the poetry between us

He flipped the lights on, guiding her toward the kitchen with a hand against her lower back. He leaned against the countertop, watching her for a moment before breaking the silence. "Can I get you anything? The semla might take a bit, so if you're hungry or want a drink, honestly just raid the fridge.." Charlie paused, a gentle smile touching his lips as he rubbed at the back of his neck. "I know this isn't the exciting post-match party you probably envisioned." He looked up at her again, softer this time. "But I'm glad you're here. You make this feel… manageable. Like.. maybe I don't always have to figure it out alone."

Charlie   opened   the   door   for   her   and   she   stepped   out,   accepting   his   offered   hand   and   interlocking   their   fingers.   She   smiled   as   he   welcomed   her   into   his   home   and   she   took   in   the   space,   understanding   the   vulnerability   that   he   was   showcasing   to   her.   They   made   their   way   to   the   kitchen   and   Signe   stood   across   from   Charlie,   leaning   against   the   kitchen   island.   She   smiled   at   him   as   she   noticed   him   watching   her,   her   cheeks   flushing   ever   so   slightly   as   she   turned   her   gaze   away.   Signe's   eyes   scanned   the   room,   noting   the   baking   items   laying   about   like   they   never   quite   made   their   way   back   into   storage   when   he   broke   the   silence. "Just   a   glass   of   wine   is   fine,"   she   shrugged,   taking   a   half-step   towards   the   fridge,   knowing   she   had   permission   but   still   feeling   unsure.   She   noted   his   bashful   expression   and   her   heart   squeezed   with   affection   at   the   site.   Signe   stepped   closer   to   him,   lifting   a   hand   to   caress   his   cheek.   "All   I   wanted   after   the   match   was   to   spend   time   with   you,"   she   admitted,   softly.   "And   as   long   as   you're   willing,   I'd   love   to   figure   things   out   with   you."   She   cleared   her   throat   and   took   a   step   back,   a   little   embarrassed   at   being   so   honest   and   then   Signe   offered   Charlie   another   flirty   smile.   "So,   you   think   you   can   handle   making   semla   all   on   your   own?"

Signe   felt   her   cheeks   flush   at   Bex's   words   and   the   honesty   in   her   tone.   She   felt   like   she   had   been   a   bit   presumptuous   in   assuming   that   Bex   was   potentially   interested   in   her   like   that,   but   she'd   worried   about   upsetting   the   woman   if   she   hadn't   said   anything.   Thankfully,   the   other   had   taken   the   notice   in   stride,   and   confirmed   that   Signe   would   have   been   in   trouble   otherwise. The   curly   haired   woman   set   her   glass   down   on   the   bar   top   and   accepted   Bex's   hand.   "All   right,   let's   do   this   then,"   she   agreed,   her   voice   tinged   with   warmth   and   mischief.   She   was   thankful   that   Bex   seemed   to   still   be   willing   to   befriend   her   and   Signe   was   looking   forward   to   just   lose   herself   in   the   boldness   of   the   moment.   "After   you!"

Signe   smiled   as   she   clicked   through   several   pictures,   all   in   varying   angles   of   Leon.   After   the   last   click,   her   focus   shifted   back   to   Leon.   He'd   asked   how   it   looked   and   she   walked   closer   to   him   again,   opening   up   her   photos   application   and   swiping   through   the   images   she'd   just   taken   of   him.   "So   cool,   of   course,"   she   teased,   lifting   her   phone   slightly   higher   so   he   could   get   a   better   look.   A   small   smirk   snuck   onto   her   face   as   she   tilted   her   head   at   him   before   adding,   "Also,   you   have   the   kind   of   bone   structure   that   makes   my   job   ridiculously   easy.   So   thanks   for   that."   Signe   locked   her   phone   and   slipped   it   into   her   back   pocket.   She   hadn't   expected   how   well   she   got   along   with   him   while   working   on   this   project,   but   it   was   a   welcome   surprise.   "I   think   I've   got   what   I   need   for   now.   Any   complaints   or   feedback   on   how   the   jacket   is   fitting?"

Signe   laughed,   lifting   her   phone   before   lowering   it   again,   watching   the   Leon   shifted   as   if   preparing   for   a   performance.   She   stepped   toward   him   and   reached   up   to   adjust   the   collar   of   the   jacket   so   that   it   laid   just   so.   Her   fingers   smoothed   the   lapel   into   place,   her   touch   gentle   but   focused,   more   about   the   fabric   than   the   man   beneath   it.   "I   want   the   jacket   to   speak   for   itself.   It   has   enough   presence   of   its   own,"   she   said,   quietly.   "It   doesn't   need   a   persona   to   sell   it.   Just   needs   you   being   you."   She   looked   up   at   him,   eyes   meeting   his.   There   wasn't   a   flirtation   in   her   gaze,   but   there   was   a   warmth   there.   The   kind   offered   to   someone   you   want   to   understand   you,   not   impress   you. "I   don't   want   to   capture   a   performance   of   you,"   Signe   continued   to   explain.   "I   don't   want   the   guy   who   flirts   with   the   lens   or   smirks   for   the   crowd.   You   carry   yourself   with   a   kind   of   confidence   that   just   can't   be   taught.   The   jacket   is   about   highlighting   that.   Self-expression   and   self-confidence."   Her   hands   dropped   back   to   her   sides   and   she   took   a   step   back.   "I   know   you're   used   to   being   looked   at,   but   this   isn't   about   attention.   It's   about   presence.   The   jacket's   mine,   but   the   aura?   That   should   be   all   you.   Just   Leon."

But then, at the red light before his street, he glanced over. Signe was bathed in the light of the dashboard, the red glow of the stoplight, and the soft yellows of the streetlights. She was singing the words to the song with the tiniest movement of her mouth. Something about the way her fingers rested folded in her lap, the way her energy filled up the quiet without saying a word. It anchored him. Not fixed. Not distracted. Just there. Present. Without a word, Charlie reached over, brushing his fingers beneath her chin to tilt her face toward him. He leaned across the center console and kissed her slow and soft, just long enough for the light to shine green on her skin. He finally pulled back, the corners of his mouth curling into something crooked and fond as he turned his eyes back to the road. By the time they pulled into the driveway, he was humming along with her. He put the car in park, and looked over again. "Thank you... for bein' here tonight," he spoke low. "I haven't really spoken to you about my old man.. and it might take me some time to, so bare with me but.. Losin' a game is hard on me, and that's somethin' I need you to expect.. But, I wanted to say that I probably would've spiraled if you weren't here.. so.. Thanks." He let a moment pass before he softened the moment with a gentle smile. "And now you're stuck with me. And there are a lot of Swedish pastries in your very near future."

They   were   almost   to   Charlie's   house   at   a   stop   light   and   she   gazed   out   of   the   window,   singing   softly   beneath   her   breath   the   song   currently   playing.   Signe   felt   fingers   under   her   chin,   tilting   her   face   towards   him   and   felt   his   lips   pressing   against   hers   so   gently   in   took   her   breath   away.   The   kiss   felt   like   it   lasted   an   eternity,   but   what   was   probably   (   realistically   )   only   a   few   seconds   or   so   before   he   pulled   away   and   offered   her   a   crooked   smile.   Signe   stared   back   at   him,   a   little   breathless   and   a   lot   smitten,   watching   as   he   turned   his   attention   back   to   the   road   and   continued   driving.   She   didn't   dare   break   the   silence   and   took   the   time   between   there   and   Charlie's   driveway   to   calm   her   frantic   heart.   They   pulled   in   and   Charlie   turned   to   her   and   explained   as   best   he   could   about   what   was   swirling   in   his   mind.   Her   eyes   softened   at   his   vulnerability   and   she   reached   out,   her   thumb   brushing   lightly   along   the   back   of   his   hand.   "I   don't   need   you   to   tell   me   everything   tonight,   but   I   want   you   to   know   that   I   will   always   be   here   when   you're   ready   to.   However   long   that   takes,"   she   whispered,   lifting   his   hand   to   press   a   kiss   to   his   knuckles.   "And   if   after   a   shit   match,   you   need   someone   to   wear   your   name   in   glitter   and   kiss   it   better,   then   I'm   your   girl."

Charlie chewed on his bottom lip, spinning his keys on one finger as if to ground himself. "I used to think I had to come back from a bad match already fixed. Had to be strong. Focused. Quiet about it. Suck it up and be better, ya know? But then... you go and stand there lookin' like that.. wearin' my name, paint on your cheeks.. and suddenly I don't feel like I'm fallin' apart anymore. Just feel… good." His gaze lingered on her, equal parts affection and disbelief. "You're dangerous, Holström. Got me smilin' after a loss. That's unheard of." Then, like he needed to lighten the mood before it got too honest, he nodded toward the car. "C'mon then," he said with a grin, nudging her gently with his shoulder. "What do you say we go back to mine and make some semla? I could use somethin' sweet... And I’m not just talkin' about the dessert."

Signe   smiled,   her   fingers   stroking   at   the   hair   on   Charlie's   neck   as   he   held   her   tighter.   She   didn't   interrupt—just   let   him   talk   and   get   all   of   the   thoughts   she   was   sure   had   been   swirling   in   his   mind.   When   he   pressed   his   lips   against   her,   she   kissed   him   back   just   as   gently,   grounding   them   both   with   the   kind   of   patience   she   was   starting   to   understand   he   needed   on   nights   like   this. "Happy   to   help,"   she   murmured,   her   fingers   trailing   down   his   arm.   "The   ladies   were   really   sweet.   One   of   them   complimented   my   earrings   and   another   tried   to   get   me   to   commit   to   karaoke   next   week,"   Signe   offered   him   a   teasing   grin.   "They   were   definitely   being   both   nosy   and   protective.   But   in   a   good   way.   Like   big   sisters   trying   to   size   me   up   before   letting   me   sit   with   them." Charlie   admitted   she   was   the   first   girl   he'd   brought   into   the   WAG   box   and   Signe   felt   herself   straighten   in   surprise.   Her   expression   softened,   something   tender   sparking   in   her   chest.   "Really?"   she   asked,   her.   voice   quieter,   deeply   touched   by   the   confession.   She   watched   the   way   he   looked   away,   how   he   seemed   nervous   to   have   said   the   words   out   loud,   and   her   hand   reached   for   his   without   thinking.   Signe   laced   their   fingers   together   and   ducked   her   head   to   catch   his   eye.   "My   face   paint   must   be   working   its   magic   on   you.   Clearly   very   powerful   stuff." Signe   lifted   a   brow   as   Charlie   called   her   dangerous.   "Oh?"   she   asked,   a   slow   smile   tugging   at   her   lips.   She   tilted   her   head,   slightly   amused.   "You're   such   a   sweet   talker,   Charlie,"   she   murmured,   tapping   his   chest   with   a   finger.   At   the   mention   of   her   favorite   dessert,   Signe   perked   up.   "If   you're   going   to   be   making   semla,   I'll   need   to   supervise   from   the   counter.   Yes,   taste   testing   is   included."

Signe   let   out   an   amused   laugh   as   Leon   spoke.   she   caught   the   smirk,   and   the   way   he   shifted   his   weight.   It   was   all   the   very   deliberate   kind   of   postures   guys   got   when   they   were   trying   to   seem   effortless.   And   it   likely   worked   on   some   people.   It   might've   worked   on   her   at   one   time   in   her   life,   but   not   this   moment.   Not   when   her   heart   was   already   spoken   for.   Signe   tilted   her   head,   letting   the   pause   stretch   to   make   it   clear   that   she   caught   the   innuendo   and   that   she   wasn't   biting.   Her   smile   was   polite   but   knowing,   like   she   was   declining   an   offer   she   hadn't   been   offered   in   the   first   place. "How   about   you   stand   by   the   mural?"   she   said,   gesturing   to   a   nearby   wall   in   her   living   room   where   the   light   hit   just   right.   "You'll   get   better   contrast   that   way   and   I   can   get   the   shot   without   cropping   out   your   very   humble   ego."   The   tease   was   gentle,   friendly   yet   firm.   She   stepped   back   and   lifted   her   phone,   angling   it   to   frame   the   shot.   "C'mon,   rockstar.   Give   me   something   I   can   post   without   your   fans   thinking   you're   flirting   with   your   photographer."

"I   could   try   teaching   you,   but   full   disclosure,   sewing's   a   test   of   patience   on   even   the   best   day,"   she   laughed   softly,   the   sound   low   and   warm   as   she   lifted   her   glass   to   her   lips.   "You   have   to   really   want   it,   but   I'm   all   for   a   girls'   night   with   fabric   scraps   and   wine."   She   took   a   moment   to   consider   Phoebe's   questions,   a   small   smile   on   her   lips.   "Well,   I'm   not   a   big   shot   by   any   means,   but   I   do   have   a   fashion   insta   and   I'm   putting   together   my   first   actual   line.   I've   made   random   pieces   here   and   there,   but   never   a   full   cohesive   collection,"   she   explained,   swirling   the   liquid   in   her   glass.   "I   went   to   school   for   fashion   design   and   business,   so   the   long-term   plan   has   always   been   to   make   it   my   full-time   job.   Just   not   quite   there   yet."   Her   smile   softened   at   the   compliment,   her   gaze   flicking   down   at   the   outfit   she   hadn't   fully   let   herself   believe   was   a   hit   until   right   that   moment.   "Thank   you.   It   means   a   lot   coming   from   someone   who's   clearly   got   great   taste." As   their   glasses   clinked,   Signe   leaned   closer,   curiosity   lighting   up   her   features.   "Sketchy   dive   bars,   huh?"   she   repeated.   "I   can't   say   I've   explored   any   bar   scene   all   that   much,   but   I   like   to   think   I'm   pretty   open   minded."   She   shrugged   her   shoulders,   amused   and   entertained   by   the   discussion.   "I'll   admit   I'm   a   little   bit   spoiled   by   the   finer   things   in   life,   but   I'm   not   opposed   to   sticky   floors."

Signe   didn't   miss   the   grin   that   Leon   gave   her   —   easy,   charming   and   with   just   enough   heat   to   give   her   pause.   She's   still   trying   to   figure   him   out.   She   couldn't   deny   that   his   flattery   hit   its   mark   at   times,   but   there   was   a   line   she   was   not   about   to   cross,   and   she   just   wasn't   sure   if   he   saw   it   or   if   he   was   deliberately   toeing   it.   Still,   she   smiled   —   she   thinks   she   can   see   the   game   he's   playing,   but   she's   not   sure   if   he   can   see   that   she's   not   playing   it.   "Well,   I   don't   have   anything   too   fancy,   but   I   do   have   my   handy   ol'   phone,"   she   said,   reaching   into   her   back   pocket   to   wave   it   in   the   air.   Her   eyes   narrowed   in   mock   consideration,   and   crossing   her   arms   over   her   chest.   "You'll   have   to   sign   a   release   form,   of   course...   and   swear   to   keep   your   ego   in   check."

He didn't say anything right away. Just dropped his bag and walked straight into her arms, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his head in the curve of her neck like it was the only place in the world he belonged. And maybe that was what undid him most. When he finally leaned back, he pressed his forehead gently to hers, and his voice was quieter than usual. "I'm glad you came tonight. I'm sorry the match was shit, but.." He paused, searching her face, then let out a low chuckle as his hand came up to brush her cheek. "You've got face paint on.. That for me?" He stepped back and took her hand, spinning her in place until he could see his name stretched across her back. A real grin pulled at his lips, wider this time. "Oi, look at you, love. I might need to keep you around for every loss. This is starting to feel like a win." Charlie hummed, pressing a slow kiss to her lips, "Tell me you at least had a good time tonight, yeah?"

Signe's   arms   came   around   him   instantly,   grounding   and   sure.   One   hand   smoothed   along   the   back   of   his   neck   and   he   buried   his   face   in   the   crook   of   her   neck.   She   allowed   them   to   stand   there   in   silence   for   a   moment,   her   arms   offering   all   the   warmth   and   safety   he   would   never   have   to   ask   her   for.   When   he   pulled   back   and   pressed   their   foreheads   together,   she   smiled   gently.   "I   came   to   support   you—Wins   aren't   required,"   she   said   softly,   her   thumb   brushing   along   his   cheek.   She   looked   at   him,   her   heart   swelling   with   the   desire   to   protect   and   comfort   him.   Emotions   that   were   building   too   big,   too   soon   bubbled   just   beneath   the   surface. Thankfully,   Charlie   pointed   out   her   face   paint,   breaking   some   of   the   tension   in   the   air.   Signe   giggled   softly,   stepping   back   just   far   enough   to   strike   a   dramatic   pose.   "It   was   Elise's   idea,   actually.   She   said   I   needed   to   show   proper   team   spirit   if   I   was   going   to   sit   with   the   WAGs."   When   he   kissed   her,   Signe   closed   her   eyes,   enjoying   the   warmth   of   his   lips.   "I   had   fun.   The   other   ladies   were   all   really   sweet." Her   eyes   sparkled   with   something   mischievous.   "You   know,   with   all   the   looks   I   was   receiving,   I'm   getting   the   impression   you   don't   invite   girls   into   the   WAGs   box   very   often?"

Signe   took   a   step   back,   tilting   her   head   to   the   side   as   she   studied   the   last   adjustment   to   the   fabric   on   Leon's   shoulder.   The   fabric   lay   in   a   way   that   was   just   right;   her   vision   coming   together   just   as   she'd   imagined   when   she'd   begun   sketching   it.   Her   lips   stretched   into   a   smile,   warm   and   fond   at   Leon's   question.   "Obviously,   you   look   incredible,"   she   said,   honestly.   "I   kind   of   both   love   and   hate   how   well   you   pull   this   off,"   she   teased.   Leon   stepped   closer,   and   Signe   blinked,   the   air   between   them   shifting   ever   so   slightly.   She   didn't   move   back   nor   did   she   step   closer,   her   gaze   held   his   steady   for   a   moment,   assessing   him.   She   wasn't   sure   what   she   was   reading   behind   his   eyes,   so   instead   she   reached   out   and   adjusted   the   lapel   of   the   jacket   with   a   light   touch.   "I   should   take   a   picture   of   the   process   before   you   give   it   back,"   she   said,   her   tone   light   and   teasing,   a   buffer   against   the   tension   building   between   them.

Signe   felt   her   cheeks   burn   at   Bex's   compliments.   She   was   used   to   the   surface-level   kind   to   a   certain   extent,   but   Bex's   words   felt   more   pointed   than   they   should   have   for   someone   she'd   just   met.   She   laughed,   the   sound   soft   and   a   little   startled,   her   eyes   darting   briefly   to   her   drink   before   looking   back   up.   "That...might   be   one   of   the   best   yet   most   intimidating   compliments   I've   ever   received."   She   lifted   her   glass   to   her   lips   and   took   another   sip   as   a   way   to   fill   the   silence   between   them. It   wasn't   that   she   wasn't   flattered   —   she   was.   If   Bex   was   expressing   any   sort   of   interest,   she   was   very   beautiful   and   spoke   in   a   way   that   made   everything   feel   a   little   more   cinematic.   But   it   also   made   Signe   suddenly   aware   of   how   vividly   she   could   hear   Charlie's   voice   in   her   mind   —   teasing,   and   soft,   and   true.   They   weren't   official   —   not   yet   —   but   something   about   being   on   the   receiving   end   of   Bex's   attention   made   her   stomach   twist   with   guilt. "On   the   topic   of   breaking   hearts...I   should,   uh,   probably   warn   you,"   she   started,   forcing   a   crooked   smile.   "I'm   kind   of..."   she   trailed   off,   searching   for   the   right   words,   "figuring   some   stuff   out.   With   someone.   Seeing   someone."   Signe   gnawed   on   her   bottom   lip,   slightly   anxious   about   how   Bex   would   react   and   curious   to   see   if   a   true   friendship   could   blossom   between   them.   "But   thank   you.   I've   never   thought   of   myself   as   particularly   bold,"   she   murmured.   There   was   a   lightness   in   her   tone   and   a   gentle   kind   of   honesty   that   peeked   through.   As   Bex   reached   for   her   glass,   Signe   mirrored   the   motion.   She   lifted   her   glass   in   a   quiet   cheers.   "To   boldness,"   she   said,   a   bashful   smile   gracing   her   features.   "And   maybe   a   dance   or   two."

Signe   let   out   a   pleased   laugh   at   the   excitement   that   lit   up   the   other   woman's   face.   Her   cheeks   flushed   as   she   pushed   her   hair   behind   her   ears   and   struck   a   pose,   allowing   the   other   to   fully   take   in   the   dress.   No   matter   how   many   times   she   was   complimented   on   her   designs,   it   never   failed   to   warm   her   heart.   "I   did,"   she   nodded,   almost   shyly.   "It   turned   out   better   than   I   thought   it   would,   honestly." She   nodded,   shifting   her   weight   from   one   foot   to   another.   "I've   been   designing   for   years.   I   started   in   high   school,"   she   began.   "Then   I   went   to   uni   for   fashion   design.   This   is   one   of   the   first   ones   that   I've   made   for,   like,   a   club   or   party   environment."   Signe   glanced   down   at   the   dress,   smoothing   her   hands   over   the   fabric   with   a   small   smile.   "Felt   like   a   good   a   night   as   any   to   give   it   a   debut." The   offer   to   fight   on   her   behalf   made   her   laugh   again,   the   sound   a   little   brighter   this   time.   "Deal.   I'll   let   you   know   if   anyone   gives   me   a   hard   time."   Signe   lifted   her   drink   in   a   lighthearted   toast   before   taking   a   sip.   "Not   exactly   new   to   Windsor   Bay   --   Just   newer   to   the   party   scene."   Her   smile   grew   when   Phoebe   introduced   herself,   warm   and   open.   "I'm   Signe.   Sing-neh.   It's   nice   to   meet   you,   Phoebe.   Are   you   a   regular?"
