Something I hadn't grappled much with before, but now am thinking about in my second Shadows watch, is how important Vicki's attachment to and relationship with Josette's ghost is to both her character, and her narrative weight on the show - and how those things are a casualty of Barnabas emerging from the family crypt. By moving into the Old House, Barnabas literally replaces Josette as the spirit of that House and the most important supernatural power there! It was Josette who appeared to Vicki before her anticipated death, telling her "Don't be afraid,", it was Josette's voice repeating Bill's posthumous charge against Matthew (a life for a life), and it is Josette who will be David and Vicki's greatest champion against Laura in the Phoenix arc. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I'm appending it to my usual list of "ways Barnabas's arrival did Vicki's character dirty": making Vicki's connection to the Collins's ancestral past irrelevant.

Definitely the reason why this Leviathan AU fanfic went off with a bang. Julia Hoffman is a fugitive from the Leviathan government, and Barnabas is not only one of the entities looking for her, but he's also trying to protect Josette, whom he still believes is Their hostage to his good behavior. Showing the little ways he could rebel and stand up for himself and his values was as much fun as showing how damn clever Julia could be, especially when backed into a corner. I really liked the juxtaposition of two opponents who really understood each other, and Julia's physical incapacity making her inferior on that level, so she had to amp up her already terrifying intellect and understanding of psychology.

I've been using this tool called tumblr-utils to back up my tumblr blogs. it creates a locally navigatable archive of a given tumblr url's posts, which is more convenient than the post soup you get from tumblr's native blog export feature.
what that means is that I have a folder on my computer with the name of my url with an index.html file in it, and when i click on that file to open it in a browser I get a simple page with a list of years and months. selecting a specific month will send me to a list of the posts i made or reblogged in that month, similar to tumblr's own archive page. the contents of the post including images are stored locally on your machine.
It can also make a separate index file that organises posts by tag, which is great if you're a consistent tagger, but it will list every single tag you've ever used so it can take a while to find the tag you're looking for in the list if you're a habitual tag commentator. generating the tag archive also takes a while depending on how many posts have to be processed.
you can make it back up any blog as long as it's not set to private. I have backups of both my main and sideblogs and it keeps them in separate folders.
it's had some trouble going all the way back to the start of my main blog in 2012 just by sheer volume of posts, but by making it fetch posts from one month at a time I've been able to go back to 2015 (that's tens of thousands of posts), which was good enough for my purposes.
it might be a little scary to use if you've never touched the command line before, but there's both text and video instructions to set it up and using it is just a matter of typing the command and letting it do its thing in the background.
This document has a really good guide for setting it up, along with some other options for backup. I've been using tumblr utils for a while myself, and I run an incremental backup once a week.
Doomed siblings have me on a chokehold in a way no trope can ever achieve. Something so gut wrenchingly beautiful about two kids going through unimaginable trauma and coming out damaged forever. I always eat it up. Maybe they stay together and find solace only in each other, used and kicked out by society! Maybe they end up on opposite sides of the war! Maybe they end up betraying one another! Maybe one of them dies haunting the narrative forever! Maybe one of them destroys the world for the other! So many endless tragic possibilities!

Not quite classic lit and I have NO idea how it would work but SELKIES, they'd fit Collinsport's setting and you can never have too many magical women in DS (they're my fave mythical creature next to werewolves)
18. If you could recast any character as a different actor, which would it be?
I think I discussed with someone at one point I'd like to see Joel Crothers as a significantly less handsy/creepy Ned. They could totally ignore his resemblance to Joe but Crothers plays a good villain and I feel like Ned would actually be fun to watch (instead of mr grabbyhands)
