SickJuju Illustration

One thing I've noticed about committing to draw so many prices to one project is you end up making pieces you didn't expect to make.

So many of the designs for this project have been focused on looking at lots of smaller things. This is the first one where I zoomed in a little and made the subject really big.

Shape, form, texture. All are possible beyond this dimension 😲

In my subjective opinion, you aren’t an artist if you think about art. Your an artist if you practice it. I feel through action it’s out we engage our brain chemistry and ultimately discover who we emerge as on the other side.

You ever used the drawing guide feature inside of procreate? There's so many fun ways to quickly create a duel, tri, or spiral pattern that is quick and fun to play with!

I had so much fun with SickJuju 013, the flash sheet style artwork, that I wanted to play with that approach using drawing guides to enjoy some repetition 😁🤘

I had SO MUCH FUN, drawing this one!!

Part of my inspiration for doing the SickJuju series is to recapture the joy I felt as a illustration student before "adult" life got in the way.

Well I always loved flash sheets, I had and bought so many fromy favourite artists, and it dawned on me. I've never made one??

Well here is my first flash sheet!! Farts & Fun 🤣🙏😹

I started this drawing in March, picked it up and put it down for several months, and today in August I finally got to a point where I was content it was done.

Some peices are so fun, and others are hard work 😂 but I really explored some other imagery that was different from the other pieces in the SickJuju series.

I was thinking the bobby shapes were pollen when I first started, but my wife kept calling them popcorn haha, so that's when I shifted to a carnival theme 🍿

This piece was actually a difficult one for me. I really tried to dig deep and explore some darker parts of me. But it felt very forced, I think it was unnatural to go looking for these parts of me. I have mixed feelings about the resulting outcome.

I started this price in February 2025, and finished it in July. A huge gap of drawing. Things got busy, but I felt a calling, with fresh eyes I love the outcome!

This one started with the passion create a 3d space, I got the idea from the drawing guides in procreate. I started with symmetry and then added differences and little details to the repeat patterns to make every part unique.

This piece is another departure, as this is the first one where I used a difference shade of blue to do background detailing.

I had the idea of the little frog spawn like shapes for awhile but I didn't know what to do with the piece. I dwelled, messed on with, clarted for lack of a better word and this is the result.

A sticky messy, visual brain vomit that sums up one thing. We all start in the mud, and grow from there, angry, hungry, and wanting more!

This one made me think of all the fun and quirky motion design projects I wanted to make when I worked at an agency. This is tribute to all the dreams I had for the cool things I wanted to make but sadly we're stolen due to sucky client briefs that sucked my soul.

This piece is the fractured soul I had a result of all of that, this piece is my rebellion, retaliation, it's my upstart, fight back, recharge for the passion I had, that's dormant, an informant of who I still can be 🤯🗡️🔮

This one was a depart from what I've been doing, alot more illustrative than doodle. But that's what I'm going for, the kind of low brow automatic drawing that is off the cuff and lacks serious focus.

What I'm chasing with these artworks is the freedom of the process, it's the love of the craft not the end result. I'm running away from chasing algorithms, and I'm trying my best to meditate on the craft.

The process of this price was my zen, my fortune 🔮🗡️😎

This one went way bigger, messier, and mightier than I could have imagined!!

I'm cooking on gas now, what started with constraints has now bounced back as a completely free flowing witchcraft summoned totom pole of wonder mixing brushes l, impulses and mark making which has resulted in this album cover style poster.

This is my just enjoyed piece to make I've done so far,

Now that I had defined a style and approach, and began to ponder on how I could apply constraints to create interesting effects?

The first constraint that came to mind was to put everything in a grid. These little containers formed the perfect catalyst for this imagery which I believe appeared like ancient runes reminiscent of ancient scripture or magical symbols from fantasy.

This one has me so excited, I feel like I took what I loved from the previous three and pushed it further than I could before. Building on the shapes and forms to really exaggerate the energy and flow!

This one I also explored the drippy effect of the pink, I like how it has such a supporting effect for the overall colour vibe and impression

This one was an interesting one for me as it appears to me like merging of energies in a wild life setting. Little gestures and impulses seemingly reveal rocky terrain, animals hiding, and faces all around.

The mixture of vaguer gestures allow for different markings to combine visually to give the impression for greater parts.

002 of my 100 doodles I've been doing, this one I did as a one long continuous line drawing which was fun.

You'll notice I try and get a little grumpy face into all of my illustrations, this will be my calling card, my signature if you will

100 days ago I drew this, but with the sole goal of not making art. Let me go back to the start, art has become a sore subject with me, as a former freelancer everything felt like it was for someone else.

I realised I was making out of fear.. "oh no what will they think?" "What will the client like?" "Will this get likes in IG?" It was suffering, it was sad, it was fear.

I would always second guess myself, call myself a perfectionist, really it was insecurity. I wanted to be liked, I wanted approval. But then someone slapped me in the heart 👀

"You should create out of curiosity, not fear. Just seen what happens, do it to find out, not for others"

That was electric to my ears, I was instantly moved to drawm recapturing the joy of finding out instead of performing for approval. I felt like a kid, I connected with my passion again and just found out what I could do!! This is the result

Hi guys, I made this as a student blog bag in 2018-2019 whilst I studied at university. I moved away from this space after I graduated but recently have fell out of love with Instagram due to the heavy focus on video.

I just want a space to share my art and so I've chosen to return here and share my little musings

Curiosity not fear 🗡️

This past year I discovered David Chou, artist and youtuber who explored creating art from a place of curiosity not fear. He expressed interest his wacky way that so many people create for the algorithm, for the feedback, for others. And it seems he champions making for yourself, hoarding your drawings away like little goblin trinkets and so I've decided to do that too!

Soon I will share my new project: "Sickjuju"

Based on the tag I used at university, it translates to "sick" = cool or rather liking it for the sake of it. "JuJu" = karma, energy, the intention and resulting consiquence.

Sickjuju is the act of making because I like it for the sake of exploring the result. It is my self muse, my journey, my expression. My identity.
