THAT'S THE POINT. he is selfish, and that's not a fucking crime. it's a human characteristic. it's the demonizing of normal, regular people emotions that destroys him. the point is that if you take a kid, an average kid, arguably more good-hearted than most if we're being honest, tell him he's the chosen one, separate him from all emotional connections, and shame him for basic humanity, he becomes susceptible to manipulation by the super blatantly obvious evil guy, not just the evil-in-a-different-way religious order. if the people you're trusting and the heroes you look up to tell you that your humanity is actually a dangerous temptation, it creates a deep internal rift. what happened to him could happen to anyone. that's what the point of the prequels was: how does an empire rise? how does a good kid become darth vader? the jedi couldn't just let him be good and leave him alone im storming the temple myself idfc. if anakin skywalker has no fans, i am dead.
