A new hobbyist developed app warns if people nearby may be wearing smart glasses, such as Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, which stalkers and harassers have repeatedly used to film people without their knowledge or consent. The app scans for smart glasses’ distinctive Bluetooth signatures and sends a push alert if it detects a potential pair of glasses in the local area.
The app comes as companies such as Meta continue to add AI-powered features to their glasses. Earlier this month The New York Times reported Meta was working on adding facial recognition to its smart glasses. “Name Tag,” as the feature is called, would let smart glasses wearers identify people and get information about them from Meta's AI assistant, the report said.
I am against Meta and everything they stand for but I’m curious if peoples’ opinions would change about someone wearing them as a disability aid?
Not necessarily, because Meta has military contracts (source 1, source 2, source 3), is testing surveillance tech on their own employees and their customers (source 4, source 5), and there are at least two class action lawsuits against them for privacy violations (source 6, source 7, source 8). There is also some sketchy stuff about workers being forced to review material, which may or may not be used without the customer's permission, that is sensitive, graphic, and/or pornographic (source 9).
The American Foundation for the Blind has said that "The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are an accessibility tool only by coincidence. That makes them more affordable and, in many ways, unaware of the needs of users with reduced vision" although they do have seemingly positive views on Meta Glasses as a whole. (source 10). It also seems like their marketing push as accessibility devices began last year (source 11).
But to add even more into the nonsense, Meta is now toying around with adding a "limit" to the functionality of their glasses unless their users pay for more access (source 12). AND, as stated above, Meta has officially added facial recognition code in their glasses and only admitted it after being called out, which is basically the death of privacy as we know it (source 13, source 14, source 15). And oh look another lawsuit because of it (source 16) THAT THEY LOST (source 17)!
Long story short: I don't begrudge someone using them as a disability aid overall, but ultimately both their privacy and other people's privacy are being disregarded by Meta and that is not and should not be acceptable by any means.
I understand there is no ethical consumption under capitalism but there is a level of personal responsibility someone has to take when using them if they truly truly need them, such as opting out of sharing information, not filming strangers without permission, not posting footage of strangers online, opting out of facial recognition if possible, etc.
Disabled people deserve assistive technology AND privacy rights, and Meta is not the solution.

It really is crazy the way anybody ever managed to push the idea that there is a real, tangible "transmasc erasure". If you look up books, comics, movies, plays, etc. starring a trans protagonist pretty much every single time they are going to be trans masc or TME nonbinary. You have some notable exceptions like Nevada, or Detransition Baby, but pretty much every one of those is going to be BY a transfem author telling our own stories. But they will swear that transmascs are being erased in media compared to trans women so you will go through a list of the top 50 trans books and top 10 trans films for pride and the top 8 queer comic lists and they will pretty much all be about a transmasc experience and you will be like. okay so I reviewed 60 pieces of media and 5 of them were interested in representing trans women and the rest were transmasc or TME nb what do you mean by erasure and they will look you in the eye and say with a full chest "I am jealous that you guys get more blood libel than us"
And pointing this out gets you treated as if your insane. They all literally claim the opposite is happening, and point to the same like 6 transfem characters from the last 20 years as proof of it — like Sense 8 and Orange is the New Black.
It's literally that study that found men think a room is mostly women when its only like 30% women, or something like that.
It's literally the exact same thing as what it currently happening with god of war and has been happening since gamergate. Men mistake representation of women for the erasure of men, all parties being trans does not change this dynamic.
Transmascs are not forgetting their representation, they are using the scant representation of transfems which does exist as evidence that they are being erased. The implicit belief that everything should always be about men is the same one which causes them to make every post on tumblr about themselves.
I think so many of you just want to eat us.

To be able to think of this world in terms of literature, fiction, TV shows and other such media, is a privilege. To come across articles of people suffering under rising temperatures, and for your head to immediately go to a writing assignment; that's a privilege.
There is something so greedy and predatory about jumping onto a whole population's suffering and being giddy at the thought of using that knowledge as building blocks of your fictional world. You even have the audacity to say it out loud. You want to eat us, and then regurgitate us out on the page as some kind of liberal representation of a mass of people you don't really think have interiority like the other REAL human beings around you. Even the industry you so hope to impress, that has reach and sway internationally, is more accessible to you than the rest of us. This industry now also deems you to be more human than us, because apparently we sound too much like a machine. So what we are left with is little to no access, and a regurgitated mess of ourselves to be consumed by others like you.

I worked in a supermarket for 7 years and I don't think I can understate just how much cleaning you had to do for it to look clean (it very often where not in the places you aren't supposed to see)
True for food service, retail establishments, gyms, outdoor areas, schools, religious buildings, office buildings, hospitals and medical buildings, etc. People usually only notice when a space is NOT clean, meanwhile every time a space is clean it’s only because of the diligent work of janitors, maintenance staff, custodians, parks workers, or volunteers.
