A big piece of why people feel this way is because they weren't treated like teenagers when they were teenagers. They were treated like young children, so when the switch flips on suddenly there are adult responsibilities and bills to pay, it feels overwhelming as young adults because there weren't stair step, age appropriate responsibilities and markers of development. There's culturally a line of 18 being the age of majority in the US, which is good for making laws to combat child labor and sexual exploitation but bad for things like on an individual level recognizing teenagers can indeed be responsible for major household chores and problem solving and repairs, and as they approach 18 can even start a job and learn what being an adult is like.

A 20 year old is an adult, even if they don't feel like it. And when we talk about feeling overwhelmed as young adults or how we did feel overwhelmed when we came of age, let's not cede linguistic ground to the conservatives who want to make doing literally anything besides signing up for the military before the age of 25 illegal.

I know I keep saying this, but if you're 20-22 years old and actually "know nothing" and are "dumb as rocks" -- if this is a relatively accurate self-assessment and you're not being hyperbolic or insecure -- that's the result of very intentional, willful decisions by people who had power over you growing up (parents, teachers) to actively keep you ignorant.

That goes beyond neglect. Neglected kids at least have some ability to take care of themselves and make decisions, out of pure necessity. If you made it to 18 or 20 or 22 without basic daily decision-making skills, someone (likely multiple someones) put a whole lot of active effort into keeping those skills from you. You deserve to be furiously angry about that, not just passively accept it as a normal stage of human development.

A regular part of my job is trying to reach out to people who have been quietly trying to make their community a better place; the volunteers, the teachers, the fucking. People who rehabilitate injured wild owls in a Quonset hut in the woods, and to a one this is the kind of person who immediately reviles at recognition. The kind of person who immediately says that they never got into this to get praise for it, and that they’d infinitely prefer to quietly plug away at this anonymously forever.

And from this I’ve always drawn two conclusions:

To always distrust Mr. Beast and his ilk who always want their acts of charity done on film, because the people who really want to do good and have no motives to do it besides the doing it never want recognition for it, and

That there are, in the dark, in the quiet, always people who are doing good, and the reason you don’t hear about it is because they’d rather die than receive recognition for it, but they’re real; they do exist. And you are never alone

I’m kinda surprised that nalbinding isn’t as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.

I guess it’s because it’s slower or something.

Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw

It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.

Some people even make rugs.

Yeah I hadn’t heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.

I was surprised that I’d never heard of it though. It’s older than knitting and crocheting and even though it’s been done all over the world it’s super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it.

It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.

You also don’t need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.

It’s also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isn’t really necessary.

Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.
