The humming of the Polar Tang was far too loud for Law's comfort. It felt like the tension from his last interaction with you settled over the sub and everyone felt it. No amount of paper work or medical books could drown out the overwhelming guilt that Law carried the past few days. Everyone was walking around eggshells whenever they passed by Law or you.
Bepo's ears flattened every time he saw your downturned expression when Law was in the room. No one knew what happened exactly, but they all know that their crewmate and captain are ticking time bombs of emotion. Law was well aware of everyone's curiosity and damn it, he felt like was responsible and it's his duty to mend things between you two.
Even Penguin and Shachi couldn't use humor to ease the tension or to comfort you. Every time Law walked into the same room as you, there was a subtle rise in your shoulders and you'd mutter some meek excuse to leave the room.
“Oi, captain, what happened between you and [name]? They’ve been down since the fight we had with those pirates a few days ago…” Penguin asked with trepidation, aware of Law’s attitude. The surgeon sighed and shook his head, “It’s nothing…” The lie felt like a burn; It was anything but nothing.
You're suffering from the unease that settled for days. The guilt of disappointing your captain felt like Sea Stone cuffs on your ankles that weighed you down with every step. You found yourself ruffling your hair in frustration, anger, and worst of all, sadness. “I wouldn’t have dragged you onto this” the words echoed in your mind, “weak” “clueless”. It felt like ghosts of the past were coming back to haunt you. You couldn’t help but question, “Do I really belong in this crew?”
You always carried this sense of doubt and even thought about leaving the Heart Pirates quietly so they don’t see your inadequacy. Tonight, that feeling was overwhelming and before you could stop yourself, you began packing lightly.
After all, the Heart Pirates don’t need a reckless burden, right? Tears stung your eyes at that thought. The thought of leaving hurt, but the memory of Law’s anger due to your negligence scared you even more.
Law was tapping his finger on his desk for who knows how long. He’s been glued to his study since dawn, figuring out how to apologize. He looked out the window and sighed, “No point in pondering…”
He stood up and walked to your quarters. Law raised his hand to knock before he froze, hearing the sounds of objects ruffling, backpack being zipped, and sniffles. It felt like his heart plummeted.
Law entered the room with urgency and was met with your tear-struck face and backpack nearly full.
“[name]...” he whispered. You looked at him, almost mortified. “Captain, it’s not…not what it looks like,” you stammered. Law sighed and quietly shut the door, taking one step towards you, internally cringing when you step back out of fear.
“Look [name], I just want to talk to you, but whatever you’re thinking, please stop” his voice was rough, almost pleading. You turned to face him properly, the first time you’ve seen him since your argument.
Law took a deep breath and sighed before speaking, “I know my words were harsh. I can’t say I didn’t mean it but my intention wasn’t to hurt you or make you feel inadequate.” You crossed your arms still feeling hurt, “Then why did you? I don’t understand how me trying to help and protect the crew means I’m useless.” Your voice cracked, and so did his heart hearing it.
He leaned against the wall, watching your figure shake as you tried to hold yourself together. “You have all the right to be upset with me but you are anything but useless. You’ve done so much for the crew and I’m a fool for making you think otherwise.” His voice was calm, comforting and your mouth twisted into a frown.
Law took a step forward and felt relief when you didn’t move back. He continued, “I’ve never told anyone this but I’ve lost people in the past…someone in particular who was kind and reckless like you. I projected that fear onto you. I’m…I’m sorry, [name]”.
Tears were now falling at his words. Your shoulders shook as you tried to speak but no words came out. His heart clenched and he muttered out a soft, “come here” before pulling you into his chest, holding you in a comforting embrace. You could hear his racing heart through your quiet sobs.
Law placed a hand securely behind your head and on the middle of your back, rubbing comforting circles. Shaky hands came up and gripped his shirt. He didn’t rush you, just held and comforted you, as if it was just the two of you in the world.
You pulled away, wiping your tears. Once he saw that you were okay, he spoke up, “If I ever say shitty things to you again, you have the right to hit me on the back of my head, alright?” You snickered and he smiled softly, relieved that you were smiling again.
“I’m sorry too, Law. I know how important sticking to the plan is and…” your voice trailed off and his eyes softened.
“No, you don’t have to apologize. You were just trying to help, and you did. You’re important to us…to me” He spoke uncharacteristically soft. You nodded at his words and he smiled at your acknowledgement.
Law pulled you into one last embrace, holding you for what felt like an eternity. He glanced at your bag and whispered, “And don’t you ever try to leave this crew. I’ll just drag your ass back here.”
You chuckled at his words, “Aye aye, captain”. The tension seemed to dissipate, a newfound sense of understanding and appreciation between you two.
