"Why did I feel a chill yesterday morning...?"

Itâs growing dark early in Washington this time of year. When the gathering begins, thereâs already a full moon out, huge and gold and low over the hills, with a few distant pines silhouetted perfectly against its face. A witchy, werewolf sort of moon.
For those who needed to be picked up: Beta couldnât resist appearing directly behind them. After some brief explanation (and encouragement, if needed), they offer their hand, and smile. Whoosh, spirited away to the remote woods of Washington State!Â
(The trip was near instantaneous, and Beta was gentle, but if one kept their eyes open at just the right time, one might have caught a glimpse of something stretching across the field of vision, intertwined with barely visible gigantic prisms. Serpentine, with numerous legs, and a single smiling pink eye.)
The party is being held outside of Amosâs purple van, in a meadow tucked in the woods, far from any roads. The area is well cloaked in spells meant to turn away any uninvited eyes. A tall bonfire is roaring. Every so often, green and violet flames leap up among the orange. The smoke shifts hue every time another log is thrown on.

Taking a portal hadnât been a problem for Maria or Sixer, so Beta hadnât needed to pick them up. Granted, Maria hadnât been to their home in Washington yet, but Sixer had, and that was enough.
Sixer could feel the cloaking spells that were set up around the van, and his tails twitched with curiosity -- more at how they had been built than why they were there in the first place. After all, everyone wanted a modicum of privacy from time to time, and Sixer wasnât about to ask for reasons. It had been made quite clear that the trio of extra-dimensional beings were not eager to do anything to tear the dimension apart, after all.
Their costumes got an amused chuckle from him, although he hoped the axe wasnât going to be used on anyone present. He didnât recognize the others who had been invited, and he was certain that his six tails would draw their attention. Nothing like a kitsune walking around with no true costume to be spoken of to draw at least a little attention.
The absence of human ears would more than likely do that.
âThese things have to be at least somewhat eldritch.â Sixer frowned at one of the strange, frog-like things that had taken up residence in the woods. âAt least theyâve figured out that our house isnât a place they can simply wander into.â
His green-eyed twin snorted and picked up one of the three amphibians theyâd stumbled across in the woods. âI sure hope so. Is there anything thatâll really kill these things?â
âBelieve me, if I find the answer, youâll be the first to know,â Sixer replied dryly. âIn the meantime, we need to make sure these things arenât going to upend the local ecosystem as we know it.â
âSure. You do that, anâ Iâll find out whatâll end these...these cosmic horror frogs.â
The two frogs Crescent hadnât grabbed seemed to exchange looks with each other before hopping off into the underbrush. The one in his grip flailed about, hanging by one leg. It seemed to be thinking about taking a bite out of his hand.

Sixer watched Maria walk into the treeline and sighed quietly. Sheâd woken up with a haunted expression on her face and had asked for some time alone to clear her head.
âEven she still has some nightmares, despite everything sheâs left behind.â Sixer sighed and shook his head.
He decided to linger on the porch of his home. The day was nice, and he didnât have any important research to get to. Perhaps he could enjoy the last moments of summer, before autumn came in and set off the migration patterns of some of the local creatures.
Skyfire carefully sneaks up on Mable and Waddles before pouncing playfully. (I live!)
Mabel squealed as the little dragon came pouncing in out of nowhere. Waddles squealed too, but his sounded more panicked before he realized that the dragon was familiar and...somewhat friendly?
âSkyfire!â Mabel exclaimed in delight. âItâs good to see you! Howâve you been?â
Skyfire gave Waddles an apology lick before hugging Mabel. âI been really excited cause the longest day happened and I turned ten! You know what that means? I got my fire!â she exclaimed in excitement while jumping around. âWanna see? Wanna see?â
Mabel gasped in delight. âYouâre ten? Thatâs awesome! Welcome to the double digits!â
The revelation that followed on Skyfireâs declaration made Mabelâs wide widen. âYou can breathe fire?! Wow! Showmeshowmeshowme! And then we can find Grunkle Sixer or Maria and they could give you some pointers!â
If anyoneâs been wondering what Iâve been up to âÂ

Mental Link is coming along at a nice pace, I have to say. And I donât plan to slow downâŚmuch.
(Gimme a break here, chapter 32 is nowhere near the final climactic moments of this story yet)
((I know Iâve got at least one person whoâs got multiple threads running with me, and theyâre waiting on responses from me. Iâll get to them when I remember to write something that isnât FFVII fanfiction! Promise!))

Dominic had waited months to enact her plan so that Sphinx and Gargrunkle wouldn't suspect. She waited until Sphinx came out and away before she snuck up on him in her dragon form and roared. She could settle for scaring them one at a time.
Catching Sphinx outside of the Mystery Shack wasnât hard, but catching him alone was another matter. He often walked through the woods with one of his niblings, or a counterpart, or his own twin when they wanted to stalk unsuspecting gnomes in the night. It kept them from trying to kidnap tourists.
So when Sphinx stepped out one morning for a stroll on his won to look for something that required light paws and minimal noise, he certainly wasnât expecting to get snuck up on by a dragon of all things.
Or, rather, he had heard there was something behind him, but he hadnât turned around soon enough.
A lionâs roar met Dominicâs as Sphinx turned sharply, spreading his wings out in an attempt to make himself look bigger. He didnât look scared, per se, but he had certainly been startled.

âYep! A small clan in New York. They were kind to me and helped me get away from some bad humans⌠and arguably the one bad gargoyle of that world. Her name was Demona and she was by far one of the most vicious beings Iâve ever come across.â Dominic explained. âDoes your brother turn to stone during the day too?â
âHm.â Sphinx tilted his head slightly. âThat might be something to investigate, later. Iâll have to see if there is anything in this dimension that hints at their existence.ââ
Knowing that there was a gargoyle who Dominic referred to as âbadâ was troublesome, but if the Pines learned about the gargoyles before they learned about them, it could give some advantage.
âHe does turn to stone on occasion, but they are quite rare,â Sphinx replied. âHe does sleep more during the day, but he keeps the curtains pulled shut, so the sun never touches him unless he sleeps on the roof. And even then, he only becomes petrified if heâs been injured by some monster. I assume you are asking because these gargoyles do this?â

Morpho, in drone form, and Beta, in caterpillar form, stood just down the dirt road from the greatly expanded Mystery Shack Sixer and his alternates, family and friends called home, just over the edge of the unicorn magic radius. Beta had been the one to show the way. Truthfully, Morpho didnât even know anymore if the unicorn spell was as potent against them as it used to be, but they could still feel it and respected the line.Â
Each of them held a covered bucket.
âWhy are we standing all the way over here?â
For Stanleyâs sake.
âYou mean Crescent?â
Him and the other ones.
âWill they know it was us?â
Iâm certain of it. This is just the kind of thing Ford Pineses are all aboutâ a brand new species!
The two of them upended their buckets, releasing a swarm of hundreds of young mutant frogs. They stopped, as if to take in their new environment, and then they made an immediate, single-minded beeline for every weak point in the house. Every loose board and shingle, every cracked open window, every air vent, soon had frogs trying to wriggle in, because if there was one thing they knew it was that House meant People, People meant Food, and More House meant More People meant More Food.
And you couldnât ask for better forest habitat for the little ones, Morpho added, fondly. Right, letâs skedaddle before they see us.

It had been a quiet, beautiful summer day. The Pines were scattered about the house, with the air conditioner running and all the windows shut. A good day to sit inside, read over research, and watch TV while avoiding the heat as best as possible.
Until a loud rattling noise overtook the entire house.
âWhat in the name of....â
Sixer looked up from one of the dusty tomes heâd been reading, and frowned at the ceiling. âIt shouldnât be hawktopus breeding season, thatâs not for another ten years at least...â
âI canât believe that you know that,â grumbled his counterpart from across the room.
âI may as well. They are in Gravity Falls, and I canât exactly call myself normal in comparison.â Sixer rose to his feet. âThis is new, though...â
A scream came from the hallway, and one of Sixerâs nieces burst into the study. âGrunkle Sixer! Grunkle Stanford! Weâve got a frog invasion!â
Sixer and Stanford exchanged looks.
âFrog invasion?â Stanford adjusted his glasses.
âY-yeah! Theyâre trying to get into the house!â
Sixer frowned. âWhy would--â
Glass shattered, and a yell came from somewhere else in the house. âGet out of the kitchen or so help me Primus weâre having barbecued frog legs tonight!â
Sixerâs expression shifted. âBoard up as many open areas as you can to keep these things out. Stanford, it would be wise if we gave Maria some help in keeping these things out of the house.â He moved out of the study quickly, leaving Mabel and Stanford watching after him as his tails flicked with ice and fire.
"Locating the components was the easy part, apparently." Sixer was holding a crystal in one hand and a flashlight in the other. "My nephew lost the original at some point, but thankfully putting something new together wasn't an issue. And you don't have to go monster hunting to collect the components, either." Bonus! (sixfingersixtails)
She hops excitedly at the news. Seeing the crystal and flashlight TONS bigger than she actually is makes her doubt that she couldâve handled it on her own. Even if werenât for the local monsters that reside in Gravity Falls, she couldâve been eaten by an owl once she steps inside the forest.Â
âHoly shit you did it! Thatâs amazing, Sixer!â She holds her arms out, more ready than ever.
âNOW BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY!âÂ
@sixfingersixtails
curioosity
She notices that sheâs growing, taller and taller until she reaches her normal height- okay maybe more than her normal height- around 7 feet tall, for personal reasons, of course.
âOkay, Sixer! This is perfect! You can stop now!â
Sixer definitely knew that this was taller than Azura was supposed to be. Seven feet tall was taller than him by a good deal, and she had definitely been shorter than that when heâd seen her last. But, he did tell her he wasnât going to stop until she told him.
He flicked the flashlight off and looked up at her with a raised eyebrow and an amused smirk. âWell, there you are. Iâll leave the flashlight with you, in case you want to adjust your size again later.â He spun the flashlight around in his hand and held it out to her, handle first. âJust be careful and take your time getting adjusted back to a more human height. I suspect you will be bumping into the tops of doorways for a little while.â
