H/D have been bragging about how great their chemistry is since they first teamed up. Its kind of annoying but not a new strategy? They literally said their free dance last season was about a couple having an affair
Itās not that I think itās anything new, but to be quoted on a cover of a magazine as sayingĀ āOur Chemistry Is Fireā is more than a little extra. The need to rethink the way they sell themselves imo, for their own good.
okay I totally agree - stop telling everybody that you have chemistry, if you do, itās gonna be obvious on its own. now Iām annoyed because theyāre telling everybody what their trademark should be (and true, chemistry is going to be their most realistic asset against PC. although HD also have far better skating skills, but we know that doesnāt matter in ice dance anymore) and I just think what they do on the ice should make it clear by itself. (it also sounds a bit cocky but thatās a personal pet hate, so maybe Iām the only one whoĀ has an issue with that)Ā

A Little Storytime: GPF 2018
Once upon a time, on a normal day at warm-upsā¦
Perfect by Ed Sheeran playsā¦ā¤ļø
And she loses itā¦š„°
She starts singing along, looking at him like he is her worldā¦āØ
And that, kids, is how your father got together with your motherā¦ā¤ļø
š¶ āCause we were just kids when we fell in loveā š¶
āMy Rockā ā¤ļø
Hawayek/Bakerās FD is like if you put every Gadbois FD in a blenderĀ
Code for: levels donāt matter any more in ice dance, GOE is worth more, so who cares about levels.Ā
Ice dance has totally lost me at this point. Like is it even pretending to be a sport?Ā
š¤
Ok, Iām kind of torn right now because I love H/D and I loved their performances in the GPF, but I donāt know a lot about scoring yet and technicalities, so itās interesting that so many people say that they didnāt deserve the win. And this quote by Zach is very telling. If this is really where ice dance is going, then it is kind of disappointing. So Iām kind of torn between being happy that my favorite team won and being disappointed that they are concentrating more on performance and less on technical elements, and that they won based mostly on GOE.
I think itās fine to enjoy their skating, and be glad they put out a good performance - I misinterpreted his quote at first, because H/D tend to let their heads get in the way of their skating, sometimes, and I thought, they finally decided to just go out there and do it!Ā Good for them!Ā But the reality is, when you actually look at the protocols, H/D were in LAST place for base value (42.83).
To think about that in some more concrete terms, the team that earned the lowest overall score for the FD, had a base value of 44.58, so really, there was only about 1.5 points difference.Ā And yet there was a huge difference in overall score ā 124.82 vs 111.39.Ā Over 10 points difference alone in GOE and PCS.
Now, Iām not going to argue that HD didnāt deserve to win.Ā Their skating is beautiful, and (sorry) Z/G are, especially in comparison, unpolished and rough.Ā But as a sport, things like getting a level 2 on a spin (which usually means silly mistakes like not having enough rotations) ought to count a lot more than they are right now, as a whole.Ā
It annoys me more because weāre in a season where all the teams are getting dreadful levels on the tango romantica patterns but itās not affecting the scores.Ā
For example, in previous season, if Hubbell/Donohue had scored level 1 and level 2 on the pattern dance at the Grand Prix Final, it would be panic stations and a bad scoreā¦. notĀ āwe came here not being afraid of losing levelsā and a seasons best RD score.Ā
I just donāt like this judging system because it could do serious damage to the reputation of ice dance.Ā
I just feel like Iām taking crazing pills.Ā
GETTING LOW LEVELS IS THE ICE DANCE EQUIVALENT OF A MISTAKE. You donāt need to actually fall for it to be a mistake.Ā
What @swizzlesandtwizzles said.
Iāve been saying this for a while but hereās my controversial opinion of the day: remove ice dance from the Olympics and tell them that until they get their s**t together, they canāt come back in. I love ice dance and the dancers that would miss their chance at an Olympics, but is there even a point in competing when your actual skating and dancing on ice skills have no impact on your scores?Ā
Boy, I didnāt expect to get this angry about dance scores in an event where neither VM nor PC were participating.Ā

Episode 8: Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir
May 23, 2016
The Inside Edge is where I take you behind-the-scenes of the @SkatingPj Podcast. It is no secret that I have known these two for a very long time. I am a big fan not only of them as skaters, but as people. This podcast had been in the works for some time and I was delighted to grab a quick half hour with 2010 Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir before they headed off to the rink for the Stars on Ice 2016 Toronto show.
A lot has changed since they first started skating together 19 years ago. They have come a long way from skating together as children to national and international titles and acclaim. Many would have thought that Tessa and Scott would have nothing more to accomplish in the amateur ranks of skating. Part of this podcast is spent talking about their return to competition and their new training locale in Montreal with Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon.
They have never really left the ice and skating in shows during their time away takes all kinds of training. In addition to their return to the amateur ranks, they have been involved in other projects as well, such as Tessaās launching of a new a jewellery line.
This podcast is a great snapshot of where and what Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have been up to. Connect with Tessa and Scott on social media.Ā
