Worship or Discipleship?
I was at a meeting with a group of church leaders recently and we got into a debate about children in worship. I started to hear all the arguments on either side, they don't know how to be in worship if they don't stay, some kids hit 18 and they've never had to sit through worship, we do things that engage the kids, we give them a candle, we have a workbook, there are objects for them to play with, research says that for every year of your age, you can sit and listen to a sermon for a minute(I argue with this because I am 37 and I don't want to sit for a 37 minute sermon, I also argue that a 5 year old is never sitting for 5 minutes in a classroom just listening, but that's off topic.) We were going around and around. I know that worship is faith forming, but I'm also a mom who gets nothing out of a worship service if I have my kids with me, no matter how engaged they are, I am not engaged. I am watching them. I am making sure they behave, listen, do what they are supposed to be doing. And then I got to the heart of why this conversation was bothering me so much. Someone at one point said over and over again, "our kids aren't learning how to be in worship, they need to learn how to be in worship." And I had to stop myself before I said what I was thinking, "I don't necessarily want my kids to learn how to be in worship, I want my kids to learn how to be disciples." And that's when it hit me, we fundamentally didn't agree on what it meant to be the church. Is the church about being in worship or is the church about being disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world? I am a pastor and I LOVE (well-done) worship. But I am not so sure that worship is going to look like what it is now in 10 years, or for that matter in 5 years or even 3 years. I don't necessarily believe that my children need to learn how to be in worship. I think they need to learn how to glorify and praise God, I think they need to learn how to serve in the name of Jesus Christ, I think they need to understand the stories of their faith and hear those stories in various ways(perhaps worship) and use them to shape and form their lives. I think my children need to learn how to be disciples of Jesus Christ, but I don't think they need to learn how to be in worship. This may not make me popular, especially amongst my colleagues, but I think the sit and listen and sing a few songs style of worship is not going to be around forever. I hope for all those different kinds of learners out there that we begin to find new and fresh ways to engage in the word and example of Jesus Christ, and I hope and I pray that we aren't teaching people how to be in worship. I hope that we are teaching children, youth, young adults and adults how to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Learning how to be in worship is not going to change the world. Engaging in the ways and practices of Jesus, following his example and sharing God's love with the world, that will change the world. So I hope we learn how to be disciples, changing the world in more ways than we could ever imagine.
