Something interesting to me is that even despite the fact that we've seen a mixed bag over the years of JP or Eng being the original for any given Sonic game, every time an English manual lists Sonic or Tails seeing each other as a brother, the JP manual either removes the mention when they localize it, or it was never in the original JP to begin with in case Eng is the localization
Even Sonic Frontiers, which is the only time a Sonic game has ever had Sonic call Tails "bro" in English, had said mentions removed for the JP localization by the director of the game himself (who did the jp localization of Frontiers)
It's almost as if Sega doesn't want the jp audience to see Sonic and Tails as "basically brothers" 🤔
And for that matter, it's clear not even English speaking people or Americans who work on the scripts for Sonic games, who worked on Sonic Prime, or even script writers/writers for the idw comics really want to broadcast that interpretation to the English speaking audience. Frontiers still remains the only time Sonic has called Tails "bro" in the games (which, even then, is a slang term not inherently indicative of people being basically nuclear family to each other), Sonic and Tails/Nine never called each other bro/brother during the entirety of Sonic Prime (but Sonic does use "bro" on Shadow), and the IDW comics has so few times Sonic says "bro" to Tails that I can count it on one hand. Ian Flynn worked on Dream Team and altered the script for Sonic Generations, and he didn't add either calling each other "bro" there.
Doesn't it read like a horribly half hearted attempt to fill some minimum quota of pandering to the U.S audience? I mean, if people working on the games and Sega wanted Sonic and Tails to be 100% unequivocally brothers, then this would be clear in the text itself. There would be no question, no localization differences, on the matter. And yet, the games as a whole (and even media canonical to them) depict their relationship as it always has been. Best friends, partners, with an unbreakable bond.
Just like that Shadow and Maria essay I did, the overwhelming evidence points to Sonic and Tails having a very strong bond that is not given a solid definition or label. Their relationship is ambiguous, and everyone is able to read them as they wish.
If you're dredging up crumbs, personal vibes you get, or old spin off media to make a point that characters like these are 100% unequivocally siblings, then you're grasping at straws just so you can bully people. Again, everyone has the right to read their relationship as they wish. Their relationship is canonically ambiguous. But one shouldn't be forcing their interpretations/preferred fanon on other people as canon and using it as an excuse to bully and harass people.
