i just noticed that the "classique" s&f series is just titled "the adventures of spirou & fantasio" in Finland, like without specifying it's like a whole different series of its own, while the "main" "canon" series is referred to as "new adventures". i think they started doing new adventures after album 50 so... idk shit's fucking stupid

on a reread i guess i can understand why Le Baie des Cochons didn't get the best reception because as a pure adventure it is just kinda alright, not to mention this team's Secco is genuinely really weak despite being such a central character. i dunno if it's just the stiffness of Elric's artwork but she's lacking her usual energy, it makes me think back to Fournier's dislike of her for being "annoying" because that is genuinely kinda what's missing. Secco is entertainingly annoying because she's not only whip-smart but also completely relentless, but in this album it feels like she's kinda phoning it in like her only purpose is just to check some boxes to serve the plot. also at least in the finnish translation some of the finglish (franglais?) Fantasio uses goes a bit overboard in how crass it is, dated draconian moral codes or not it just doesn't fit the era this album is supposed to emulate

why did they add those slutty little tanlines on Fantasio in La Baie des Cochons

genuinely think that more "modern" s&f teams have been missing that Franquin era sincerity and tenderness to their stories just because they're afraid it'd make the characters come across as gay. to be fair La Baie des Cochons also makes a little joke about it, but Lemoine & Baril still clearly don't shy away from portraying it in earnest too. like they actually get it, they understand why these characters were so damn endearing back in Franquin's era and judging from that short story they're willing to explore and maybe even evolve it further too if you just let them

that little comic's everything i've been missing from this series since i was like a teenager or something. people didn't like La Baie des Cochons but you'd have to be a complete moron to say Baril, Lemoine & Elric don't have immense potential as a Spirou team
