screw the odds

         “Prejudice of the way you look? Oh please, I looked like the way you did at your age so it’s got nothing to do about the way you look, it’s got to do with the boxes you’ve got in your bag and why, they look so awfully familiar.” yeah no, she might be a kids doctor but that didn’t necessarily mean she was stupid, she was well and fully aware as to what was going on.

         looking arizona up and down, lexie scoffed.   “ yeah, right. sure you did, miss clean-cut and preppy. ”   the wheels on her shoes and the animals on her coat didn’t exactly inspire much confidence in the doctor’s words.   “ did you graduate on top of your class from med school or just with honors? ”   though irritating the blonde might’ve not been the best approach, lexie was still trying to distract from the problem at hand. it had worked on a good number of other people before.

Nathan knew that she was right. He did like having sleep next to him. He had hated not having anyone beside him before. “You got me there.” He said. When she mentioned that his food should be ready, he looked at it, he nodded. “It is.” He smiled and served it up before walking over to sit down by her.

“ i suppose the third time really is the charm. ”   lexie smiled as he sat down next to her, nodding at his omelette. in all fairness, it hadn’t been solely his fault that the first two attempts ended up as semi-burned heaps of protein in the trash can. pressing a kiss to the back of gizmo’s head, she shifted to face him.   “ are you gonna be on call again tomorrow? ”

                      “well,  you know,  we can’t all score the jackpot memory.  besides,  things aren’t always so black and white for everyone.”

“It is my place. So I can make you sleep on the couch.“ He laughed. At the mention of them both being surgeons, he nodded. “Thats true. I can’t argue with that.“ He told her. Of course he wasn’t expecting her to throw the toy at him. He was taken by surprise. “You are so lucky that didn’t land in my omelette.“

“ yeah, you could but you won’t. ”   she grinned, pulling the dog into her lap and scratching behind his floppy ear.   “ because even if you refuse to admit it, you like having someone sleep next to you. and i do live just next door. ”   not that she was going to admit it but lexie had gotten used to their little arrangement just as much as he had.   “ oh, please. like i said, i have excellent hand-eye coordination. but speaking of which, your food should be done by now. ”

Nathan looked at Lexie as she said this. “It wasn’t about anything interesting.” He said. “You know when you just zone out but think of nothing in particular. Its like that.” He told her. He watched her throw the toy. “You are going to break something one day.” He laughed.

tugging on a loose string of the couch cushion in her lap, lexie nodded, releasing a bored huff.   “ yeah, i do. ”   but it was only a matter of seconds before the boredom turned into exasperation at his comment.   “ well, a) it’s your place. so i don’t really care. and b) i would like to remind you that you aren’t the only trained surgeon here. i’ll have you know that my hand-eye coordination is excellent. watch... ”   taking the toy from gizmo once more, lexie turned to throw it straight at nathan this time, hitting him square in the chest before she dissolved into laughter.

Nathan had been in a world of his own as he made the omelette. He hadn’t even realized how the door was squeaking his toy. He was brought out of his thoughts when he heard Lexie though. He looked down at the omelette. It seemed okay. “Nothing. I was just daydreaming…thats all.”

“ daydreaming about what? ”   lexie questioned, ruffling the dog’s fur when he retrieved the turtle.   “ good boy. —if it’s something dirty, i don’t wanna to know. ”   she was trying to get a reaction from nathan. anything at all that would tell her what was on his mind.   “ no, you know what? i do wanna know. anything’s better than this boring tv show. ”   she grumbled, scowling at the screen and hurling the dog toy down the hall once more.

     “ mark... sean. ”   lexie introduced, gesturing between the two men; spine stiff, smile fake and eyes pleading.    “ sean this is dr.— ”    ‘mark sloan, famous double-board certified plastic surgeon and ENT. can't believe i finally get to meet you. i’ve heard all about you.’ her husband promptly interrupted, cheshire cat smile in place and hand outstretched in greeting. oh, this was bad...

         tugging on the squeaky toy caught between the dogs teeth, lexie glanced over her shoulder to where nathan was standing at the stove.    “ hey, wonderboy. you might wanna pay more attention to that omelette of yours or it’s gonna burn like the last two did. ”,    she teased, finally managing to steal the squeaking turtle from the mutt and throwing it across the apartment, the dog chasing right after it.    “ what’s got you so distracted? ”

         “ i did not steal those meds. i have adhd, okay? i have a prescription for that. ”   prescription or not, that didn’t explain the three brand new packages of adderall in her bag. which was precisely why lexie was trying to divert the attention elsewhere.   “ you think you might be a little prejudiced? because of the tattoos and the piercings and the hair? ”

    “I’m trying..” the blonde spoke as she trailed off, taking note of what the brunette had said, along with the look on her face, yeah she knew that look. “I am doing what I can, and I bet you’re doing the same as well.”  Arizona rubbed Nate’s back gently, smiling at how comfortable the youngster seemed to be in her arms. Seems like this little child liked her, that was okay by the blonde, at least someone did. Hearing Lexie ramble on about being pregnant and a whale, Arizona can’t help the laugh fall out of her lips “I feel like a whale sometimes, Sof says I look like I’ve had too much to eat for Christmas dinner.” she spoke fondly of her daughter. Seeing the excitement in Matty’s eyes, the blonde smiled, that was the reason why she created the kids surgery class to begin with. Leaning into Lexie to hear her question, Arizona shook her head before continuing “No…I run the class.”

      lexie could’ve easily brushed arizona’s reply aside, if it wasn’t for the lingering weight those words carried. it was almost like she had caught onto the turmoil happening inside of lexie’s head, but the brunette couldn’t let herself dwell on that.   “ yeah, i am. ”   she replied simply, though her smile ended up looking somewhat forced but soon turned genuine when arizona explained sofia’s point of view.   “ that’s cute. as long as she doesn’t say you look like you swallowed the whole christmas tree. —have you picked names yet? ”   learning that arizona would be teaching the class seemed to excite matthew even more. it figured, he already knew her, which took away the stress of having to meet even more new people. ‘i know all about the brain and the heart and the other organs...’ he began to ramble as lexie’s shoulders dropped with relief.   “ thank god. are you really sure it’s not gonna a problem? i mean, i could help if you wanted me to? ”

lexie and sean got married after she found out that she was pregnant with matthew

sean thinks matt is mark’s child and that lexie cheated on him during their early days

he’s only been thinking that since he learned what mark looks like, the resemblance is uncanny

sean cheated on her, several times over a period of two years, at least as far as she knows

sean tells her that he’s still in love with her and begs lexie not to leave him whenever he’s had something to drink

they still live together and sleep in the same bed, despite the fact that lexie has filed for divorce

the boys usually crawl into bed with them, which is when sean leaves and goes to sleep in matthew’s bed, it makes the whole situation a little easier

lexie fears that sean would win a fight for full custody

she wants to make sure her kids have a good relationship with both parents

matthew has a photographic memory and is a very soft spoken but highly intelligent kid, he wants to become a neurosurgeon like his mother

nathan isn’t afraid of anything, he’s a powerhouse and just full of love, he wants to become a police officer or a fire fighter when he’s grown up

asking mark to come over was quite possibly the worst idea lexie had ever had in her entire life. but two and a half glasses of wine in, getting closure seemed like a plausible option. closure. that’s what this was about. because it had to be. anything else just wasn’t an option, regardless of how she felt about him. mark deserved to be happy and she didn’t want to mess that up. the longer lexie waited, curled against the armrest of the couch in her dad’s living room with some random reality show playing on the tv, the worse of an idea it seemed for them to be meeting like this. but she didn’t know if she was ever going to get a chance like this again. how could she not take it?

“ it’s just what i’ve always wanted, ” mark said with a small chuckle. there was lingering awkwardness between the two of them. it was almost tangible. “ they’re giving me a run for my money, ” he nodded slowly with a small sigh. sofia and ellie were everything he’d always wanted and he wished he’d gotten the chance with sloan. “ i’m happy for you too. he’s a great kid and i can’t imagine his brother is any different. ”

it’s just what i’ve always wanted. lexie had to swallow at those words, vividly remembering the last time she had heard them coming from him, no matter how much she tried not to.   “ good. that’s-that’s good. they should. ”   managing a somewhat nervous laugh, she added.   “ trust me, it’s only gonna get worse from here on out. so good luck with that. ”   girls could be tricky to deal with, especially for dads. running a hand through nathan’s hair, her head bobbed in a small nod.   “ yeah, they are. i’m really lucky. ”   at least in that respect. feeling the awkwardness grow between them, lexie forced an even brighter smile. he was happy. he had his little family. she had to leave.   “ speaking of which. i-i should probably go see what he’s up to. nurse tanya is gonna kill me if i let her babysit much longer. ”

    “Well, we try everything we can at least…even if sometimes we feel like the worst parents.” she snorted lightly as she felt a hand go to her cheek before feeling smaller arms try and wrap their arms around her neck, it was cute, to have someone so small again just wanting to touch her, perhaps this is what it was going to be like when she had the twins? At Lexie’s comment about the twins, the blonde couldn’t help but let out a slight laugh “You should see what it looks like when I’m in street clothes, it like ..doubles in size?” she commented as she ran her fingers through Nate’s hair as the duo knelt down, waiting for his brother to speak, and when he did, she let out a laugh, more so at Lexie’s response. Clearing her throat, Arizona spoke “I’ve got a better idea. There’s a kids surgery class about to start, it’s full but I know the surgeon running it and I could totally squeeze you two in.” the blonde winked playfully in response.

    don’t we all, lexie wanted to say but the reply never made it past her lips. it was more honest than she wanted to be and not fit for small talk.   “ hey, i’m sure you’re doing great. ”,   was what she settled for instead, her tone encouraging, because they were callie and arizona and she couldn’t imagine them not being great parents. brows lifted, she let out a chuckle at the supposed size of arizona’s baby bump, giving a minor shake of her head.   “ double? you know what, i-i hope so. because i looked like a whale. both times. and i can’t be the only one. —not-not that you look like a whale. y-you’re gorgeous. you’d still be gorgeous looking like... a whale. ”   pressing her lips into a thin line, lexie cut herself off.   “ i’m gonna stop talking now. ”   at the mention of a kids surgery class matty instantly perked up, his bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement as he looked at lexie imploringly. ‘can we?’ he begged, tugging on his mother’s sleeve. ‘please?’ looking from the blonde boy to arizona and back, lexie slowly nodded, shoulders pulling into a shrug.   “ uh.. yeah, sure. of course. ”   focusing on arizona once more, she lowered her voice to a whisper.   “ please tell me it’s not mark running that class... ”
