Not zat I am not zankful to not be alone here but… now you are going to die too and you did not ewen do anyzeng.” Pavel sighed, resting his head on his knees as he stared at his dirty boots. Only a few hours prior they’d been happy and safe aboard the Enterprise and now they were down here in this small and dirty prison cell waiting for the first light of the morning so they could be executed. And all because Pavel had been stupid enough to get lost. 

They’d been visiting a planet in the Beta Zauri sector, following a request by the planet’s leaders to inspect and confirm if they were suited to become part of the Federation. The palace where the meeting between the Captain and the planet’s leaders was to be held, had one of the most intricate system of hallways and rooms. Apparently among all the doors the navigator had opened to find the rest of the landing party, one had belonged to a room the aliens considered sacred and that was forbidden for outsiders to see.

Long story short he ended up being dragged away by the security force despite the Captain’s loud protests. But they couldn’t fight their way out of this because of the treaty. And for some reason Caine had insisted that he’d been part of the whole thing and so they ended up in a jail cell together.

The aliens were stunned but hastily clicked a gleeful response, as long as Caine and the by were the representatives and could return for a grand feast before they left the system.

Pavel watched his companion with a bit of surprise and maybe a tiny bit of pride too as he approached the aliens to thank them. He just hoped it was enough to make sure the peace treaty was still going to happen. Though he couldn’t say that he really wanted to return to this place. Not after they gave him the shock of his life in almost executing him! 

Then again, at Starfleet he’d learnt not to harbour grudges, right? And that communication and establishing good relationships with other people was so very important.

At the gentle hands, the soft voice and the slight smile, he sagged down. Wings slowly folded as he took a few breaths and calmed. He nodded once before his eyes cleared completely and he stumbled back a step.

Moments and he could hear the approach, wings folded up hidden behind him. The second he saw the guns - pointed at Pavel too - his wings snapped open, spreading wide to fill the cell and block the path to Pavel.

The inhabitants gasped, recoiling in shock as Caine snarled low, letting instincts take over, his eyes grew dark and animal, his stance shifting to one of aggression. One Pavel would know meant he was moments from snapping on anyone but him.

The inhabitants yelled in their language, scrambling over each other in their haste to throw themselves to the ground and mewling as one scrambled away to find the key to release them.

He was about to tell the other to stop before he got hurt, worry kicking in but from what he could hear, it didn’t sound like the aliens were going to attack them. Pavel hadn’t expected that their captors would be so shocked to see the skyjacker’s wings. He could hear their cries and then the sound of the door being pushed open. 

Relief flooded his body but it was obvious that his companion was still tense, his instincts kicking in to kill those who had tormented them. He’d done it before and he hoped that he would be able to bring him back this time too. “Caine…” Pavel started, gently pushing the wing that was in front of him out of his way until Caine folded it enough to let him through.

Wings. Flight. The portal. He had a few things. Even his shield.

“Explain the creatures to me.” he hoped perhaps he can use something like that to his advantage. If they had wings, flew, something. If not, he had back up plans.

Ze Federation vas not sure if zey should be considered as members because zey behawe a bet too primitiwe for zem. But zey haff dilizium mines and ze Federation would profit greatly from a treaty. Vhich is vhy ze Keptin cannot just come to get us out of here. Zey are humanois so a lot like us, a few more limbs and zey are empazic I zink. Zey dislike sunlight vhich is vhy eet is so dark eweryvhere…”

“Hey! You’re crushing my damn wings!” he barked, but the security refused to let him up. “I swear by the princes blood, I will not kill you if you just let me help fix my broken wing. You don’t know a thing about my kind nor the bio-engineering used in the wings of the Skyjackers.” Caine growled and Leonard hummed in thought.

“Pavel, you stay, you four, leave.” Leonard waved off the security and they hesitated before releasing Caine and swiftly scrambling back, revealing the fact Caine was bare chested, revealing strong muscles and soft scars, an intricate tattoo along his arm and a violent scar, like a brand, on his neck.

The navigator was, for a little moment, captivated by the shirtless alien, eyes immediately following the lines of his tattoo. All the scars made him wonder if they didn’t have dermal regenerators wherever the man was from. Not that they were ugly or anything but it was a rare sight in this age. 

The call had gone out. John wasn’t happy about it, but despite his obvious abilities, even he couldn’t face down a squad of XRNs. He and his partner had had enough trouble with just the one that they took down. But Sandra’s orders didn’t sit well with him. He wouldn’t ever back down from a fight like this. Doing so meant the city would have been overrun.

Then there was the guy being called in. John didn’t like him for his abilities and attitude. He wasn’t going to let that guy have all the glory of keeping the city safe this time. Someone had to buy time, and it might as well have been him and his partner.

John ignored the orders he was given. Other officers would be arriving to keep the crowds back soon. “C’mon. We have to buy them some time.” They could get lucky and the XRNs could have developed a weakness… Yeah, and his name was Nancy. John ran forward, his sidearm appearing in his hand as he fired a few shots at the closes robot rushing toward them.

“John!” Dorian yelled, seeing a machine leaping at John, inches from possibly killing the human-

When a snarl cut through the air like the blue lights trailing the figure, purple shield a flash before it crashed into the XRN unit, throwing her sideways and the Splice skidded to a stop next to John.

“You were told to stay back.” Caine said coldly, voice low as he slowly stood, hovering very slightly over the ground.
