Alright so they to mostly started bonding because they ended up going to school things a lot (Paul for Richie and Bill for Alice)
this was back when the kids were pretty young, and since the two worked together as well, it became pretty common practice for the two to babysit for each other
As Bill's marriage starts crumbling, he starts going to Paul for advice/comfort
Paul has no idea what to do with this
Bill seems to not be crying as much after they talk, but Paul always wonders if he said the right thing
Anyway post divorce, Bill starts trying to hang out with Paul a LOT
partially because he is trying to get an idea of how he can preserve his and Alice's relationship and in part because being with Paul makes him less lonely now that he lives alone
Sometimes, Bill is overbearing but Paul usually lets the man since he's going through it, but whenever Paul does bring it (mostly around Bill inviting him to see musicals) he is good about respecting that
Ted starts making fun of them and calling them a couple
Bill starts spiraling into a full on identity crisis
Paul shrugs it off until Emma is like "no babe you two have been going on dates for like months at this point" and proceeds to spiral as well
Most of their dates are just hanging out at either Paul or Bill's apartment depending on if Alice is in town
Alice's reaction to finding out that her dad is dating a man goes from surprise to acceptance to (unknowingly) relief at having something she feels like she can talk about with her dad, and then dread as he starts making gay dad jokes every chance he gets
