unpopular opinion: no one gives a fuck about abused children
this is something that's been bothering me for a while now.
people generally agree that child abuse/neglect is a bad thing. rarely, however, do they ever actually do anything about it.
i'n not talking about activism, by the way. i'm talking about the barest fucking minimum of care from society.
a disclaimer: i'm NOT trying to disparage any of the following groups or claim that what they went through wasn't as bad as child abuse or say that any of the tools used to help them are bad.
domestic abuse victims? shelters, support groups, everyone knows that abusing your partner is fucking horrible. if you knew someone close to you was being domestically abused, you'd do everything in your power to put a stop to it.
missing children? obviously a nightmare come to life for any parent, or even the entire community. missing posters, amber alerts, NCMEC, people understand the horrific gravity of these situations.
well, if the abuse was sexual, there's a slightly better chance of it being reported, and society at large treats pedos as scum of the earth (and rightfully so).
child neglect is treated more as a mark of bad character for the parent rather than a real, actual form of abuse. if you neglect your children really badly, cps might get involved. if the neglect isn't bad enough (i.e. immediately life threatening), you're SOL. most charities won't give food/water/other needed items to some random kid without the parent present, and good luck trying to convince someone to let you take a shower in their house. if the neglect is emotional, you're double SOL. many don't even consider emotional neglect a real form of neglect.
finally, child abuse. no one fucking cares about an abused child. if your parents beat the shit out of you/almost kill you, you might be "abused enough" to trigger cps to get off of their asses and do their jobs, and then you'll be put in into a horrible, frequently even MORE abusive foster care system. give up hope of being adopted if you aren't an infant, because the vast majority of people would rather spend tens of thousands of dollars on IVF than even consider you. you're damaged goods.
if you aren't considered abused enough, or if no one reports the abuse, or if cps don't come through, what do you get?
you get NOTHING. ZILCH. NOBODY GIVES A FUCK. there's nowhere to go for an abused child. no support networks or flagging systems. no charities or shelters. you can go through HELL every day of your life, you can SCREAM for help as loud as you want, and NO ONE WILL BAT A FUCKING EYE. you can want to kill yourself before you're in middle school. you can look your parents in the eyes and know that they hate you with all their souls before you're old enough to ride a bike. you can go to primary school with the knowledge that not a single person loves you. you can be broken over, and over, and over and over and over and over again until you can't possibly be broken anymore without something changing. and then you do. you think that something has to give eventually, and you're right. you do. you're what gives. no one finds you hiding under your bed. no one finds you trembling with dread at 2:55PM. you can experience the worst pain of your life, you can scream until your voice goes away, you can cry until your tear ducts go dry, and you can decide you're not gonna take it anymore. you can run out of the house and ask for help, and you know what's gonna happen? you're gonna get taken back to your abusers by the police. you can tell your teachers at school, and the most they can do is give you a hug with a pained expression on their faces, and then they have to send you home.
and then, after you finally get out? after you're freed not by any justice or sympathy, but by the fact that you turned 18? this will impact the rest of your life. this fundamentally changes who you are, right down to the chemical balances in your brain. you will never know what could have been, and there is no help for you. there are no scholarships or support groups for abused children. there are no seminars on how to deal with the epidemic of child abuse throughout our country, just a cold tally of its effects.
