Caption: [A question on screen reads, "I'm curious how common gender swapping roles is in this scene? It feels way more inviting to me than the latin/ballroom scene I used to be in".
Hey, thanks for this question. The Lindy Hop community has done a fair amount of work degendering the roles and making the dance much more inclusive over all. Of course there's always work to be done but I thought it'd be fun to go through a few examples of people switching or dancing the non-traditional roles. What you're watching right now is the switch competition at Camp Hollywood.
It's one of the newer competitions and it is so fun to watch. People switching roles on the fly is always really entertaining. Definitely look this competition up on Youtube, it's amazing. One of the first competitions I ever finaled in was Jack and Jill in San Luis Obispo. Since then, the Lindy Hop community has done away with the name jack and Jill and those competitions are now named "Mix and Match" as a way to be more gender neutral.
In this competition, I was paired with Calvin, who has since gone on to be an incredibly influential member of the queer community in the Lindy Hop scene. Calvin and some other amazing dancers from the Bay Area have started The Switch, a whole dance weekend dedicated to giving dancers the space to dance the roles that they want to, especially outside of gender norms.
On the European front, we've got the DecaVita sisters doing their thing out of Sweden. And it would be remis of me to not mention Adam Brozowski, whose done a tone of work, research, and interviews on LGBTQ issues and people within dance history. Here's him slaying it with his partner Dante.]

WONDER BAR (1934) | dir. Lloyd Bacon
âThe other [scene that stands out above the rest] involved a handsome man, asking a dancing couple if he could cut in. The female partner, expecting his attention, agrees, only to see him dance with her male partner. Jolson then flaps his wrist and says, âBoys will be boys. Woo!â. This scene almost caused the Production Code to reject the film, and was featured in the opening scenes of the documentary film The Celluloid Closet (1996).â
Here is the actual clip, and let me tell you, Jolsonâs delivery does not disappoint:
For those who have trouble reading that:
Imagine being a black, gay drag queen in the 1800s after being born into enslavement AND having the style and cachè to throw soirĂŠes that the girls had to come to! Thatâs why I donât want to hear this âweâre not our ancestors stuff.â Youâre right!
From The Very Black Project Page- William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a âqueen of dragâ. Imagine the queenery of this icon.
He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the âqueen of dragâ. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for âkeeping a disorderly houseâ (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ communityâs right to gather.
He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans.
When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls.
Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s!
William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. Tell his story!
I assume these have been posted, but friends, you HAVE to see some more photos from this shoot:
Just want to include some information on The Cake Walk!
The Cake Walk was a sort of putting on of movements in an exaggerated or mocking way while alluding to the movements of "The Masters of the House". It developed out of mocking the ballroom dance the Minuet, mocking because slaves werenât permitted to take part in the dances of white people. Most "Masters of the House" assumed that slaves couldnât dance any better than the âfunnyâ movements of the Cake Walk. Ex-ragtime entertainer Shepard Edmonds related a story told to him by his parents that hints at the origins of the name, âthe cake walk was originally a plantation dance done on Sundays when there was little work. The slaves both young and old would dress up in hand-me-down finery and do a high-kicking and pancing walk-around. They did a take-off on the manners of the white folks in the âbig houseâ but their masters who would gather to watch the fun missed the point. Supposedly the master would customarily give a cake to the couple that did the proudest movement.â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqpINmqxlsc

Quien sabe. Siempre se aprende algo đ

Can this beauty make a comeback?
At the 1998 Grammy Awards, Pavarotti was too ill to sing Nessun Dorma. Aretha Franklin filled in on 20 minutes notice. This is the result.
Not only was the performance done on 20 minutes notice, she had no rehearsal and simply heard Pavarottiâs rehearsal once on a goddamn tape player and just listened, nodded and said she could do it. the most famous opera song in the world, on one of the biggest nights for music in the world, no rehearsal, and she just went out and did it.
thatâs talent
WHERE IS THE REST I NEED IT.
More backstory: sheâd performed Nessun Dorma at another event two days before, but got asked to take Pavarottiâs slot and basically instantly acceptedâ WHICH HAPPENED AFTER THE SHOW HAD ALREADY STARTED. (The producer didnât hear he wasnât coming until about 1:50 before he was supposed to be onstage.) She got a recording of Pavarotti practicing, and got to sit with his conductor and rehearse until it was time for her performance (the originally scheduled one) and for a bit of time afterwards. She didnât know that there was a 30-strong backing choir or 50-piece orchestra till she saw it on her way down. What a queen.
Link: An interview with the producer of the show.

Make it a good one, kids.
â 1925 Oxford shoes by Coxton Shoe Co. Ltd, Rushden (Northamptonshire), England
âThe âOxfordâ lace-up shoe was the predominant style in menâs footwear during the 1920s. Â It was known in the trade as a âclosed tab shoeâ because the eyelet tabs (the sections of leather with holes for the laces) were stitched under the front section of the shoe, or vamp, Â rather than on top of it. Â
Usually Oxfords were made up in black or brown leather for everyday wear. Â British footwear fashions were conservative during the 1920s with strict rules dictating what colour shoe could be worn with which outfit. Â Brown shoes with a dinner suit were frowned upon and flamboyance was considered distasteful. Â Bright red leather with striking gold swirls would have been considered highly unusual, even vulgar. Â These shoes were made up for display at the London International Shoe Fair in 1925 and may have been aimed at the American market which was open to more exotic designs.â
