Sure, we don’t have much on Regulus, but what we do know of him, is definitely not that he’s pathetic. Sirius commented in OotP that he was soft, and maybe that can be read as pathetic, but we have to first take into account that Sirius did not know of the change in Regulus’ heart. Another thing: People keep saying that Regulus suddenly changed his mind when Voldemort almost killed Kreacher, but I don’t believe for a second that this was the thing that made him turn. Regulus is a Slytherin (another thing we know of him), and I’m sure that whatever he witnessed during his time as a Death Eater gave him enough reason to doubt. I think the Black family raised him to be dignified and not brutal (that’s the job of those inferior to him), and Regulus was smart. I mean, come on, he knew somehow that Voldemort made Horcruxes, while Dumbledore didn’t. Yes, Voldemort let it slip, like he did in GoF, but you really need to be quite observant, if you want to catch these things. So I doubt he just cast himself headlong into the ocean (or, actually he did, but I doubt he did it for ONE thing happening).

Also, I’ve noticed many like to criticize him for not going to Dumbledore, but unlike Snape, Regulus has grown up with people who most likely spoke ill of Dumbledore. Just cause he forsake the Death Eaters, doesn’t mean he has forsaken his family. Even in death he tried to protect them, by not telling Kreacher anything that he could end up telling to anyone. Regulus most likely didn’t trust Dumbledore, and why should he? Has the man actually given him a reason? By going to Dumbledore, would he go from one Master to another? I mean, imagine what the Order must look to people like Regulus. They probably seem like cronies for Dumbledore. For all Regulus knows he can’t truly trust those Higher Powers.
