percy weasley stan 😈

i saw a tumblr post about percy potentially being a slytherin and it reignited my motivation to post about this so take a random unstructured rant about a potential scenario in which percy gets sorted into slytherin (i refuse to believe he wasnt considered for slytherin by the hat in canon)

(i apologise that half of this is just me yapping about percy’s dynamic with the twins but they’re so fun to pick apart the complexities for..)

first and foremost: how does the family react?

i don’t ever think they’d hate him or even dislike him, but i like to believe that it further alienates percy from the family and creates distance (even if some is unintentional and borne of miscommunication) between him and his family.

this would probably be best demonstrated by the twins, who would become worse as a result. this sense of self-superiority that is attached to being a slytherin would only affirm this idea in their heads especially that percy must believe he’s better than everyone else, but i feel it would also feel like percy is making distance and percy is leaving them behind. the twins act out for attention, and when they feel wronged or deprived or are rebuffed when attempting to catch someone’s attention (such as with percy) they escalate. i doubt the twins would even want to remotely acknowledge that percy being sorted elsewhere makes them feel somewhat abandoned (and ive seen this interpretation of hogwarts causing a further shift because when percy is no longer around at home to nag them for that summer, it doesn’t sit well), and instead of picking apart the tumult of anger, sadness and confusion it would externalise in vindictive pranking instead. this further links to why i think percy leaving in the rift affected the twins the way it did — percy represents a lack of change, percy represents stability. the way in which percy is boxed into a specific role by his family and expected to stay within it (and is shamed by his siblings and peers for his openness or stepping outside of it, making him retreat further into facade) makes him predictable in their eyes to the point where even if percy demonstrates behaviour that contrasts their preconceived notions of him, they are able to completely somehow brush it off. (his siblings denying that percy cares for them when he has literally shown countless times he has only ever wanted them safe)

as a result, the twins would become crueller without meaning to toward percy, creating a further rift between them. this is only worsened in which percy’s response to this is obviously thinking the twins must hate him that much, so he distances more from them, becomes more detached and colder and suppresses parts of himself to protect his own feelings, which in turn signals to the twins that percy is acting above them again and he seems to hate them and everything they stand for (i think in some way the pranking as much as it is a shield is also part of who the twins are, and the twins don’t deal well with that being rejected because i think in some weird way they do want validation from percy because everyone is always asked why they can’t behave like him by their parents and also because percy appears so emotionally distant (which is actually just a consequence of constant mocking making any ‘vulnerable’ emotion such as showing excitement (also to avoid the mockery cutting too deep rather than into a facade that at least isn’t mocking his ‘true self’) or too much emotional investment in praise makes him suppress these reactions but also makes him feel they’re unwanted).)

this would eventually result (at least in my head) in a very antagonistic and petty relationship between the twins and percy where they genuinely bring out the worst in eachother. (i think in some way percy makes the twins feel exposed and vice versa and that unsettles them. i think in canon this is present to a lesser degree that percy’s lack of receptiveness to the twin’s antics means they cannot hide behind their humour. on percy’s side, the twins disrupt his composure and bring out the suppressed bitterness and jadedness he feels at his personality being rejected by his own family (and even peers), the twins are almost a physical representation and reminder of the constant mockery and dismissal he is subjected to in his daily life. additionally, i fully believe part of the twins and percy’s dynamic is their jealousy at eachother and their inability to fathom that it might also be the other way round at the same time.) percy becomes bitter and eventually is just as scathing back (because again, they would be much crueller). they’re constantly at eachothers throats (insults, fights, pranks and petty revenges that have a much crueller and harsher edge) but in actuality they do love eachother but both sides believe that the other must hate them. basically they’re extremely dysfunctional and refuse to admit to themselves that they care and are deeply protective of eachother.

what about everyone else?

bill — shocked at first but accepts the situation quickly without problem. he’s the oldest and i think he feels very responsible for percy and would worry about him endlessly, percy is very resistant to coddling though and it pisses bill off. definitely has threatened people here and there and would beat up anyone who tries to hurt any of his siblings.

charlie — i genuinely don’t think it would change his mind about percy in the slightest, thats still his little brother. i think he would be outwardly very supportive and tell percy so, however, after that i feel he would not quite know what to do with this and accidentally distance and avoid percy as a result (because i think charlie’s response to discomfort is honestly avoidance, akin to him moving all the way to Romania, so that response would be present here) which again makes percy think “fuucccckk charlie hates me what do i do” and eventually they solve the miscommunication relatively quickly (not before the angsting though) . percy appreciates charlie the most because his behaviour in regards to him don’t change at all (making him feel less alienated), he’s still charlie.

ron — already there’s this sense of brushing percy off and this sense of distance with percy being so much older than him and being compared to him in childhood. his slytherin prejudice is still there (he’s stubborn like that), and i think it definitely makes their relationship more distant, but ron can still rely on the fact that percy seems to care somewhat (this is in his eyes, in actuality percy cares a LOT he just appears distant). i think there would also be envy about more shoes to fill, because percy already seems to be praised by their parents and now he’s standing out by being in SLYTHERIN, making ron feel even more invisible and he’s now gravitating away from percy on instinct.

ginny — this is more difficult. i think ginny would be much too young to care, and percy already has a massive part in looking after her (and would continue to do so to be honest even though distance does happen as percy becomes more occupied with school), so i don’t think it would change her perception much. when she gets to hogwarts, i still don’t think she’d like most slytherins, but she couldnt give less of a fuck that her older brother is one. however, after the whole chamber of secrets i could definitely see it making her subconsciously suspicious or wary of her brother as a result of him being a slytherin and causing distance in some way. (which oucchhh. that would hurt percy badly even if he understands that trauma isn’t logical.)

molly — would be shocked but i don’t think she’d ever voice the short negative reaction to percy. she wouldn’t love him any less. (however, i think there would still be an element of subconscious bias that causes her to doubt her own son because she still has a negative attitude towards slytherins, and her son being one won’t magically erase that she raised her children on these ideals that she believes herself.)

arthur — this is DIFFICULT. right, i doubt it would affect his love for percy at all. however it would make him more inclined to be subconsciously distrustful of percy and his motivations ableit quietly (because lets not forget he implicitly assumed percy would agree to spy on the family when he was in sorted in Gryffindor in canon.) arthur’s distance with percy may be interpreted by percy as rejection, and i think arthur may feel inadequate and bitter because percy is around so many slytherins with a lot of money and thus may not make an effort to engage percy about them like he does with the rest of his children.

okay! now onto how i think percy would develop differently in slytherin.

first and foremost, i don’t think it would make him sympathetic to pureblood ideals even when surrounded with rhetoric. percy is a critical thinker at heart and he would never see the logic in it.

i think percy would be bullied. (honestly, i wouldn’t be surprised if he was in canon by his peers because he was unintentionally bullied by his own family in canon anyhow which is why he has so much suppressed anger.) he’s from a poorer background, and he’s from a family that outwardly seem to hate slytherins. he’s outcasted at first, and i think a lot of the bullying may come from less progressive peers in the upper years who see percy as an easy target, rather than people in his own yeargroup. i think percy would be able to more clearly see corruption in the ministry and maybe even with rules when the parentage and reputations of those who bully him seem to make them exempt from consequences for the system (which leads onto how i think slytherin percy is more likely to play in between the rules) i don’t think percy would tell bill and charlie because he wants to be able to handle himself, and it would make him feel embarrassed because his brothers are so popular at school. percy realises early that he has to take matters into his own hands. hence, percy begins to realise that the whole motto of “not getting caught” really is about, and begins to embrace it rather than reject it. percy is logical and strategic and i fully believe that applies to his revenge plots. eventually, he does prove himself among his peers and begins to make friends with housemates (it would be fun for percy to have this reputation of following the rules but also his own housemates knowing damn well that he shouldnt be underestimated or messed with), which allows him to become more confident in socialising and branch out to other houses. 

percy’s personality would be a different way of shielding himself than in canon. he’s still just as nerdy, but rather than rigid and upright, he slowly becomes more sarcastic, mocking and witty in his own speech. percy is still just as or even more guarded than in canon, his bitterness and jadedness slipping out in derision masquerading as politeness, an afforded plausible deniability where he would probably rather punch someone. he works within the rules, but he is more lenient in places, but much more petty and rigid with those he dislikes. it would be fun if he smiled a lot to keep his composure, but also to play into a playful side. his reputation among his year would eventually be the charismatic prefect (or eventually head boy) who’s kind of an ass but also a funny guy— i feel he would be fairly popular.

percy would be much less trusting of the ministry (he’s seen what his peer’s parents are capable of), more jaded, even more of a hater of dumbledore (because he does not take bullshit lightly and he wants that man DEAD), more manipulative and chill with blackmail, and capable of fighting someone physically.

it would be fun if he was much more of a gossip too (blackmail material) —>maybe with gemma farley?

another thing i think would be fun is for percy to be friends with marcus. sorted into gryffindor, he’s associated to be oliver’s friend (and it’s canon in my heart), so why not on the flip side being oliver’s rival’s friend? marcus definitely messed with percy in the younger years, but their relationship is definitely strange in the sense that you can’t tell if they’re friends or if they hate eachother. percy giving marcus dazai’s chuuya treatment and calling him his dog and ragebaiting him the whole time would be funny (part of why percy had to learn how to fight physically because he has to survive tussling with marcus). they’re also pretty chill at times and protect eachother so nobody really knows.

right hear me out on this.. time travel fic but its eddie munson and jason carver who time travel.

HEAR ME OUT. 

it would make much more sense for this to be s4, so im going off of that (but s1 would be cool as hell too.)

so you may be asking why jason?

the answer is i think it would be interesting to explore a character that is thrown back into the past with the beginning of a changed outlook because jason died angry and grieving before anything could ever actualise in his head.

a fun thing ive seen in fanfiction is the exploration of jason’s religious beliefs, being raised likely heavily christian (thus his sensitivity to the satantic craze) and this is a really interesting way to do it, because the upside down upends his world view and shatters his anchor to reality (his religion). 

it would be incredibly fun to play around with religious trauma and thus religious guilt when jason is forced to question his own beliefs. not only can you not reconcile christianity with the existence of the upside down (or hell) and those monsters, but there is no way he can justify having TURNED BACK TIME to himself. he would likely see himself as delusional, maybe even possessed, and he would likely share the same attitude towards his own trauma. this drives him away from most of his previously trusted figures, for fear of being outcasted. 

a time travel fic is no good without the character having to reckon with the trauma of the future they’ve come from— jason has LOST his girlfriend (and likely feels extremely guilty for it to the point where his desire for revenge and his relentless pursual of it is a potential externalisation of his inability to healthily acknowledge his own emotions (religion often pinpoints blame of negative feelings to demons and oneself) and thus fixating to run away from his feelings (and stopping him from properly grieving)), now has to contend with the fact that he persecuted and attacked a potentially innocent person (eddie, lucas etc), being quite literally RIPPED APART in a pocket dimension you have no context for what it is and if it even exists (again, i think it would be interesting to capture the experience of his death through a religious lens where jason does not have the context of the upside down.)  -> the idea of him having a scar from his death there or phantom pain would be fun. it was likely EXTREMELY painful.

so, its safe to say Jason would likely come out of that with some form of PTSD. however, mental health was deeply stigmatised in the 80s, and even more stigmatised in religion. jason may associate his doubt in his own faith with the cause of his traumatic responses as he ‘obviously’ just isn’t praying enough, isn’t believing hard enough. he internalises all of the blame to be something wrong with HIM. this could externalise as outwardly erratic and cruel behaviour, or as recklessness or purposely punishing himself. it would be interesting to explore how Jason externalises these responses. (i would be inclined to explore things such as compulsions and intrusive thoughts since they’re very intertwined with religious trauma.) 

another thing to mention when it comes to a personal interpretation of Jason, but it would be interesting to explore the authority figures in his life— the church, his parents. with Jason’s parents, i’d characterise them as deeply evangelical and excessively rejective of anything that isn’t the norm, with a controlling nature and obsessive need to look perfect in front of others. physical and mental punishments are the norm, but they’re almost glamorised and romanticised in their household as ways of “purification”— violence that is followed with a breath of soft praise. his parents are definitely dysfunctional in their marriage, and they hold onto looking like the perfect christians and project hobbies and futures onto jason to compensate. however, physical abuse is not common in jason’s household, as it’s so ingrained into him to behave that he viscerally recoils and fears breaking the rules and disappointing his parents. they often misuse religious texts to benefit their narrative, no matter how corrupt it may be. -> this is just a perception, whats great about jason is his parents are a blank slate. (another idea ive had is jason’s mother viewing jason as having ruined her and her marriage (maybe a warped idea of all humans being born sinful?? or framing her post partum depression (which she never acknowledged she had) as demonic presence within her child, which makes her behaviour go back and forth from avoidance and erratic cruelty to treating him like a “proper loving christian mother”) for his dad, the only route i wouldnt go is infidelity because it feels a little cliche. but.. maybe an eventual discovery of his father actually having deep internalised homophobia and previously having had a gay relationship would be interesting. him being somewhat detached from his family emotionally would be fun.)

another point of authority would be the church. i have no clear cut preference on how to explore it, but maybe a reverend or vicar being someone Jason looked up to before or trusted in some way, that appears to be “better” but reveals his prejudice and selfishness in subtler ways.

overall, i want the sense that Jason is surrounded by people, but is incredibly isolated with nobody to talk to about this. he’s suffering from mental repercussions of trauma (i think panic attacks would be interesting yes, but i would LOVE to see something to do with hallucinations, especially surrounding seeing Chrissy and the visceral horror and guilt over forgetting she’s real sometimes and struggling to differ between her ghost and the real her.) -> and his friends, his team and his girlfriend notice!! there’s not much they can do, but they do worry. (playing around with the dynamic with each of his team members would be fun as well, but they’re all friendly at minimum. give em personalities!!)

when it comes to the topic of eddie and the chase, i think it would be interesting for jason to instinctively want to hurt him when seeing him again for the first time and only then feeling a sense of disgust as guilt, because he SAW that thing, what if it wasn’t eddie’s fault? (again, he’s additionally beginning to distance himself from faith as well, so he’s becoming slightly less faith driven in his thought processes, at least towards others, but he does instinctively default to it when he’s unsure of what to think or do.)

i think it would be interesting for eddie to view this as some sort of high-induced dream, the only reason he approaches jason when he notices him staring at him with a look of abject horror and asking him if it got him too (which then leads to jason skipping school and dragging eddie to talk with him, which promptly snaps eddie out of it and affirms this is REAL (and affirms to jason that he wasn’t going crazy after all.))

i think it would be fun if jason had a whole lot of things he wanted to say and ends up blurting out “was it you” and when asked clarifying if eddie truly killed her, eddie obviously harshly justifies himself fully expecting jason to blow at him (because jesus fuck he watched her die and he is tired of this shit and he doesnt want the only other guy stuck here chasing him to death again) but jason just breaks down and apologises instead 

eddie is lowkey unsure about what to do because whatthefuck but i think the fact that jason is in such a state (because he’s so overcome with grief, relief, regret and hatred) and that he looks so vulnerable would make it hard for eddie to leave (eddie also explains the upside down and they both decide they gotta help out)

anyways what ensues is eddie and jason slowly becoming super close (because they’re the only ones who GET what dying angry is like) and becoming slightly codependent pseudo-brothers with the help of trauma bonding (obviously helping change things along the way while eddie helps jason through his religious crisis.) they’re just fluffy together and eddie becomes pretty protective over jason as well and has a soft spot because that’s his little brother man. (it takes em forever to admit it but jason definitely slips up and calls eddie his brother and turns bright red and eddie makes fun of him but he’s lowkey close to tears)

because i think it would be funny if jason just kinda decided “yeah thats my big brother” and now just point blank refuses to let people mess with eddie (bamf jason would be SO fun, let him swing at someone he has so much rage)

theyre bantering and people think jason is just gonna kill or beat up eddie but he lets eddie noogie him and ruffle his hair and just grumbles about it??? 

AND AND here’s the main thing right: hellfire are good friends (i’d lowkey be tempted to make a few more member ocs like ive seen in fanfic because hell yeah and also we need female members) so they’re worried, confused, horrified. —> hellfire having a sesh and jason lowk crashing it because he wants a soda from eddie’s fridge because his parents don’t let him buy anything fizzy

“eddie why is he in here, HOW DID HE GET IN HERE??”

jason has friends and the basketball team (keep in mind in canon they agree to go chase eddie across town with him, and adults in general seem to like jason? (it would be SO fun to play around with jason having a reputation for getting into little trouble and being so polite (cough cough bullying aside) and now he’s hanging with a drug dealer) so now they’re also worried, confused, horrified. i am a truther of jason and the basketball team being pretty friendly (he develops a soft spot for lucas too trusttt) -> however, i would still keep them on the outside of the upside down stuff lowk.

like outsider perspective or people just witnessing the brotherism would be SO FUN. (and you know damn well eddie teases jason like crazy.)

also just having the general stranger things cast and other students see this random ass pair together and actually getting along would be funny as hell.

eddie also just introducing jason’s sheltered ass to movies and other types of music would be so fun (basically jason getting to know himself better.) also physical affection because jason lowk a bit touch starved. i also don’t think jason is really prejudiced, however he’s still uniformed about lots of this stuff (and also raised on extremely offensive rhetoric), but he learns and gets better trust.

it would also just be funny if jason used his good reputation to help eddie out

also wayne lowk suspicious and hateful at first but he comes around (especially when jason falls asleep on top of eddie after comforting him.)

also it would be so cute for jason to just buy eddie expensive nerd shit because he has the money and if it isnt in his house his parents wont find out he bought it

percy as sanemi and neville as genya!!

okok so, for how this would slot into canon, i think a more interesting approach is them living normally, maybe having dreams, and slightly before harry’s first year, maybe even at the station, they remember who they used to be (this way, there’s a lot more fun to be had with the personality switch and crisis, as well as the background cast because we gonna give percy’s yeargroup and friends as well as fred and george’s some love)

so.. percy as sanemi!

percy still having marechi blood would be super fun except it would translate into magical creatures (but i feel as if the urge would present differently), and maybe even since childhood, maybe having had a run in with a magical creature, getting injured, and the creature being stunned by the blood but the dots never being connected for one reason or other.

percy’s personality is reframed through sanemi, he’ll definitely keep his habits, his drive and his organisation, however he definitely has sanemi’s violent temper and more brash mannerisms, and he is much less likely to tolerate disrespect. (this makes him an extremely formidable prefect)

something fun to play with is how percy’s shift in personality changes his dynamics with people, especially his family, as he’s still viewing their actions through the same lens he does. (i.e the twins getting thrown off by percy’s responses and new personality and his weird connection with neville and how he seems to look after harry and the first years. the pranking dynamic they use has now been shifted, and the twins feel thrown aside (again, i think it would be interesting to play with the idea of percy’s obliviousness as sanemi misjudges the harm his actions have on his relationship with genya, although percy would later be pushed in the right direction in regards to the rest of his family.) ron additionally being thrown off would be fun because percy is acting weird and involved now. and dont get me started on eventual bill and charlie because theyre the older brothers with a protective streak and dangerous jobs, they do not play around.)

obviously, the identity crisis is still sort of there at figuring out just how much he is of each person, and feeling like he’s losing parts of himself, however there is still almost that instantaneous flip of personality/perception even if some parts conflict.

i think breathing styles would lower the stakes too much, however, obviously sanemi’s swordmanship and fighting skills and abilities translate.

another fun thing would be the guilt of the way he interacts with his father and trying not to see sanemi’s but percy’s, and him sort of having to work through that. (dw chat, arthur is oblivious but he’s a good dad, they bond eventually and its this that actually spurs him into action when it comes to connecting with his kids better (also because percy shouts at him because what the helly was that in blaming ginny after book 2))

loving his mother deeply but getting nightmares of him killing her, feeling like he’s a danger to her and he’s not deserving of this love when he killed his mother before.

fred and george lowk becoming protective as hell over percy is super fun as well.

ron lowk preoccupied with other things, but he’s plotting.

genya as neville!!! he’s growing out his hair so he can have his mohawk, it definitely would be fun as well because he looks timid but obviously, he’s got genya’s temperament mixed with his own, which completely shifts his dynamics with malfoy (dw, harry still gets into a weird flying battle and on the quidditch team).

yes, like genya, his timidness is even WORSE around women. (he is a WRECK, poor guy.)

i wanted them both to have scars like in kny’s canon, i feel like as well it gives em’ some resemblance. with neville, maybe after algie drops him, he survives due to his magic awakening, however he’s left with the facial scar. with percy, i think him getting a facial scar fighting the troll would be hella cool. (which is where the marechi blood thing comes into play!)

nevertheless, i would think it takes not too long before sanemi and genya recognise eachother, and they reconcile with a lot of tears. neville has now gained his older brother back who is now much more protective than ever. they bicker so much its crazy whether in english or japanese. they agree not to tell anyone anything so everyone is clueless at this weird ahh development. it lowk confuses everyone but neville genuinely trusts percy with anything, thats his ‘nemi. and for percy, neville is his responsibility, his little brother that he won’t let die on him or fail again because he has so much to make up for. this wont stop him from calling neville ‘brat’ as a term of endearment or hitting his head and scolding him if he does stupid shit. (we know damn well the weasley siblings are gonna be jealous which is super fun).

it would be super fun having interactions seen from outsider povs

Snape: “Mr Longbottom, we are here to talk about your… grades. Mr Weasley, unless you are a statue, why are you still standing here?”

Neville: “You said I could have a family chaperone, Professor Snape.”

(percy glaring in the background like he’s just daring snape to say something)

Snape: “…Use your eyes to pay attention, not glare, Mr Weasley.”

snape is not messing with this weird shit, but he is judging it inside his head

like, the golden trio, with all the mischief they get into, are constantly centre of attention, theyre interesting to literally everyone with this almost magnetic pull that makes people want to get to know them, get close with them but harry and hermione just arent approachable to the average student

harry is the boy who lived, his title alone and what he’s gone through makes him intimidating, he’s also a public figure, which adds to the hesitance people may have to talk to him.

hermione is extremely smart, however she can come across as condescending, and that in itself is intimidating!

meanwhile, ron is accustomed to the wizarding world, he is more comfortable socialising, he doesnt have this same sort of elevation but he’s still someone you can respect— he’s well known, but he’s not intimidating, he acts like the rest of them and doesnt seem to be elevated to this same unreachable status. he’s down to earth, funny, and more than willing to be light hearted with anyone he meets (prejudice against slytherins aside, but i do think that over the years ron does mature, and then its just malfoy-phobia.)

point is, ron is APPROACHABLE. so he’s popular, he does most of the connecting and talking because people are curious and know their best chance is ron. he’s not a pushover, he won’t say everything, but he’s a hero thats actually reachable, attainable and even relatable. unlike with harry, he’s not the target of slander articles, nor this sort of center point of fame which makes people easily suspicious, he’s ron. he doesnt act superior, he’s level with people.

of course, ron is again oblivious and sees himself as simply a hangeron, a side kick, and people obviously dont like him that much (they do, and if people were to ask, they would say ron is the most approachable of the trio, they like him.)

yes ron can be stubborn, rude, and slightly annoying, but he’s endearing, loyal, steadfast and funny. he treats harry like a normal person, and he treats everyone else similarly.

like two perfectionists who are outcasted for their social difficulties and intelligence.. you cannot tell me percy would not get brotherly emotions because she reminds him of a younger version of him, and he doesn’t want her to struggle the same way he did
