One morning I saw Lawrence with a woman. She was working in the vegetable garden. I went there and asked ‘Haven’t you say we cannot afford laborers?’

'She’s not a laborer, but a friend’ He replied.

'Pleased to finally meet you Florence, my name is Victoria and I work as a midwife in the village. Sometimes I help Lawrence with the farm.’ Victoria’s face was nice and sincere, her voice sweet. 

Lawrence seemed so relaxed beside her. I felt uncomfortable. Was it jealousy?

I sold some kale today and the hens have begun growing their pin feathers. Did you know chicken eggs only take twenty-one days to hatch? I’ve found your old almanacs in the back of the bookcase.  That’s all I’ve been doing lately, reading and reading. How to make compost, which beetles have been eating my flowers, how much longer I have until everything withers away… It’s grown cold here, in all senses. Simultaneously caught in a slog and speeding through calendar days. It’s nearly October, and the change has crept up on me quicker than I had anticipated. But I do know one thing for sure. I am not as alone as I once thought…
