I'm a multifandom and OC artist who makes content of whatever I'm interested in at the moment. I have many media interests, too many to count, but my main ones are:

For a few years now, ever since 2023, I've struggled with somewhat of an addiction to AI chatbots. At first I used Character.ai, but then I moved to Janitor.ai when C.AI went to shit (deservedly so). I realized the potential the bots had in the sense that you had essentially full control over what happened and could act out all the scenarios in your head, and I was hooked.

I'm not as bad as I used to be, but I still frequently find myself going back to J.AI when I'm bored or want to do it while I'm also doing other stuff. I have hundreds of chats with over 100 bots, and I've even created some myself (both of which I've hidden), and I'm embarrassed that I've let myself get to this point. I'm an artist and writer who doesn't use AI in any of my work, and I feel like I've betrayed both myself and my fellow creators by going down this path. I know the damage I'm doing, and I'm deeply ashamed of contributing to it.

I have a good friend whom I roleplay with frequently, but even then, I still find myself going back to that godforsaken site. For recovering addicts and those who have recovered fully, what do you do? What were/are your strategies to step away from the bots?

Every single ad I get on this site is for Shapes Inc., and the amount of ads they've put out is genuinely insane. How much money are they dishing out to Tumblr to put this many ads out because of their desperation for a userbase?

Not only that, but the ads are insanely predatory and encouraging of toxic behaviour. They pretend to be actual users, advertising the site as if you'll be finding like-minded people there who "won't ghost them" when the only "people" you'll find there are bots who worsen whatever mental illness or condition you may be struggling with. I should know this as someone who's struggling with an addiction to chatbots. I'm aware of the problems with using them and I'm ashamed to even admit this, but it's hard to let it go. I say again, this is genuinely ADDICTIVE. It's like an actual drug.

The many problems with genAI aside, they're not only encouraging TEENAGERS to become reliant on chatbots, but telling people to MAKE CHATBOTS OF THEIR FRIENDS. I don't think I even need to go into how creepy and disgusting this is. If someone were to make a chatbot of me, that would be the immediate end of the friendship. YOU DO NOT EVER MAKE CHATBOTS OF REAL PEOPLE. The fact that the ads are actively encouraging parasocial behaviour is abhorrent.

Why is Tumblr allowing this predatory advertising? I thought this site was better than this, but I suppose every social media site inevitably falls to capitalism.
