once when i was in high school we went on this field trip--and here's the weird thing: this was our whole grade, and our whole grade never went on field trips because this was high school and that's not how high school works, so i don't know how or why this was arranged--but we went on this short notice unexplained field trip to see a stage production of the grapes of wrath at this local professional theater, which is either associated with one college or another but i can't remember which. anyway, the grapes of wrath was not assigned school reading for us, so none of us knew what happened in it, except for i started reading a PDF of this book on the bus on the way to the theater but got pretty motion sick so i only really read the opening scene, about that flipped-over turtle. anyway here's the thing about that theater: they kind of suck at theater. i've seen multiple of their productions over the years through school and every time i was like wow, this is sort of bad, which is weird, because these are professionals. anyway all 200 of us watch this play with quite bad actors and weirdly good sets which somehow make the acting seem even worse all the way through to the end, which is, as those of you who have read the grapes of wrath will know but we did not, an adult breastfeeding scene. and so we were all like Huh. and people in my english class and social circle which combined was a good number of people knew i had been reading the book on the way there and so everyone was like hey, we've just seen this lady's tit, what the fuck was up with that adult breastfeeding scene, and i had to say i don't know. i only knew about the flipped-over turtle, and that wasn't in the play. all this to say that i recently read an author’s fic that arrived in my inbox which ALSO featured breastfeeding--explicably, it was new parents fucking--and now i know that's a pattern, but also: every time lactation comes up i think about that field trip.
