For those who cannot/do not wish to click the link, here’s a summary for you. I’ve kept this post primarily to just some facts and numbers to keep in mind. If you want more of my in depth opinion, that’s in the article link.

What is the Companion App and What Does It Do?

The FFXIV Companion App will allow you to do the following from your phone for free:

Chat with other players on your friends list.

Use the calendar function to plan events and invite other players to said events.

Manage your character’s inventory and armory chest.

Check the in-game market board and purchase/put items up for sale.

Just downloading and linking the app to your character grants another favored teleport destination.

If you’re willing to pay the optional $5.00 USD mini-sub you also get the following:

The ability to also organize saddlebag inventory and retainer inventories.

The ability to hire an extra retainer (You don’t automatically get that retainer, you’re purchasing the ability to buy an 8th extra retainer).

Doubled saddlebag inventory space.

Kupo Nuts vs Moogle Coins: What are they?

Kupo Nuts:

A free currency introduced through the companion app.

The free version of the app grants you 1 Kupo nut per daily log in. Premium users get 2.

In order to purchase (and potentially list) something from the market board, you must use 1 kupo nut (to “send” a Moogle to do it for you).

It’s assumed you will still need the right amount of Gil on top of said Kupo Nut.

Premium users will be allowed to save a higher total of Kupo Nuts than free users. How many more we do not yet know.

Moogle Coins

A premium currency users may purchase with real money (think gacha mobile games).

For now the purpose of the Moogle Coin is to allow for more purchases (and potentially listings) from the market board. When you run out of kupo nuts, you can buy Moogle Coins and use those instead to surpass the limit.

This goes for both free and premium users.

No prices have been announced yet.

So far this only applies to the market board, however Yoshida-P has already confirmed that they intend to expand the use of Moogle coins in the future.

Some Numbers to Keep in Mind

All FFXIV players spend a minimum of $158.88 USD a year to access the game (the $12.99 per month entry sub or the full year-bulk purchase sub).

For every retainer you need to purchase, that’s $2.00 per month, which is another $24.00 USD a year.

This means that sub fees range anywhere from $158.88 USD to $323.88+ USD a year ($12.99 to $26.99+ per month).

To make full use of the companion app you need another $5.00 per month, which is $60.00 USD a year on top of the above.

Should you agree, your yearly sub is now a range from $215.88 USD to $383.88 USD.

If you want to purchase that final extra retainer the premium plan unlocks for you, that’s another $14 a year on top of all of the above.

This makes new sub totals range from $158.88 USD to a massive $407.88 USD a year

If you don’t purchase in bulk (say the typical $15 a month sub), all of the above rates will be higher.

And once again: Moogle Coins are an optional purchase on top of all of the above, that will be extended beyond market board use should they be profitable.

Big shout out to the FFXIV RP community! I made this blog only a few weeks ago but I’ve met some of the most wonderful people through this. Not to mention, I just love how active and supportive everyone is! Haname is my first MMO RP character (even though I’ve been playing FF14 since 2016…) and I’ve been so surprised and flattered that people have been reaching out to me to meet her and sending out questions to get to know her better, and to help me develop her.
