hello my followers and mutuals, im posting again about the situation in iran as there is very little reporting on actual iranian lives during these times. i am including links to the information provided and i hope you will help me spreading awareness for iranians who’s voices are being silenced.
iran has passed 80 days of an internet blackout imposed by the islamic regime
the blackout was originally imposed in response to anti government protests. it is a method of oppression and suppression of iranian people.
this is the longest government imposed internet blackout in history
and their economy is severely impacted
people outside of iran have limited to no contact with their families inside iran
and phone calls and text messages within iran are heavily monitored by the regime
the regime has stated they do not intend to restore iranians access to internet.
as the regime carries out executions of protestors - including teenagers -
this is a human rights violation
with so much reporting on trump’s nonsense, on deals of war and ceasefires - it’s so important that we do not forget the actual human lives that have to live under the threat of war and the threat of their own government
i hope you will help me spreading awareness for iranians who are being silenced. and in conversation when people bring up the war, do not forget to also talk about the blackout and ongoing executions.

A collection of time travel humor text posts, not censored by me.
All of these really made me laugh, and laughter is a very good thing sometimes. All of the time, actually. Unless you're doing something that requires a still hand or silence I guess.

I overheard a woman at my job say "Your whole personality revolves around what you hate instead of what you love and thats an awful way to live." to the resident vocal Maga in the breakroom.
He was stunned into silence for at least 60 seconds so that was nice.
The way people on this website react to asian media (live action or animated) make me think you all have not actually unlearned xenophobia.

The propaganda for Koga is missing the fact that his last name literally means wolf, he constantly calls himself an alpha wolf, he has fangs and yellow eyes, he follows his favourite people around like a puppy (hence the nickname), and he was dressed up as a wolf for halloween
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.
It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
Every time I’ve had an idea that looks like a possible use case for AI, I’ve found something in the Creative Commons or public domain that works better. Or I’ve found a way to do it myself.
It’s like this new industry needs people to be ignorant of existing technology and solutions.
So the fun part about GenZ slang being almost 100% AAVE is that I have a dictionary from 2001, from before I was old enough to even know how to use a dictionary, right? And this ain't that abridged shit this is the three columns 8 point font, pages made of tissue paper bound into a book that is 4-5 inches thick shit. You follow?
And there are all these reports on how new slang is and how to understand it and getting it wrong. BUT 2001 GOT ME
TWO THOUSAND AND ONE

Basically I think a lot of White ppl think the antithesis to racism is "Black people are inherently Cool, White people are inherently Lame" and it's just very hard to convince them that this is also extremely racist lmfao
It's the combination of "seeing a racialized group as Fundamentally Inherently Good is still dehumanizing and you aren't seeing them as people" and "your self-flagellating White guilt is extremely annoying for the people of color around you to deal with"

Whether you are young or old, your brain is always changing.
For today's Off Topic Tuesday: debunking the myth that your brain allegedly doesn't fully develop until you're 25, and then just suddenly stops developing at that age. The truth is far more complicated than that.
I personally really hate this myth, because I've seen it used to excuse some pretty abhorrent behavior.
For example, I'm in a Facebook group for the neighborhood of Reykjavík I live in. A Polish immigrant recently made a post about how Icelandic teenagers have been drawing swastikas on his car at night. He made this post to inform parents in the area, and asking parents to speak to their children about why this behavior wasn't acceptable.
Except, predictably, the comment section was full of Icelandic parents justifying this behavior by pulling out the "your brain doesn't fully finish developing until you are 25" myth, saying things like "but they're just children still, I'm sure when they're 25 and their brain finishes developing they'll feel a lot of shame over this behavior". Except, I knew better when I was a teen than to draw a swastika on an immigrant's car, and I'm bloody well sure that these kids are capable of knowing better too.
A few weeks ago I had a session with my therapist where I talked about how damaging it was for me to be harassed and assaulted by my peers when I was in my teens and early 20's. My therapist said something along the lines of "well, you were surrounded by people without a fully developed prefrontal cortex, and unfortunately this is how people without a fully developed prefrontal cortex can be. I'm sure when they turned 25 and their brain fully developed they felt really bad about what they did to you." Except, when I was that age, I knew it was wrong to harass and assault other people, I'm pretty sure the people who had been harassing and assaulting me were also capable of knowing better even at that age.
There are also major double standards in who can have their abhorrent behavior dismissed by "not having a fully developed prefrontal cortex."
There have been several stabbings in Iceland over the past few years, many of them carried out by Icelandic teenagers. There is a typical pattern that unfolds when the news stories break. When the story first breaks something like "man in a parking lot stabbed by teenagers" the common rhetoric you see is "See! This is what happens when you let all of these foreigners into the country! Iceland has been destroyed by all of these immigrants! We need to close the boarders and kick out all of the immigrants now or else this will just keep happening!"
But then, when the news story unfolds that the teenagers who did the stabbing were actually Icelandic, the tone does a total 180. "But they are just children 🥺 how could they possibly know any better at the tender young age of 18 🥺 their brains aren't even fully developed it's not their fault 🥺" when the same people were calling for kicking out all the foreigners when they assumed the stabbing had been done by a teenager of foreign origin.
That's why I personally hate this myth of "your brain doesn't fully develop until you're 25". It's not just that it's used to excuse abhorrent behavior in people under 25, it's the fact that it's used selectively towards privileged young people to excuse behavior that would not be excused in someone of the same age, but less privileged.
Yes, of course young people are going to make mistakes, and do things they may look on with regret when they're older. However, there is a limit, and I actually think it's rather degrading to young people to pretend they're really so mindless that they're not capable of knowing any better. There are some very brilliant young people who have changed the world, and acting like everyone under 25 is really so mindless and animalistic that they really can't tell it's wrong to harass or stab someone is demeaning and degrading to the very brilliant young people out there.
It's time to stop spreading this pseudo-scientific myth, and understand that human brain development, and neuroplasticity, are a much more complicated matter than "it stops at 25".
#oh yeah i also hate it because its been used to deny me healthcare#potentially life saving healthcare i should add#bEcAuSe yOuRe TOO yOuNg to make decisions
Another reason to hate this pseudoscientific myth, it's not just that it's used to avoid accountability in more privileged young people, but it's also often weaponized to deny agency to young people, such as you mentioned in healthcare.
In many cases, agency and accountability are two sides of the same coin. With agency comes accountability, and with accountability comes agency. Denying one is often denying the other.
Or, at least ideally this should be the case. But unfortunately as I talked about above, there is often a double standard in how this myth is applied depending on the privilege of the young person it's being applied to. With more privileged young people, this myth is often weaponized to deny them accountability while they often still have full agency. While with less privileged young people, this myth is often weaponized to deny them agency while still giving them full accountability (and then some).
Tossing out this myth probably won't do away with the double standards in how we treat more privileged vs less privileged people. However, I still think it's good to be able to debunk the pseudoscientific myths people use in the process of trying to remove accountability from privileged young people, and agency from the less privileged.

tbh i think the funniest phenomena that's been happening in the last couple years is "youtuber, having gone too deep into the research hole, has been made an investigative journalist against their will"
Shout out to the guy who wanted to do some fun & silly little reviews but uncovered an illegal gambling operation
(Review 2)
this guy started out poking fun at australian politicians and ended up investigating the firebombing of his own home, during which he uncovered connections between the same politician he was making fun of + major organized crime
JasperDasper started out just curious why everything had suddenly become about trans people and questioning some of the sources used in a book. He came out of it, 4 years later, with a 5 hour long video that connects all transphobia to less than 60 people. (I'm not joking. literally every single transphobic rhetoric and bill passed is because of these 50 or so people.)
If you wanna watch it I cannot recommend it enough; I just warn that it covers a LOT.
ok I'm gonna say something controversial. Not everything in the epstein files is true.
Yes, children were trafficked and raped. No, they did not do ritualistic sacrifice and cannibalism of babies, and the proof of that is in the pudding where the alleged victim showed no signs of scarring after being carved up, and memories that allegedly occurred at the age of 1.
Human trafficking is a serious crime, and as a victim of it we should be taking this with the gravity it is owed. Children were harmed and it was swept under the rug by powerful people.
But that doesn't not make pizzagate real, nor does it mean satanic ritual abuse is real. Perpetuating these myths only ever harms victims of trafficking like myself.
