They build in value over time, which is why wealthy people keep theirs in safety deposit boxes and will on wear on rarified occasions. #costumejewelry such as in this picture is great to have. In abundance and can be worn often. Even if the break or God-forbid stolen, you be angry and disappointed but it isn't such a huge loss. Costume jewelry: free to $500 if no precious metals or stones are in the piece is for daily wear. Fine jewelry: $500 (Tbh I would say value min of 3k) and up are investments. Not for daily or even yearly wear unless you are rich already and can easily afford to replace.
