Law was tapping his finger on his desk for who knows how long. He’s been glued to his study since dawn, figuring out how to apologize. He looked out the window and sighed, “No point in pondering…”

He stood up and walked to your quarters. Law raised his hand to knock before he froze, hearing the sounds of objects ruffling, backpack being zipped, and sniffles. It felt like his heart plummeted.

Law entered the room with urgency and was met with your tear-struck face and backpack nearly full.

“[name]...” he whispered. You looked at him, almost mortified. “Captain, it’s not…not what it looks like,” you stammered. Law sighed and quietly shut the door, taking one step towards you, internally cringing when you step back out of fear.

“Look [name], I just want to talk to you, but whatever you’re thinking, please stop” his voice was rough, almost pleading. You turned to face him properly, the first time you’ve seen him since your argument.

Law took a deep breath and sighed before speaking, “I know my words were harsh. I can’t say I didn’t mean it but my intention wasn’t to hurt you or make you feel inadequate.” You crossed your arms still feeling hurt, “Then why did you? I don’t understand how me trying to help and protect the crew means I’m useless.” Your voice cracked, and so did his heart hearing it.

He leaned against the wall, watching your figure shake as you tried to hold yourself together. “You have all the right to be upset with me but you are anything but useless. You’ve done so much for the crew and I’m a fool for making you think otherwise.” His voice was calm, comforting and your mouth twisted into a frown.

Law took a step forward and felt relief when you didn’t move back. He continued, “I’ve never told anyone this but I’ve lost people in the past…someone in particular who was kind and reckless like you. I projected that fear onto you. I’m…I’m sorry, [name]”.

Tears were now falling at his words. Your shoulders shook as you tried to speak but no words came out. His heart clenched and he muttered out a soft, “come here” before pulling you into his chest, holding you in a comforting embrace. You could hear his racing heart through your quiet sobs.

Law placed a hand securely behind your head and on the middle of your back, rubbing comforting circles. Shaky hands came up and gripped his shirt. He didn’t rush you, just held and comforted you, as if it was just the two of you in the world.

You pulled away, wiping your tears. Once he saw that you were okay, he spoke up, “If I ever say shitty things to you again, you have the right to hit me on the back of my head, alright?” You snickered and he smiled softly, relieved that you were smiling again.

“I’m sorry too, Law. I know how important sticking to the plan is and…” your voice trailed off and his eyes softened.

“No, you don’t have to apologize. You were just trying to help, and you did. You’re important to us…to me” He spoke uncharacteristically soft. You nodded at his words and he smiled at your acknowledgement.

Law pulled you into one last embrace, holding you for what felt like an eternity. He glanced at your bag and whispered, “And don’t you ever try to leave this crew. I’ll just drag your ass back here.”

You chuckled at his words, “Aye aye, captain”. The tension seemed to dissipate, a newfound sense of understanding and appreciation between you two.
