the 2025 loss was an emotional wound. three championship points against carlos, gone. psychologically, that’s the perfect setup for rumination: the endless “what if?” loop that keeps athletes replaying the same moment over and over again. the 2026 loss was different. it challenged something even more fundamental: his trust in his own body. something like that can make any athlete wonder whether it could happen again. for someone whose game is built on reliability and physical control, that’s a very different kind of challenge from simply losing a match. what also stood out to me was that he never really externalised it. he said the weather was fine and that it was simply him that day. taking ownership like that isn’t easy because it puts the responsibility back on you, but it also means the solution stays with you instead of being left to circumstances you can’t control.

his response afterwards also resembles many of the coping strategies associate with resilience. first comes the speed of his emotional recovery. darren has said that the day after a bad loss, jannik is already calling the team asking, “what are we doing? what’s the plan?” that’s the opposite of rumination. then comes problem-solving instead of avoidance. he openly acknowledged that he needed to recover mentally as well as physically, underwent medical testing, adjusted his heat-management routines and arrived in london 12 days early. in other words, he kept converting an uncontrollable event into a series of controllable actions. you can’t change what happened in paris. you can change how you prepare for the next tournament, so that’s where he deliberately shifts his attention.

what also helps, i think, is the way he thinks about winning and losing. he often says that he plays for himself, not for records or other people’s expectations. after winning wimbledon, he said that not winning a slam isn’t a failure, that his five major titles are only five days out of thousands of days in his life, and that even losing the final would still have been a good day. i think that says a lot about how he views success. winning matters to him, of course, but it doesn’t seem to define his sense of self. because of that, defeats don’t come across as identity crises , bu become part of the process of getting better instead. maybe that’s also why paris didn’t seem to leave the kind of lasting scars you might expect. where a lot of athletes might experience a loss like that as “i’m failing,” he seems to experience it more as “that day didn’t go the way i wanted.”

and there’s also the mechanism he seems to rely on under pressure, which is process focus. after the final, when he was asked how he had managed both to stay so composed on serve and to respond after paris, he almost seemed uncomfortable giving some grand explanation. instead he smiled, said “i don’t know,” and immediately returned to process: staying in the moment, trusting the work, and the long days of preparation. when talking about achievements, he almost always speaks in terms of “we,” giving credit to the preparation he and his team have put in together. there’s a confidence in the people around him, too, and with good reason. he’s surrounded by some of the best coaches and specialists in the sport, and he trusts both their expertise and the work they do together. his confidence doesn’t seem to come from convincing himself that everything will work out. it comes from trusting a process that has already been tested countless times. in the biggest moments, there isn’t much left to overthink because the preparation has already done the believing for him.

the timeline

the thing that is most striking is the timeline. think about where this serve was in september 2025 with 48% first serves in a us open final, a toss that had been drifting for weeks, the one shot in his game that was actively costing him. and now look at it. simone deserves all the credit in the world for the diagnosis and the rebuild, and jannik deserves just as much for how fast he internalised it. changing a serve motion mid-season, at world no. 1, with everything to lose, and having it fully settled within months is not normal. it takes time for players to trust a rebuilt serve. he did it in one off-season.

the clay test

clay is where the april post ended, so let’s pick up there. the spring swing was the real referendum on the new motion, because clay is supposed to neutralise serving. instead winning monte carlo, madrid and rome with only three sets dropped across the entire run, and a season hold rate of 94.2% going into paris. for context, that’s better than john isner’s best-ever season (93.8% in 2018). jannik sinner, on a season built partly on clay, out-holding the biggest server of a generation. sit with that.

then roland garros. we all know what happened in paris. moving on.

wimbledon, no warm-ups, no problem

he arrived at the championships without a single grass tune-up event. and he still produced the best serving fortnight of his career: 129 aces through seven matches — 18.4 per match — winning almost 85% of first-serve points across the tournament, and a semifinal against djokovic where he lost four points on serve in the entire first set. in the final against zverev he landed 64% of first serves, won 80,5% of the points behind them, hit 16 aces, put in 96% of his second serves, and faced exactly one break point in almost four hours. what he got in as reward was second consecutive wimbledon title.

2025 vs 2026, same tournament

this is the comparison that makes the whole project legible, because it’s the same courts, the same balls, one year apart:

• aces per match: 5.9 in 2025 → 18.8 in 2026. that is not improvement, that is a different species of serve.

• first-serve points won: 80.6% → 84.6%.

• the finals: 8 aces vs carlos in 2025 (with zero — zero! — in the first two sets, he had to find the serve mid-match), versus 16 aces spread evenly across the whole final in 2026, plus better numbers on first serve with only 2 double fault.

the second serve tells a different story. at wimbledon 2025, jannik won 62.6% of second-serve points on average across the tournament. in 2026, that dropped to 55.9%. the final showed 60% in 2025 vs 65.3% in 2026, but that masks the inconsistency: across the tournament, the second serve ranged from 37% to 75.9% in 2025, and 37% to 65.3% in 2026. the trade-off is real and ongoing.

the serve, part two: what’s automatic now

everything from the post-us open rebuild is now automatic rather than maintained. the slower opening tempo — jannik himself said the beginning used to be too fast — is his baseline rhythm now, even on big points, which is the real tell. the toss lives back over his head instead of out front, giving him one identical toss window for the flat, the slice, and the kick, which is why returners keep guessing wrong. and simone revealed after the final yesterday a very interesting detail: the foot plant. before, the back foot would arrive in the step-up and almost stop, like braking. now it arrives, plants, and pushes in one continuous flow. no dead stop between loading the legs and firing them. he also said something remarkable: even after ten days off, jannik now finds the serving rhythm immediately. that’s what “settled” means.

the biomechanics of it

during rome, the atp’s biomechanics overlay put actual numbers on all of this and they’re the physics underneath every stat above.

three numbers: a knee bend of about 95 degrees at the deepest point of the loading phase, a vertical leg drive of 1.61 m/s versus a draw average of 1.34, and an average first-serve speed of 201 km/h versus the draw’s 191.

why does leg drive matter? because the serve is a chain, and the legs are the first and biggest link where the lower body and trunk produce over half the total energy in an elite serve. that 95-degree knee bend is the energy being stored, like compressing a spring. the 1.61 m/s is the spring releasing with 20% more vertical push than the rest of the draw. and here’s the connection to what simone changed: a bend that deep is only usable if the rhythm gives you time to reach it, and the stored energy only transfers if there’s no pause between loading and pushing. slower start → full 95° compression → continuous foot plant → 1.61 m/s straight up through a toss that now sits directly overhead. that’s the whole rebuild in one causal chain. the power comes from the ground now, not the arm and is a reason why he can serve like this for a 70-match season without his shoulder filing a complaint.

the second serve is a work in progress

jannik’s second-serve points won dipped to 57.8% in early 2026 as he recalibrated the kick serve around the new toss and contact point. at wimbledon, it remained a genuine weakness — averaging 55.9% across the tournament, down from 62.6% in 2025, with wild swings from 37% to 65.3% across matches. the second serve is still homework. still in progress. but for now it’s parked.

because the first serve is doing enough of the heavy lifting. when you’re landing 84.6% of first serves and winning 84.6% of the points behind them, and firing 18.8 aces per match, the second serve weakness doesn’t cost you tournaments. it costs you nothing. that’s what the numbers show. he won wimbledon without fixing it, won the sunshine double without fixing it, carried a 30-match winning streak without fixing it.

so the work on the second serve is real, but it’s deferred. simone and jannik know it’s there. they’ll get to it. for now, the priority is keeping the first serve locked in and keeping the winning machine running. that’s trusting the process in its most honest form: not waiting for perfection, not solving every problem at once, just competing while knowing the work isn’t finished and there is still something to be concentrating on.
