linked shares were strong, with London-listed BHP Billiton rising 5.1 percent, French steel company ArcelorMittal7.6 percent and US aluminum producer Alcoa 5.6 percent.

Banking stocks were another strong group, with Deutsche Bank rising 5.1 percent, HSBC 2.3 percent and Bank of America 2.1 percent.

Agricultural giant Monsanto fell 7.8 percent as it slashed its profit forecast for 2016, citing the effects of the strong dollar, weak commodity prices and a delay in US regulatory approval of the diambic herbicide.

Morningstar analyst Jeffrey Stafford said the weak Monsanto outlook is an indication of the need for greater-than-expected discounting of seeds as farmers endure a downturn that has depressed incomes.

The resolution, which dramatically expands existing sanctions, follows North Korea’s latest nuclear test on Jan. 6 and a Feb. 7 rocket launch that Washington and its allies said used banned ballistic missile technology. Pyongyang said it was a peaceful satellite launch.

U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said the sanctions go further than any U.N. sanctions regime in two decades and aim to cut off funds for North Korea’s nuclear and other banned weapons programs.

All cargo going to and from North Korea must now be inspected and North Korean trade representatives in Syria, Iran and Vietnam are among 16 individuals added to a U.N. blacklist, along with 12 North Korean entities.

Previously states only had to inspect such shipments if they had reasonable grounds to believe they contained illicit goods.

“Virtually all of the DPRK’s (North Korea) resources are channeled into its reckless and relentless pursuit of weapons of mass destruction,” Power told the council after the vote, adding that the cargo inspection provisions are “hugely significant.”

She said the point of the resolution was to target the country’s leadership, not its impoverished people, adding that North Korea is “a master of evasion” and would continue to try to evade the sanctions although the new measures would make that harder.

Western council diplomats said on condition of anonymity that the new resolution brings the North Korean sanctions regime closer to the Iran sanctions regime that they say led to a decision on Tehran’s part to agree to an historic nuclear deal last year that led to most restrictions being lifted in January.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the 15-nation council’s move, saying in a statement that Pyongyang “must return to full compliance with its international obligations.”

North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 because of its four nuclear tests and multiple rocket launches.

After nearly two months of bilateral negotiations that at one point involved U.S. President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, China agreed to support the unusually tough measures intended to persuade its close ally to abandon its atomic weapons program.

China’s Ambassador Liu Jieyi called for a return to dialogue, saying: “Today’s adoption should be a new starting point and a paving stone for political settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.”

However, he reiterated Beijing’s concerns about the possible deployment of an advanced U.S. missile system in South Korea.

“At this moment all parties concerned should avoid actions that will further aggravate tension on the ground,” he said. “China opposes the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system … because such an action harms the strategic and security interests of China and other countries of the region.”

He was referring to the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

There was no immediate reaction from the North Korean U.N. mission. The official North Korean news agency KCNA said on Monday the proposed sanctions were “a wanton infringement on (North Korea’s) sovereignty and grave challenge to it.”

Shortly after the U.N. move, the U.S. Treasury Department said it was blacklisting two entities and 10 individuals for ties to North Korea’s government and its banned weapons programs, and said the State Department was also blacklisting three entities and two individuals for similar reasons.

The new U.N. sanctions close a gap in the U.N. arms embargo on Pyongyang by banning all weapons imports and exports.

The Security Council’s list of explicitly banned luxury goods has been expanded to include luxury watches, aquatic recreational vehicles, snowmobiles worth more than $2,000, lead crystal items and recreational sports equipment.

There is also an unprecedented ban on the transfer to North Korea of any item that could directly contribute to the operational capabilities of its armed forces, such as trucks that could be modified for military purposes.

The new U.N. measures also blacklist 31 ships owned by North Korean shipping firm Ocean Maritime Management Company (OMM).

Added to the U.N. sanctions list was the National Aerospace Development Agency, or NADA, the body responsible for February’s rocket launch.

Newly blacklisted individuals include a senior official in North Korea’s long-range missile program, senior officials at NADA, officials for Tanchon Commercial Bank in Syria and Vietnam, and Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation (KOMID) representatives in Iran and Syria.
