One January afternoon on Miramar Beach… a year ago.

I inherited this Hallmarky holiday tableau from Mom. She was a person for whom there simply was no such thing as excessive Christmas decorating. I put this little scene on the desk in our entry. A late afternoon sun casts unseasonal dark dramatic shadows across it. Merry Christmas 2020.  

Motorcycles are mobile sculptures (as opposed to sculptures that are mobiles). I don’t ride. But I know people who do. I did this double bike portrait for my step-son—who is also my mechanic.

  Moss on the trunk of a water tupelo indicates the water level of previous floods.

“Knees” of bald cypress grow up from the roots throughout the forest floor. Their function is not entirely understood, but seem to offer structural support during floods…

This is my mom’s old rocking chair. She rocked all her babies in it. And then, in the 70s, she had it reupholstered with a pattern we disagreed on. But it was her chair. And then she rocked her grand babies and eventually great grand babies in it. It sits in my studio because it’s still a damn comfortable chair. But I still disagree with the pattern.

My wife says one of the most peaceful sounds you can hear is a horse munching hay. That’s true. But it’s not simple.
