Lottie Porterfield, the sweet and kind heart and soul of the Hall gang with a right hook that could knock out a bear. She never knew her parents other than the fact the her mother had her very young and her father was no where to be found. She was only a few weeks old when she was left on door step of an orphanage. She spent most of her childhood being moved around and ignored until she ran away 15 after realizing she didn't have much time left before she was going to be on her own for good. By the time she was 17, Lottie had resorted to prostitution in a small cattle town to survive. Those couple of years was when she learned in order survive a world built to keep those like her down, she needed to be strong, both physically and mentally. Whether defending herself against a john who got a little too rough, or dealing with knowing she was seen as less than other, she became someone who wouldn't be knocked down easily, accepting the fact that she might never make it out of that life. Until she met Nick. She offered him her services, and when he rejected her, he noted just how young she was and offered her a way out. She was hesitant at first but ultimately decided anything was better than the life she was living. Nick and Donovan taught her to ride a horse, how to shoot a gun, and that she had more than just her body and skills to offer the world. They taught her that her kindness despite it all was something very few had to give, and to never let go of it. Some mistook her kindness and sweet personality as naivety, but she was anything but. Lottie was incredibly intelligent, and often saw things other couldn't, she knew how the world worked, lived through things worst than most, and still managed to continue being a shining beacon of hope for those around her.

Born Cassandra Krüger in Southern Missouri to a rich family who made their fortune breeding prized draft horses that were sold all throughout the Southern states for logging and coach companies. Cass was the third born after their older sister and a stillborn brother, leaving their father with no heir to the Krüger name. This caused their father to become a violent drunk, taking out his anger on Cass's mother and older sister, and used his belief that Cass was an apostle of Satan trying to destroy their family as a justification for his actions and the loss of his son.

It wasn't until Cass was 6 that their mother finally gave birth to a healthy baby boy and their father's abuse lessened, but the damage had been done. Cass's mother had grown to resent them, constantly reminding them none of the family's pain would exsist had they just been born a boy or not all. Cass would spend most of their free time with thr stable hands and horses on the property because of this, finding comfort in not be treated like a boy or girl, just simply a child who was willing to help and learn about horses.

The January before their 11th birthday, Cass was the only one around when one of the mares went into labour, noticing quickly something was wrong. They spent over an hour trying to yell out over the sound of the wind to get the attention of anyone on the property, all while using the experience they had gained to help maneuver the foals front legs into the proper position. Once someone had finally come running, Cass had already managed to pull the black and bay Breton colt for his mother, dried him off and gotten him standing and nursing on his mother. From that point on Cass had felt a bond with that foal like no other horse before.

By the time Cass had turned 13, the abuse they faced at the hands of their father became too much, they had grown resentful of their name, their biological sex, and the religious teaching their father used to justify his hatred. They felt they had no choice but to leave, taking the 2 year old colt they had grown to love over the years as one final "fuck you" to their father, knowing that horse was to be sold soon after training his was complete. They spent about 2 weeks heading South, stealing food from towns they passed by and foraging with the little knowledge they had of the land. After a desperate and failed attempt to steal a few cans of food, Cass was found by Nick while running from the shopkeeper.
