Food Conscious.

In regards to the essentials program, I found to be the most challenging of all subjects due to wrapping my head around business again. I feel as though it is the most important element in any industry, understanding how to approach a client through written content can sometimes get you the job over design at times. I felt as though all teachers were approachable and efficient with the certain skill sets. I am looking forward to delving more into this side of design in the future. 

It’s here. Our experimental film we shot a few weeks ago. So pleased with the outcome. We all did so well with the effort on the day of filming, it’s nice when you are with a bunch of people who are on the same wave length as each other ~ it makes everything a lot more easier. I couldn’t be more happier with this. 

Our last studio class was an opportunity to photograph our work, using hands in the shot with the touch and feel book gave it a nice element. Bede was able to produce the final outcome for the FOOD, OBJECT, HUMAN book and I couldn’t be more stoked. We went for a stripped back basic look using ink lettering for the typeface and we used superglue to stick the food onto the cardboard. Finalising the film and putting this all together to present to our peers has been a long time coming, and we are super stoked to share.

Today in our studio 1 class we had to present our current work progress. I am quite fond on my outcome, the images to the text are looking exactly how I envisoned which is really nice, coming to the end of the semester. I am finding though the print process to be the most difficult, wrapping my head around the little things on how to print properly has taken some time. Overall I’ve been really pleased with this assessment, it has challenged me from the brief, to working with film and being in a group.

The title of our short film. Today we plan to work on the film and start mocking up the publication that will compliment. Using materials from the film we will decide what will be the best route to go for stitching the fruit skin to the source of stock paper. Intrigued to see the process only because I know we all have our own vision on how this will turn out and seeing the end product regardless will be satisfying. 

Typeface chocolate. I got so hungry after our lecture today I never do this but I got a Crunch from the vending machine in building 80. This was one of my long time favourite chocolate bars, purely for the cruncccccch. Opening the bar, I totally forgot about the typeface imprinted on the chocolate. This all ties in with the semester topic of Food and design. 

Potential cover**** Using items from our bags, we ended up using a phone cord and a band aid. 

At the end of last weeks lecture Andy gave the cohort a chance to create the cover of the 100 Questions book. We were unsure of the direction we wanted to go for, when Andy mentioned an exercise we could do in the lecture, giving the whole cohort a chance to cooperate. These images from one of the last samples we tried. Someone was having fruit and decided to make the question mark out of it. I really enjoyed this concept and the look of the seeds bunched together.

Today Hana, Jheri, Lachlan, Bede and I shot our short film on food and gender. From using corn as teeth, Goji berries as taste buds, herbs as hair to kiwi fruit as underarm textures. It was an experimental film that allowed us as designers to delve into the link between food and gender, and how we wanted to portray a gender-less conversation that we regardless of gender, sexuality and race are all the same. From the look of our teeth the textures of our skin, to the taste buds on our tongue. Looking forward to editing this bad boy.

I found this image in last month’s work shop, I was drawn to it through the colours and the composition of objects. I decided to make a poster out of it for my Studio 1 class. Calling it Sex Food ~ Sex in the Kitchen. The theme revolves around the gender of sex in the kitchen, to diversity and culture. I was also stoked to know that Georgia was the teacher of this studio as I felt like she would whole heartedly would represent it respectfully and openly in the sense of tackling issue of the non-binary, androgynous elements that come into play with this them. Our group has decided to approach it in a ‘genderless’ manner, avoiding the notion of male and female as singular sex but as a whole, a human.

Play doh ~ takes me back to pre-school. What a time to be alive. In today’s workshop Georgia asked us to sculpt cultural masks we researched. I decided to go for the Kifwebe Mask from the Luba culture from the Republic of Congo. Using the colours of the play doh transformed the energy of the mask into something that to me looked like Nacho Libre. I enjoy the fact that the colour of the play doh allowed us to interpret the masks as a genderless as this is a huge part of the assessment we want to convey.
