Iβve been sick with the flu for the past week and Iβve not been able to hold down food so I guess thatβs a bonus???
"But I can't have an eating disorder BECAUSE..."
βI eat too much!β There is no maximum calorie limit for eating disorders. An eating disorder is not about what you eat, butΒ howΒ you eat- your feelings/thoughts about your body and your intake.
βIβm not underweight!β The majority of people who develop an eating disorder willΒ never become underweight.Β The only disorder that is diagnosed based partially on weight is anorexia- and for that, if youβre an average weight but meet every other criteria, youβll still be diagnosed with βatypical anorexia nervosaβ. It doesnβt mean you arenβt sick or that you donβt need help.
βI donβt meet the anorexia/bulimia guidelines!β OSFED (formerly known as EDNOS) isΒ notΒ a βfailedβ eating disorder. It is every bit as serious as anorexia or bulimia. It is also the most commonly diagnosed eating disorder, meaning more people have this than anorexia or bulimia.
βI donβt make myself sick!β Vomiting is only one form of purging. You can have bulimia, anorexia or OSFED/ARFID and not make yourself sick.
βI still eat!β So does everybody else. You canβt photosynthesise, after all. Even people with eating disorders eat.
βI feel like a fake/ a fraud!β So doesΒ basically every single other eating disordered person.Β This is a really, really, really, really common feeling. You might feel guilty for βmisleadingβ other people into believing the problem is more serious than it is, or feel like youβre overblowing things. Thatβs totally normal and it isΒ not true.Β You are not a fake or a fraud.
βI eat things that no real anorexic would eat!β I have known eating disordered patients with these safe foods: chocolate, frozen meat pizza, fruit, ice cream cones, potatoes, granola I have known eating disordered patients with these fear foods:Β : chocolate, frozen meat pizza, fruit, ice cream cones, potatoes, granola Safe/fear foods are not based on logic or reason. They are individualised. There are even people who donβt haveΒ anyΒ fear foods- theyβll eat anything, theyβll just feel crappy and purge it/ restrict afterwards. All of the experiences described here are those of a person with an eating disorder.
βIβve never been inpatient!β Neither have most eating disorder sufferers.
βIβve never been tube fed!β Neither have most eating disorder sufferers.
βIβve never been near death!β Neither have most eating disorder sufferers.
βMy blood work/ blood pressure is fine! Eating disorders affect different bodies in different ways. Some people find their blood work suffers; others find their blood pressure or pulse dips; others find that, whilst theyβre suffering hugely mentally, their bodies hold up well. This isΒ not a measure of how βsickβ you are.Β All of these things- weight, bp, pulse etc- are just symptoms of the sickness. The sickness is in your head.
βI donβt feel sick enough.β You never will. Sorry. βIβm not sick enough!β is one of the most common ED thoughts there is; please donβt listen to it. It is a lie. Do not compare your misery to someone elseβs; nobody with stage I cancer says βyeah, but that person is a stage III, so Iβm not really that bad and I wonβt get any treatment yetβ.
βI still get my period!β βPeriod lossβ has been removed from the DSM as necessary for a diagnosis of anorexia, and no other eating disorder requires it. It was viewed as a flawed measure of illness, and so it has been removed. Whether or not you get your period is not an indication of how ill you are.
βBut I binge eat without throwing upβ Binge eating disorder is a newly added eating disorder in the DSM, where people eat large amounts of food in an βout of controlβ manner but then do not compensateΒ inappropriatelyΒ for it. It is very much a real eating disorder.
βI donβt calorie count/ weigh myself!β I know many people with eating disorders- including anorexia- who have never calorie counted, or who donβt own a pair of scales. Itβs not required for diagnosis.
βI think about food all the time!β This is a symptom of an eating disorder.Β MalnutritionΒ causes the brain to focus 100% of its attention on food- finding it, getting it, eating it. Daydreaming orΒ fantasizingΒ about food does not mean you are not sick; quiteΒ the opposite, in fact.
βBut IΒ enjoyΒ eating!β Most people do. Eating is enjoyable. Even in the depths of my restriction, the food I ate brought me great pleasure. Itβs linked to the previous point, to a certain extent. Enjoying food does not mean you donβt have an ED.
βBut this is just how I am!β Eating disorders often start in early childhood, and it can be hard to break out of a pattern that well-entrenched. Itβs not impossible, though. Chronic eating disorders can be harder to beat, but theyΒ canΒ be beaten.

I donβt think enough people talk about the social hierarchy of eating disorders.
So, this is simply a reminder that Bulimia is NOT βfailed anorexia.β Binge-Eating Disorder is NOT laziness and voluntary lack of self control. OSFED is NOT any less valid that anorexia. And, Anorexia is NOT cute or desirable.
These are all horrible and deadly disorders, and there is no way to βfailβ at having a mental illness. We are all suffering is different ways and that is always valid and deserving of help.
It was my boyfriendβs bday two weekends ago and we took a little trip. It was really fun but of course I ate SO much because that was like the entire point of the trip. My mom took us to an all you can eat place. I hate how much I ate.
No more, I have to get back on track. Iβm feeling so disgusting, and Iβve been snacking too much.
