just to preface — illyrian names are, as detailed in my culture post, super nuanced and operate a little differently than in other cultures ! as a little refresher, here’s the name section from that post:

“illyrian names are infamously known for their unconventional length; many are intimidated by them, but breaking them down might help!

the format of a name is usually:

1. [ chosen name; if none, then given name ]

2. [ middle name(s); usually 1–2, can include hyphens and apostrophes, can ( rarely ) be completely omitted ]

3. [ given name; added on if replaced by chosen name, but can also be completely omitted ]

4. [ last name ]

what’s a “chosen name” as opposed to a “given name”, you ask? well, given names are the names parents give to their children initially. a lot of them are unique — as in, often made up by their families based on personal significance or hopes / expectations. there are also often peaks in certain name meanings during specific crises, to the point where some individuals are recognizably part of a particular generation based on their name alone. given names are, in case of the addition of a chosen name, sometimes appended to the end of an individual’s middle names.

chosen names are selected by an individual during a naming ceremony, typically around the age of 15–18, in accordance with the discovery of their gender identity and personal principles. this means their first name may or may not change — it’s up to them to decide, whether it be in the case of the assumption of a different gender identity, a significant connection to a different name, or a significant disconnect from their own.

last names vary greatly, and a lot of them are related to locations, such as the traditional royal family’s name. a large amount of them abide by the addition of a prefix — if a last name changes, a prefix is added to the new name. for example, if the old name starts with an n, the prefix n’ is added. these prefixes aren’t pronounced and are usually not capitalized.

since all these names carry so much individual meaning, you can go visit a specialist who gives you your full name’s meaning, so everyone has a sentence or two that describes them.”

now, as for actual name examples, here are a bit of my favs, mostly names i’ve used in my drs myself or some of the stuff i’ve come up with that i think sounds the nicest ( plus just a few approximate meanings and the names’ approximate pronunciations in ipa, plz don’t crucify me if the ipa makes no sense, i’m only a linguistics nerd and not an expert linguist ) ! ‧₊˚

those were just some examples ! now if you were to take these and make a hypothetical full illyrian name out of them, it might look something like naiem khaillen’lani nayeli-thy laei seravine ^_−☆

btw, these names are also not really or at least not very heavily gendered, as there’s little historical divide between social genders !

( for my dr names personally, i also mix in russian/slavic names for my full name, and i typically have a slavic/non-illyrian last name, because it’s what makes sense for me :3 )

i still see the term illyria being used today among people from the balkans so i'm curious ^^ would it still retain the same etymology as this dr (and somehow be moved all the way east to crimea) or would the name be a result of an unrelated contact between the greeks/romans and the illyrians??

as for my original intention with the name, it wasn’t intended to be related to the cr understanding of illyria — the name was just very beautiful to me and followed the linguistic idea that two “l”s in names are seen as lucky in a way (which i think i mentioned in one of my posts). i don’t think i’ve thought much further into the actual origin/etymology though hehe

it’s a super interesting idea though, to have illyria be part of the roman empire, and would explain some of the culture its adopted that is adjacent to greek/turkic/etc. culture (though my current explanation is just mere geographical proximity). my intention with illyria was to make it super slavic-influenced in nature, since i’m slavic in cr and it’s a culture that is super important to me, hence i made illyria be part of the soviet union, as well as geographically close to russia/kazakhstan/ukraine/all the places i have ties to. another reason for the soviet union thing was to sort of kickstart/foster the political system in the country, since the ussr sort of attempted a socialist system, which is how illyria has operated for years since the official monarchy ended. as for ethnic groups, i’ve always imagined illyrians to be of a mix of central asian and slavic descent, but again, haven’t thought all that deeply into it :P

it’s also worth mentioning that i haven’t really kept all that true to cr geography/history/wtv when conceiving of illyria, especially considering that i basically changed the geographical climate to be more hot in naviana and the surrounding areas (which is a core identifying characteristic of the region) & colder/more true to cr in more northern regions or as you move farther from near naviana. so overall, a lot of my logic in the country’s history or facts surrounding it isn’t easily deducible 😭

so basically, all in all, i initially designed illyria to be adjacent to a lot of slavic countries. its strayed a bit farther since my initial concept, and has gained more influence from greece, turkic countries, arab countries, maybe some desi culture, yada yada. any relation to the cr understanding of illyria is unintentional, and with my current plans surrounding the country, i’d probably most likely just script a different name for cr illyria and have it be mostly historically unrelated — BUT this is subject to change (conservatively) since my history is far from being fully fleshed out and this is certainly a cool idea <3
