Indian Summer // Jai WolfÂ
So basically, a post about this song popped up on my Facebook timeline and I immediately stopped scrolling - because JAI WOLF, and secondly, because ODESZA. Could it be?! Two of my favourite producers, somehow linked?! And then I clicked play, and my world has never been the same again. Â
So it turns out that I somehow missed the memo that Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, the guys behind Odesza (oh bless their souls, their free album Summerâs Gone will forever be one of the albums that most influenced my taste in electronic music) have started the Foreign Family Collective back in March of this year and theyâve released three singles by up-and-coming producers so far.Â
Jai Wolfâs first officially-released original, Indian Summer, is the third in this series, and I was blown away by the versatility of this producerâs sound. Iâve had my eye on his music ever since his bass-thumpinâ, wolf-growlinâ dubstep remix of Skrillex and Niki the Doveâs Ease My Mind just a mere half year ago. Since then, weâve been obsessed with his remix of kittyâs Miss U and Mockiâs Weekend all day errâ day. Oh yeah, and he also played Coachella this year.Â
Back to this song, and weâre hearing everything from synthpop to pitched vocals in another language that sound like something my friend Anjana let me listen to a while ago from her Bollywood soundtracks. Thereâs a decent atmospheric build-up that I wouldnât have expected from Jai Wolf given his previous inclinations to deliver straight-on dance chops right away. All I can say is, Iâm glad this 23-year-old producer is still experimenting and somehow finding his own sound among all those expectations of genre-boxing that come with music journalism (we have to describe things somehow!) as well as from listeners. It keeps things fresh and flowing - kind of like ice cream, which Iâm going to need to keep this hot track off my tongue.Â
