Given The Chance ~ Chapter 1
Youâd built quite the reputation for yourself over the past few years. Enhancing any skillset that may be useful along the way. And clearly youâd impressed some of the higher ups since you were currently sat opposite Churchill himself. âThereâs a team I want you to meetâ he informed you âit is my thinking that you will be a valuable addition to the groupâ.
That was all there was to it really. Nobody argued with orders from that high up. Youâd been given an address and made your way there that same afternoon. The gates at the end of the driveway had been left open since they knew you were coming. As you got out of the car outside the front of the house though your intuition told you something was amiss.
The front door was left ajar and there wasnât a single light on in the whole house despite the sun sitting low in the sky and darkness setting in. Since the Nazis were yet to hold any British soil you assumed this was some form of convoluted test.
Taking a moment to look over each window carefully, you were sure that there was nobody positioned in any of them. You looked over your shoulder under the guise of fixing your hair and fought back a smile as you spotted somebody hidden behind one of the shrubs. Moving around the front of the car, you dropped to a crouch so that the house was hidden from view.
âIâm a little old for hide and seekâ you called out to the person in the bush âand it seems youâre not particularly good at it anywayâ. There was a pause of silence before a man stood and appeared, making his way over to you. âAh ahâ you mimicked a gun with your fingers and aimed it at him âif weâre going to play games, youâre going to have to play your partâ you imitated two shots at him.
âSeriously?â he asked with raised eyebrows. You simply smirked at him and maintained your position. Reluctantly, he moved to sit on the ground and pulled out a pipe to light.
âFunny actions for a corpse but Iâll let you offâ you peered over the car to see if there was any movement at the house. âDonât suppose the corpse wants to help a lady out with some intel?â
âThat wouldnât be playing the game now, would it?â he shot back.
âI donât know, Iâm rather good at getting information out of enemiesâ you shrugged before standing and making your way slowly to the house, leaving the man behind. Rather than head for the open door, you headed around the back and sided up to a window before carefully peering inside.
A smile graced your lips as you spotted not one but two men waiting in ambush of the front door. Did they think you were some sort of novice? Silently jimmying the window open you climbed through. They were mid conversation when you appeared behind them, both hands mimicking guns again âlooks like youâre out boysâ you spoke up.
The one on the right jumped slightly as he turned to face your raised hands. âThank god for thatâ the other simply commented ânow I can get back to my bookâ. He stood from where he was crouched and held a hand out for you to shake.
âFairly certain corpses donât shake handsâ you joked âlet alone read booksâ.
âYouâre really going to insist we remain here?â he asked incredulously.
âHey, this game was your teamâs idea, not mineâ you insisted âif weâre going to play then you have to do it properlyâ. The two men shared a look before sitting back on the floor with a roll of their eyes.
âWeâll wait here then it seemsâ the one from before spoke up again âif itâll speed the process up you may want to check upstairs nextâ.
âWhat a helpful corpseâ you winked before peering around the doorway and assessing the situation âIâll be quite upset if the information is bad thoughâ.
âYou can trust that I want to return to my book more than I want to sit hereâ he promised. Deciding to take his word for it you slowly moved for the stairs. Taking them silently, testing for any creaks before each step. As you reached the top, you were caught off guard by another woman launching herself at you.
Regaining your balance, you rolled yourself out of the way and sparred with her, dodging kicks and punches whilst assessing her fighting patterns. Once you had a read on her you started to counter move. Moments later you had her pinned to the ground and mimicked a fatal blow. âPleasure to meet youâ you smiled as you moved into a crouch and carefully assessed the corridor.
âItâs going to be lovely to have another woman aroundâ the woman smiled up at you âthe men can be quite unruly at timesâ. Sparing her a smile you stood and moved to start checking rooms. As you went to open one on the right, you felt tension on the door as your started to move it. Checking it over, you spotted the wire at the top right corner.
Taking a blade from your belt, you cut the wire before opening the door the rest of the way. âReally thought that would work to be honestâ a curly haired man sat opposite the door in a chair.
âSorry to disappointâ you shrugged before throwing the blade to the wall right beside his head âand also youâre outâ.
âSo it seemsâ he laughed as he pulled the knife from the wall and started to dig dirt from his nails. That was when another man grabbed you from behind and lifted you from the ground. Fighting against his hold was useless, he had a strength advantage against you. This would require more practical thinking.
Swinging your leg into the back of his knee, you knocked his balance and the two of you went to the ground, giving you chance to escape from his grasp and turn to face him. He was huge! âHey handsomeâ you grinned before rushing towards him whilst he was still on the ground.
He was quick to counter every move you threw at him and a silly move on your part had you pinned beneath him on the ground a few minutes later. âDamnâ you sighed as he grinned victoriously.
âDonât feel too bad, Lassen is our best when it comes to brute forceâ the man from the chair finally stood up and made his way over to you.
âHey handsome?â the man in question asked as you remained pinned beneath him âyou greet all enemies that way?â
âJust the pretty onesâ you grinned at him before pointedly wiggling for him to let you up. He finally released you and offered you his hand to pull you up.
âI like her alreadyâ he turned and grinned to the other man.
In the two weeks that youâd been at the house integrating with the rest of the Ministry, youâd grown particularly fond of Marjorie, Anders a
