Sometimes I imagine Nerdanel as a blind person, and that’s why she became a sculptor.

In particular, I am thinking about Lina Po (Poline Gorenstein, 1899-1948). She was a ballerina and lost her sight in 1934 after an illness. She loved drawing and became a sculptor. Lina made statues of dancers, women and portraits of famous people. 

“A blind sculptor’s works are more real than her living sisters. I mean, both her sisters are amazing people, but anyway, her relatives for me feel less real than her works, created by the joy of overcoming the illness and death. That’s why an artist’s work may seem more real than our own lives, because here, inside the artist’s atelier, we know the cost of her work. She never wanted to even hear people calling her “blind”: she was able to see the things the wanted to see inside herself, and she was living and breathing to make her vision visible for all” --
