This is Farah, an autistic girl from Gaza who is almost sixteen years old, though you wouldn't say it from her stature. Farah has experienced stunted growth due to her chronic kidney problems.

Her kidneys leak potassium, putting her at severe risk of becoming deficient. Before I started a fundraiser for her and her family, her potassium was dangerously low and she had started to experience muscle weakness in her leg. Her mother wasn't able to afford the right amount of potassium supplements for her, so she was rationing them, only giving her daughter 1/3 of the required dose.

Muscle weakness is a known complication of hypokalemia (which is the fancy word for potassium deficiency), and can be fatal if it affects one's heart (since it is also a muscle). The worst complication is therefore cardiac arrest.

I sometimes think about how close Farah might have been to death and shudder. Luckily we didn't have to find out. I started Farah's fundraiser and we managed to get enough donations for one month's worth of potassium supplements. And the next month, and the next,...

Until this month. Farah's mother Wesal (@shahdgazza) has been telling me that she's having trouble getting access to the medication. She is not the only person in Gaza who has told me there is a scarcity of certain medications. A couple of weeks ago, she was able to get her hands on a strip of potassium pills that expired four months ago. It's better than nothing, though. Then last week she was able to buy another ten tablets, but each one cost $10. Wesal has started rationing the supplements again.

If Farah's potassium levels get dangerously low again, she might need to be hospitalised to be supplemented intravenously. This is something we really want to avoid, because it is very stressful for Farah! But we also need to make sure we can afford it if she does have to go to the hospital.

19-year-old Khalil Al Habil's liver and kidneys are failing. Shrapnel damage from the bombardment that killed his baby brother Omar has gone mostly untreated due to a lack of funds and resources. The ill effects of this damage have progressed to the point that the organs are losing their ability to function. Khalil urgently needs 3 rounds of treatment to combat the effects of his deteriorating liver and kidneys.

We've paid off the first round of treatments but Khalil has two treatments that he still needs. The second costs about $1,250 usd, but we haven’t made much progress in more than a month and his condition is getting progressively worse. We need to meet this second goal ASAP!!!

The lethargy and fatigue caused by his deteriorating organ function only make reaching out more difficult. He is in very, very bad shape, and I’m extremely worried about him.

He has gone so long between sessions that he requires additional medications to sustain him between treatments. With a price of $1500 for the treatment for his failing organs, and $500 for supplementary medications, this is where we are for round 3:

we didn't even manage to raise the money for his immune globulin injection last week, and we are now, on top of that, about $1k in debt to the doctor for the iv fluids he had to take for that.

that has to be paid for in conjunction with his urgent digoxin injection, which he will die without, which means the minimum amount we have to raise by tuesday 4 pm gaza time is $2,129.

i am really not feeling optimistic, because we had to urgently evacuate the family last week from israel's active bombing and no one cared enough to contribute almost any donation at all, even as small as $5 - only a small handful of people chipped in.

if we don't get this money before the end of tuesday, ammar will need over $6k, as it will include an intensive injection on top of everything we already have to pay

and i know we're not going to get that, so really what will happen is he will die

i don't know what i can say to convince you to help keep him alive, but i beg you not to let israel successfully kill him

we really need the immune globulin injection before 10 am thursday samah's time, tomorrow, which is about 20 hours from now, so i have cut down the temporary goal right now to focus only on this

if we take longer than that time, ammar will need more iv fluids - but, because we didn't pay for the previous amounts we had to use, he won't be able to receive them. this means he'll probably die, or certainly be much worse off

therefore, we urgently need to raise enough for that injection. he badly needs it, just like the digoxin injection
