Skimmer Boy

What is the significance of this object? This is a skim board, and represents my love for hanging out at the beach and being active, and jamming on the water

How has this artifact provoked new thinking and connections? This artifact is kept in my room so that it is readily accessible for summer so that i cna feel motivated to bring it along. This is also how my and my brother used to hang out as we would go to orewa beach and jam skim boarding for a while and have a good time together.

Can you see evidence of a personal/opinion/point of view? Some people like to go to the beach to swim or tan alone but i enjoy the other activities that can be done there as well eg surfing, skim boarding, sport. Like trying new things as well and want to try and get good and these sort of things

Interpret, compare, contrast and evaluate visual elements It also reminds me of summer as it a watery pattern on it and beachy writing. It is also blue to represent the ocean. There is wax on it so the user can stay on the board easier. It is shaped to skim on the water well

What are the compositional, material or formal qualities? It is made from wood with a painted layer on the top

Are there technical components, processes or challenges? The challenges this brings is trying to find the motivation to go to the beach in the winter as it is cold, also friends don't feel they are good at skim baording so don't play with it too long and would rather swim. The beach can be not ideal conditions for skim baord eg there is not enough shallow water to skim on

What contextual (historical, social, cultural, enviromental and contemporary) findings are useful? Skimboarding is similar to surfing as it is also a waterboard sport. Skimboarding can be easier to learn versus surfing. However, catching and riding the waves is harder than surfing. Skimboarding is a harder sport to master than surfing for most.

Are there relationships to work you've made? Not quite yet but there will be to do with summer
