LT kind of has a chip on his shoulder about always being overlooked, which of course endears him to me bc i looooove a spiteful bitch. which he definitely is. he's just also incredibly sweet and gentle and soft-spoken so people think he's not? but he is!! my wife is a bitch and i love her!!!!!!
the kelly mccrimmon thing has been blown slightly out of proportion (it sounds like it was more of a "listen, i don't know if you can pull it off, but if you do, i'll be really impressed" as opposed to a "you suck, give up") and LT isn't all that pissed about it now. but also mccrimmon still owes him the case of beer, so. pay up buddy!!

so anyway
he finally gets a contract with an echl team, then gets signed (by kelly mccrimmon!) in vegas where he does some presumably horrible things to your barracuda, and eventually gets called up to the NHL. but it sounds like things were always kind of weird in vegas for LT? between known goalie hater pete deboer and weirdo kelly mccrimmon, it's made clear that LT is never going to be the starter, even though he performed better in the '22 playoffs for vegas than hill did, and felt like he should have earned a chance to be the starter.
so he gets traded to the caps, and he fucking BLOSSOMS. career highs, caps mvp, league-leading numbers, there's vezina talk in both his seasons so far, and most importantly he seems really happy!
he has a lot (LIKE REALLY A LOT) (i could have put like 6 more) of quotes about how much it means to him that dc chose him and wants him.
ACTUAL GOALIE STUFF
i think part of the reason why LT was overlooked for so long is that he plays a different style than a lot of goalies, and it's kind of scary for coaches and gms. it's a "throwback, reactionary" goalie style. he relies on reflex time, athletic ability, and instinct (reading the play and the skaters).
(this article is from mid-season; LT was top in the nhl for goals saved above expected by the end of the season)
a lot goalie training nowadays is about having good technique and fundamentals so that you don't have to rely entirely on pure physicality or speed. and logan thompson playing old-style STRESSES PEOPLE THE FUCK OUT.

THE PARASOCIAL STUFF
LISTEN I JUST THINK HE'S NEAT OK. he speaks sort of softly and makes himself very small and hates being perceived and doesn't make eye contact a lot but he is also so so funny and self-deprecating and very beloved in the room.
he's learning russian so he can talk with the russians/belarusians. they keep taking him to sushi (which he doesn't eat) to get him to try it
he's quiet and soft-spoken but DO NOT BE DECEIVED he is a prankster
this season he put his defensemen's numbers on the back of his helmet which did make me cry and write this barely coherent stream of emotions LIKE HE JUST LOVES HIS GUYS SO MUCH OUAHGHHHHHHGHGHGHHH
he also put tom wilson's broken jaw on the back of his other helmet bc he was born to irritate tom
and then made this bashful little face when he was asked if he'd be keeping it for a while
he LOVES to tuck his face into the bosom of a larger man. LT is 6'4 you say? there are not that many people taller than him? nooooo prablem boss
he will simply make himself teeny tiny and get right in there
he follows in the footsteps of his spiritual ancestor braden holtby, and is constantly bathing himself sensually (capsmin loves us and puts up lots of slo-mo videos of it)

he loves dogs and does a lot of volunteering and promo for rescues and (of course) for the stanley pup playoffs
and honestly he just seems like a squishy person (physically and emotionally?) who would give a great hug and smell good

Official orange boy vet checkup: well he has a little plaque on his teeth but he is perfect otherwise. And he is so well behaved. And beautiful.
Tabby tuxedo girl vet checkup: her severe food sensitivities and heart disease are well controlled but she has a new mass in her abdomen. Pls come back in a few days to see if it’s cancer or just a weird poop! (The vet didn’t say bc we were both stressed but she was also well behaved and beautiful)
When John Tortorella invariably fucks up again and needs his image rehabilitated, I am going to pitch him my new feature film, Horse Hockey, a heartwarming coming of age story about Torts rescuing an an orphaned foal and teaching it to play hockey, Air Bud style.
And obviously the horse is a beast on the ice, even more so under Tortorella’s rigorous coaching. I mean, can you imagine this thing on a breakaway?? Except he’s not the hard-hitting, physical brute that everyone in the league assumes he is. He’s sensitive. He’s patient. He’s got high hockey IQ and beautiful edge work. But the refs only see his size and his (ahem) pedigree, and the horse just keeps racking up the penalty minutes. Teams are starting to get worried he’s a liability, and Tortorella’s ever growing presence as the horse’s coach/agent/father is NOT helping.
In a pivotal game against their divisional rival, the horse gets a five minute major for boarding, and Torts is on the ice before he even registers his body moving, screaming at the refs that “it was clean hit! It’s not his fault he’s 17 hands high!!” But then he feels something on his waist. A hoof, somehow fitted with a hockey skate blade, pulls him back into the penalty box, and the horse whinnies softly until Torts stops his tirade and sits down, pacified. The entire arena looks on, dead silent, as Torts starts reflexively smoothing his fingers through the horse’s beautiful mane, the way he used to every night when the horse was still too young and afraid to leave his side.
And as his horse son looks at him with his big, wet horse eyes and places his big, warm horse head onto his shoulder, John has a realization. He may have taught the horse about stick handling and face offs, but the horse taught him something even more important. The horse taught John Tortorella how to be a little bit more human.
A rookie debut requires one (1) Intense Stats Uncle telling you the guy you're facing off with is the second best faceoff guy in the league, and one (1) Amused Wolf Mother Who Is Also One Of The Greatest Russian Players Of All Time watching you bungle the faceoff and then gently asking if you were nervous.

Oooh I love dialogue so this is a great one! Honestly, a lot of the time I will start by writing the dialogue for a scene I am excited about and then circle back to add the context lmao.
Captain material (Brad Marchand/Patrice Bergeron) by @ultravioletlightwaves is my top pick. It stands out as having some of my favorite really well done realistic-feeling dialogue, especially the way these guys talk avoidantly around heavy topics. If you count group chat transcripts as dialogue, this has some of those that I really like as well!
Jerk (Connor Dewar/Brandon Duhaime) by armyofbees is one of my all around favorites, and I enjoy the dialogue in particular. It’s so funny. I also think it’s actually such a challenge to write a character like Dewey who has a really strong personality and have it ring true, like you have to think about how he’s always doing a bit and how that shows up in different contexts, and this one is just so good.
To baldly go where many men have gone before (Joel Farabee/Erik Johnson) by polyabathtub. Really, anything by polyabathtub, especially with Joel as a character, is super fun for dialogue, so consider this a representative!
